extremely helpful and thorough breakdown w the info we really want to know. thanks for takin the time to do a good job. excited to try these lenses out!
These are great videos man! Thank you for the information about these lenses for the Panasonic Full Frame system. I am enjoying my S5 and needed some real talk about next lenses.
Great Lumix lenses reviews on this channel! Your intro on this one blew me away. Nice! I have the S1H and I am still undecided whether to buy the Lumix 24-70 or if I should go with the Irix Cine Lenses lineup. To be honest, I don't like the idea of having all these electronics in a lens. But maybe you convinced me ...
I don’t think you will regret the 24-70mm. It’s so good. Unless you have a tight budget or just aren’t interested in autofocus at all that’s the only way I’d stray.
@@fatherofbirds The lumix has so much to offer for videographers: great glass, sharpness, soft bokeh, color fidelity, not to much contrast (better for dynamic range), no focus breathing ... All that covering 24 to 70mm, saving me the trouble changing lenses all the time. I will get it! Your review helped alot. Cheers!
Thank you so much Devon, you have really helpped me to make the choice between these two lenses. And, no biggie, but you might want to take a closer look at the timestamp around 12.12 - l think you have a duplicate clip (in tandem). Smiles, Su :)
Great vid. Considering moving from a GH5 to a FF lumix. Question. I shoot in a small room and need to knock out the background for talking heads. I've got about 5 feet behind the me/subject and and not a ton of room to move the camera back. What would be a good lens to knock out the background reasonably well and get a 3/4 shot from head to mid chest?
Path Less Pedaled 5ft is pretty tough, I would probably go with the 16-35 F4. I know F4 doesn’t sound shallow but on full frame it’s like having a F2 on Micro 4/3. This would allow you to complained zooming in, moving your subject closer to you because you won’t have to back up as far. Check out my video with the 16-35mm F4. For my talking head part the camera is less then arms length from me. The closeness combined with the F4 and zooming in slightly makes a pretty nice blur of the background.
You could always look into primes. I've been picking up Voigtlander M mount glass for my S1 and I love it. You'd have to manual focus, but you can get a 21mm f 1.4, or the 35mm f 1.2 to really blur out those backgrounds. I got my Nokton 35mm f1.2 v II on ebay for $650. If you want autofocus, the new Lumix 85mm f 1.8 has been getting solid reviews, and there are more primes coming from Lumix in 2021.
@@nickharris5231 Sigma has all those contemporary lenses that just came out as well. I'm getting the 35mm F2 when it comes out for sure. Small Light and sharp and all about $600.
@@fatherofbirds yeah, they look cool but seem like they have a lot of distortion and not terribly great in manual focus. My understanding is they're better for photos where autofocus is more desired and distortion correction can be applied in camera. But it's an excitong time for the L mount, lots of new lenses and firmware upgrades for all :)
I'm happy that my choice seems endorsed: I've just ordered my S5 (sold all my Canon EOS R gear and moved over to Panasonic for the first time) and I chose the 24-105 f4 over the 20-60. Thank you for your video!
Good timing! They just announced a cashback offer on these, wasnt going to splash but when youre getting 700-850 off these lenses right now, absolute no-brainer with the new S5. Time to order, cheers bro and subbed.
@@fatherofbirds Im in UK theres a few doing it, its Panasonic doing the cashback though so im guessing it will be worldwide www.wexphotovideo.com/panasonic-lumix-s5-digital-camera-body-plus-shooting-grip-and-spare-battery-1750123/. £650 off the top tele and £550 off the sweet 24-70 which im going for. Great vids man, much appreciated, this is essential stuff for those of us who want unbiased reviews. You can go tell Panasonic that you sold me on the S5 and the 24-70 and you would like a big discount on the S5, am I right? ;)
Good video. I use the lock button on my 24-105mm when I carry my cam on my hip and have to walk. If its unlocked and you start walking as the cam hits your leg the zoom part of the lens starts to come out.
Robert John :0 That’s because I didn’t know. Sometimes I teach sometimes I learn... this is a learn. That’s a pretty sweet think to learn to thank you.
