I love everything about this opera and just how it screams “Baroque” from the historically accurate theatre costumes, the baroque ballet, the stage, one of the best modern day opera performances of all time!
I am crazy about this work. The Lully spirit has a powerful grip on me. Love all those superb voices ensconced in the upper level. It is, in fact, my passion for ballet that brought me to this stroke of genius. Bravo !! Must be a thrill to experience this live
Great performance. Orchestra conducted by the man who almost single-handedly resurrected French baroque. Well done Mr. Christie. A long way from Buffalo, NY
As a huge dance aficionado, I happened upon this gem as I was studying from Jennifer Homans Apollos Angels. I have fallen in love with the glorious musica
A magnificent performance. So many "moving parts", it seems, to enable this production to cohere in the way that it does. Jennifer Homans' Apollo's Angels brought me here through her penetrating chapters on the origins of dance. I keep returning here to my "front row seat " ! Thank you for making it possible for me to feast on this perfection.
One of the best traditional Baroque productions outside of Drottningholm. Would be nice to have English translation but luckily I can read Italiano abbastanza bene 🤗
I believe that at in least one respect William Christie and Jordi Savall conduct in a similar manner. Both maestri have such a command of the score that they seem to be conducting with their entire bodies rather than simply with their arms and hands.
Can anyone make this available with English subtitles? The voices are amazing, and the costumes are so gorgeous I don't want to follow a translation of the libretto while watching.
Is this based on same later productions? Because the costumes look more like from 1700s rather than 1670s (edit: well except for the part he's lying on the floor, there it seems he travelled back in time... I don't understand italian nor french so have no idea what's going on...)
If the costumes have been similar to those used in the first setting of the opera towards 1673, they would have been fantasy costumes and not realistic costumes of the upper class of the time. In 17-18th operas, purely conventional costumes were used in a pseudo- roman style. Here William Christie makes the choice of realistic costumes of the time, probably to make a comparison between the story of Atys and the way of life of the court at Versailles, but using late 17th costumes and not 1670 ones; maybe he found the first ones more handsome and dignified.
Someil: the livret says « Deux songes joüants de la violle. Deux songes joüants du theorbe. Six songes joüants de la flutte. » Why is one flutte missing? Where are the violles? The traversières are anachronistic, by all accounts, if there was a traversière in the original at all, it would have looked more like the Haka flûte.

It gives you an idea what Louis XIV could have seen and heard, but it doesn't gives you an idea of the stench of the unwashed bodies (and clothes) and the urine in his beloved, icecold Versailles.
