Lumbar spine MRI scan, protocols, positioning and planning 

I’m about to get lumbar mri too and all I want to know is if I can go feet first and if my head will be out of the tube. I’m 5”4 (163cm).

How long it was ?

@@paulgavin2267 I had mri c and mri th done. One was 15 one 30 min. Yet the receptionist told me whole back is 1h. So it looks like it shouldn’t be another 30 min

How many hours does it take

I had one yesterday for my lumbar spine and I couldn't take it..the machine was to loud and the claustrophobia kicked my ass..

@@80sfreak42 I'm sorry you disliked the MRI . I had ear plugs and I'm not claustrophobic so maybe thats why I had no problems. I had L1 to L5-S1 ruptured disks.

I had a mri in August on my spine in an open mri machine. I couldnt listen to music in that one but i was ok . And the noise wasnt that bad it took about an hour.

Girl, it's the same for me..I am 15 years old and here having my first MRI..in 6 hours

same but for a reason other than scoliosis (but still back pain)

@@ovelesha you re most welcome. ..yes I went in feet...I've been diagnosed with postero lateral disc bulge and trust me MRI is not at all scary..it was my second time...the high pitched sound may bother u but I was okay with it...my pain was severe at that time that I felt good lying down for sometime there.😅😅for I couldn't sit or stand at that time..just don't move...close ur eyes and be still...if u move it will take longer...best of luck..

Oh my goodness I couldn't even do that. I'm terrified but need a scan done.

I barely made it through my scan in November. Today, I couldn’t make it at all & we had to cancel. I KNOW this thing won’t hurt me, and will assist in my treatment. But a phobia is precisely an *irrational* fear. We’ll see how my open MRI goes on Friday, I plan on doping up, just in case....

G Kotarski That’s for the demonstration purpose Most of the hospitals has radiology information System where u can access all patient details or else a Radiographer for positioning So it can be done easily 🙏👍

I didn't find it scary, either. But some people are very anxious about it.

We do, this video is just for demonstration purposes. In the hospital that I'm doing my placement in, one of the techs is entering the information into the computer and loading the protocols while another tech is arranging the patient's position and putting them in the machine, so that the scan can immediately start as soon as you're in. The video shows them filling in all the information manually because it's a test patient for the demonstration of the video. All patients that have appointments / are registered by the front desk already have a majority of the information filled in automatically (name, age, patient ID, physician). The only thing we have to add is what position the patient was arranged (supine/prone, head first/feet first), weight/height, and our initials. That takes at most an additional 10 seconds if a tech happens to be working by themselves (which should rarely happen). Not sure if you wanted a long-winded explanation, I just noticed quite a few comments of people being anxious and yours just happened to be the most recent. c:

So did you get an MRI of your entire spine? My doctor recommended getting an MRI of my spine in case I have nerve problems, and for my hip MRI the clinic did exactly as you described

@@ogDnice yeah it went well, and the reason why is because there are cyst found at my back, thank Lord it is not connected to the spine, and only in the surface, but its kinda sad cuz its really expensive :

I presume because lying on your back, your spine is in its natural position. Whereas lying on your stomach your spine is bent/out of shape etc. That's why it's not recommended to sleep on your stomach

Realmente! Fiz dia 18/01/23 da coluna . Me senti como se estivesse dentro de um caixão,pelo pouco espaço do rosto. Fechei os olhos e fiquei imóvel para ter um bom resultado. Meio assustador os barulhos.

@@kamalia4026 you can try to find an open mri depending on what it's for they have one you sit down for the mri. Ask around. If you're claustrophobic a regular. Mri can cause horrible after effects be very careful

I have refused an MRI of my back because of severe claustrophobia. Many techs do not understand that, those of us who suffer from it, feel like you re being suffocated and buried alive. It is no joke. I even had to walk away with mild sedation. Finally, my oncologist has ordered anesthesia. Still, I may be the first to ask for this ???? They are having troubles coordinating and scheduling . But when they do, I hope to be completely under… just the thought of entering the room is terrifying to me. Asking a claustrophobic to cover their eyes, put earphones on, etc, etc, defeats the purpose and makes it worse….

@@marianeill6234 I have the same problem, and I've had three MRI's in my lifetime. The technicians are not trained to be helpful or patient re: this at UCSF... they see it as a bother and added work to their job. They response is always just, "You can refuse the procedure if you'd like," and shrug their shoulders.

@@ratt57 That is inhuman…. I have received 9 calls in the past 2 months to schedule me for my MRI… immediately , if I want. They dont get it.. I am not walking in there until an anesthesiologist calls me… In the meantime, I wait, with a compressed fracture….