@@fatherofbirdsI don't own the 24-70mm. Can you do me a favor and test Par-focal of that lens. Just zoom all the way in on something, focus and zoom all the way out and see if it is still sharp. Thanks
Hey man, actually have both these lenses, and like you thought I wouldn’t end up using the 24-105 much after the 24-70 purchase but love the macro on the 24-105 and also that extra reach. The 2470 is a pure joy to use and shoot with but it’s pretty large aye haha takes up a lot in my bag, so since sigma released its 28-70 2.8 have been thinking about downgrading my 2470. Just wondering if you’ve had any chance to play around with the sigma 28-70 and whether you think the change could be a good one?
I have and while its a solid lens especially for the price, I do like the auto focus on the lumix lens more also focus breathing is pretty much non existence on the lumix 24-70 and much more visible on the sigma. But its not a bad lens I'm just not willing to step back. I feel you on the weight my girlfriend pretty much mains the 24-105 now on the S5 its a nice travel combo.
Hey there! super good explanation of the lenses and will definitely help with my decision later! by the way, any plans or videos in the pipeline to go over how to film at high frame rate and then convert it down to 24 frames in Resolve 16 or possible how you manage to white balance your shots both in camera and maybe in software ? thank you! :)
great video and insights. may I know why you decided to use two different cameras for testing each of the lenses instead of just using the same body. The pov then would be the same and it'd be easier to compare :)
I have the S5 and the 24-70 2.8. I find it heavy (getting old!) and I need a tripod. Just fallen in love with the Sigma 45mm. Love your videos, thanks!
Awesome stuff man! The image from these cams is great. Though I’m particular to Blackmagic, if I had to switch ecosystems, I’d likely switch to Panasonic. From a lens perspective, f2.8 is a maximum for me. f4 is not ideal for most filmmakers. Competition is fierce in most markets and the more blurry the trees are the more money clients pay you! 😂
Jakob Johnson Don’t forget we are on full frame so that F4 is actually less then F4 when compared to Super 35 or micro 4/3 F4 is a lot closer to F2.8 super 35.
😆 Thank you for sharing this. 24 105 is an affordable option for most beginners. I'm just impressed by its image sharpness. I bought the S1R camera set with this kit lense and that works well for indoor photographing for me.
Lumix s series are the most under rated cameras on the market. I was a diehard Nikon fan until I discovered Lumix and got an S1 for versatility with video and stills. Now that they updated the capabilities of the S1 recently with the new software updates, it’s a beast! Especially with anamorphic and 5.9k video with full vlog. I love these cameras and don’t think I’ll ever go back to Nikon.
It’s a stellar system truly. I’ve describe them as the perfect Cinema/photo cameras. If you just doing RU-vid and want AF maybe not but if you want raw power of composition, latitude in footage plus stills this is truly the best.
@@fatherofbirds honestly the auto focus feature is getting better and will probably get better than it is. Does Sony auto focus better? Sure, but the benefits that the S1 offers over the Sony are far superior and I do RU-vid videos.
I've bought the 24-70mm and I am really blown away by the quality! It became my main workhorse and it delivers great images. I have one annoying issue though: when I focus manually, I can see "stepping". The focus area jumps in little steps and that does not look too good. It's more noticeable whit close ups. When I use the area focusing by taping on the screen however, the focus transition is smooth. Do I miss a setting in the menu to get smooth manual focusing?
@@martagalanoficial Hi! Yes, it's on linear. Do you have the same lens? If you look at the focus peaking, it jumps when focusing, more noticeable with closeups or at 70mm. Later, when watching, it is quite annoying.
Thx for the valuable comparison. I'm curious how much dust has settled inside Your 24-105mm F4? I bought my 24-105mm F4 second hand, and just recently recognized that it has a pretty amount of dust inside (compared to all my other lenses). I know that in general the 24-105mm lens type is more prone to collect dust inside, since the barrel extends a lot more than the other lenses. But recently I was able to inspect another LUMIX 24-105mm F4, which was totally dust free. You got your 24-105mm pretty early, so I'm curious how much dust has settled in our lens after long term use, but without misuse (I hope ;-) )?
Just went check after reading this. Mine is pretty clean actually and we’ve shot in the rain and the dessert with it. I baby my things pretty heavily though so this may have helped.
