Lumbini is a sacred site located in Nepal, known as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha. They are typically dome-shaped structures that house relics, scriptures, or objects of veneration. Stupas are considered to be symbols of enlightenment, peace, and the Buddha's teachings.
The design and symbolism of stupas vary across different Buddhist traditions and cultures. However, they generally consist of a square base, a hemispherical dome, a spire or pinnacle, and a crescent moon symbolizing the stages of enlightenment. Stupas are often adorned with intricate carvings, sculptures, and sacred symbols that represent different aspects of Buddhist cosmology and teachings.
Stupas are important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, who visit them to pay homage, make offerings, and engage in meditation and prayer. Circumambulating (walking around) a stupa in a clockwise direction is a common practice to accumulate merit and purify negative karma. Stupas are also believed to radiate positive energy and blessings to the surrounding area and all beings.
Some famous stupas include the Swayambhunath Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal, the Borobudur Stupa in Indonesia, and the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar. Stupas continue to be an integral part of Buddhist culture and architecture, serving as reminders of the Buddha's teachings and the path to enlightenment.