I just ordered a s1. Being a m43 shooter a f4 for a lens that has a reach like that is not bad! It would be a f2 on a m43 and honestly a lens like that would be like 2k dollars ! And after using the olympus 12-40 having that extra reach is so fun i can't wait to get the s1 i am a bit more attracted to the 24-105 for all around use
I am debating on a Panasonic 24-70 or 24-105 with the S1H for video and sometimes photo usage. Is there a clear winner? Especially in terms of manual focus! For video I may use a gimbal (RSC2) - any thoughts on this?
Nice video. The question is whether the Sigma 24-70f2.8 which costs around the same as the 24-105f4 would be an alternative if you don't need the perfect edges of the Lumix. For portraits, it is every bit as good as the Lumix. And stopped down the edges are as sharp as the Lumix ones and it is optically always better than the 24-105f4 or any previous 24-70f2.8 from any DSLR.
Lumix is gonna win for video for sure. But the sigma is great to save money, for photos it is better but autofocus suffers abit for both, speed and accuracy. But I can’t deny the value.
Only one I've tried that is all manual is the 7Artisian 55mm F1.4 ... It's a $150 lens with a lot of character that isn't half bad in Super 35 mode. The build quality on that lens is crazy good for some reason but it's not anything close to great optics.
@@vincechook Personally, I want to try the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II that will probably be the next manual focus lens I go for. Just because I want Bubble Bokeh in my life. Lol
I’m in the market for a another one. I think I’m just gonna go for the 24-105 F4 as well however that sigma 28-70mm F2.8 is tempting, but I think not needing a macro lens if probably better
Yes, I had a friend who used them and got to touch on them briefly. If I could go back in time I'd probably just grab these primes and be done with all close range work. For video, the 24mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 that way you have more flexibility with the crop mode in 4k 60p. 36 and 75mm equivalent.
If I only need one lens for travel the 24-105 f4 will be my choice over 24-70 f2.8 . The 24-105 is very underrated lens , I owned both of them but my favourite still is the 24-105 . I use the Panasonic lumix S1R
I actually found the 24-105 pretty soft at 105, at anything wider than f/8. Is that your experience too?

What about focus motor in 24-70mm on AF mode with full-time manual (manual focus override)? Is it still linear (like on MF mode) or variable (non-linear) like in many other lenses?
As someone trying to move deeper into the video industry... Would you say it's worthwhile to pick up an S1 + 24-105 as an all rounder kit, and slowly buy more to add to my bag? Or should I get the GH5/G9? The price difference means I can almost buy a full lens kit if I go M43. However, my main gripe is dynamic range and low light. I don't get to use big lights as I do run&gun solo. I like to shoot landscapes/travel as a hobby, but for work I'm doing mostly interviews, events, behind-the-scenes, gym/workout shots.
Get a S1 or a S5 with a 24-105 F4. I used that for almost a whole year. The S5 will be better in lowlight and save you money. Then you can start picking up prime lenses for a good price . :)
@@fatherofbirds Thanks for the reply! Cool! Why is the S5 better in low light? Is it the Dual Native ISO? I heard they might be bringing the control for dual native to the S1 as well via firmware.
@@fatherofbirds Apparently it's build into all the S-line sensors. But not all of them got software control over it. Gerald Undone's video also talks about it compared to the S1H ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FHrPbDXXfiY.html&feature=emb_title&ab_channel=AndyTrace ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xDjLHiiatUA.html
Ciao bel video.. Attualmente ho panasonic S1 con 24-105 f4 Cosa mi consigli x la S1 x fare video e foto x il calcio tra:70-200 F4 .. 70-200f2.8 Oppure 70-300 f4.5-5.6 Grazie Romeo
hello :) you seem to be know a lot on lumix s series so here is my question... so i currently own a s1h (Acam) and s1 (Bcam) and gh5( B/Ccam) i record videos 3 times a week and also edit them in the same week so is a llitle bit to much to be recording in vlog or even raw and then color correctiong and blabla is just to much so i record in natural profile and just add some light color correction and done,, so my question is should i replace the gh5 for a S5 ?? or another s1h? does it make a difference?? since im only recording in natural profile ,, i tried comparing my s1h to my s1 but in my eyes the s1h just looks way better but i dont know if its justn me knowing that i paid way more for the s1h ,, so i just want another opinion... thanks in advance,,,, by the way because of your videos i ended up. buy almost all the s pro lenses and i love them!!
LUISA BAKES I have the same set up, personally I’m going with a S5 as a C cam... (if they ever ship it to me 😢) The footage coming out of the S1H looks more film like mostly because of that AA filter. The S1 and the S5 have the same sensor so they will basically be giving you the same look. For B and C cams I find this to be fine, I personally feel like the extra $2000 could be better spent if you already have a S1H. Personally one of the nicest things about that AA filter is the softness it gives peoples faces. Super sharp sensors are great for picture and video but most people don’t want to see al of there pours. I would get the S5 and perhaps looking into some black mist filters which add a softness to footage. It will save you a lot of money and give you a cool artistic edge in my opinion.
F4.0 isn’t a deal breaker for me as I’m more interested in the macro and further reach, but I’m just wondering as how it performs with ISO performance with lowlight. Currently considering switching from the Z6 to this system so I’m curious to know.
Please explain focus clutch. I’m getting an S5. Which lens would be more useful, the 24-70 or 24-105? I have a Canon 16-35, a Sigma 105 macro as that is my passion! Weight and quality are the main considerations. Please help!
The focus clutch is when the focus ring can pull down and you get measurements and stops on the lens when pulling focus. The 24-70mm is my favorite lens.
Hey, I’m actually working on a video on this now. But honestly just from testing the sigma contemporary 16-28mm F2.8 I’d say the auto focus is perfect on all these lenses now for the most part. Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 is now a contender for weight size and price, though I do like the macro feature on the F4
what is that pattern, looks like some fabric, of som kind, when you look at the bokhe, when blur in background. Is that the camera , or the lense?( in the window.shoot)
No but from what I here it’s pretty solid and potentially worth saving the $1000 dollars depending on the end game. I’m not sure after the update how much better the autofocus got between the 2.
I used the 24-105 for a bit (two events, some private use) on my new s5II and although i like the dual is, the autofocus and of course the range, i dont like the bokeh, its just a little too busy and rough. I think in when i get a second s5II (or the new high megapixel phase detect camera that should be coming out), i will switch to the 24-70 and also get 70-200. Right now im using the 70-300 a bunch, and for large events (just did a Marathon) its amazing, lovely images, the bokeh and falloff is perfect. I also dont like the way the 105 handels falloff, the focus just drops like an anvil, its not all that smooth. Overall im hoping for a new iteration of the 24-105 with better out of focus performance
Amazing if you don’t need autofocus. And I recommend doing it because EF is a strong mount if you ever wanted to switch bodies or go to other cameras you have a lot of options
@@joshualaird5303 Different tools for different jobs. I'm testing a R5 right now, record time limits suck but I see why one man bands who makes little commercial or clip style edits like it.
@@fatherofbirds I do mainly Real Estate but like having the options... I've seen the over heating issues too and I get the hesitation but for my needs it's perfect... the ef lenses are almost better with the new focus system... I just wish RF wasn't a small fortune :(
these are different systems. 15-35mm f4 is for full frame 8-18 is for micro 4 3rds. personally I like the 15-35mm on full frame is much more powerful imo
MegaMatojo I agree with that choice of video is your main focus. They only have a F4 right now but it’s super stellar. Check this video out it shows how flexible it is and the whole video is shot on it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-561R0CmiVqI.html
What focus clutch? Never thought 24-105mm has manual clutch..enticing..This is new to me.. i’m bought.. but my wallet is saying otherwise..😂 for the moment i stay with my GH5ii..
Let me help you with that feedback to a small creator: "Hey man great video, thanks for the review. I was sometimes distracted by the focus hunting on that back window at some shots. Keep up creating!" - Coming from someone with 186k subs this had the potential to motivate... Just food for thought.
Haha, it’s okay. The point of these isn’t to sell them but show off what I like about them and show you guys what it looks like. While pulsing in videos does bother us videographers who are geared at looking for imperfection the customer and majority of the public don’t notice this as much. Manual focus for serious work. (The auto focus does destroy my life and windows sometimes though 😆)
@@fatherofbirds but seriously. I shot a wholer movie with FX9, ,28-135 lense, and used lot of A.F in close-face situations. And, I coould not hvae done that without setting the speed of the A.F to quite slow. So , are your A.F setting set at a high speed here ? ( by the way, is it a s1h, U use in your face shots ? )
