This video compares two Micro Four Third lenses for the Panasonic GH5 and other micro four thirds cameras - the Lumix 25mm 1.7 and the Leica 25mm 1.4. With a significant price increase between these two 25mm lenses, which one is worth your time and money?
The Lumix 25mm f/1.7 lens costs around $150 while the Leica 25mm 1.4 runs closer to $700.

I'm really bothered that his GH5 is just setting there with the sensor exposed

You could buy two of the less expensive ones and still have >$300 to put towards a different lense. Good call there.

I got the Lumix 25mm 1.7 as my first lumix lens. 4 years later it still holds up as my 2nd favorite and best lens. If you are on a budget get the Lumix 1.7, although the 1.4 f stop and leica glass are really appealing. You will do phenomenal things with the lumix 1.7 just trust in your ability to get better and you will. the amazing potential of this lumix lens is there you just gotta unlock it by practicing.

Great video! Considering buying the g9 + 25mm 1.7, which other lens would you recommend me to compliment it for videos? As my budget is not that high I've been considering the 42.5mm, maybe you have other options to consider, thank you!

42.5mm f1.7 its way to go and if theres more budget, consider super wide laowa lens 7.5mm and thats all you need

Does the Leica mk2 version come with a linear manual focus as most other Leica branded lenses or does it have the jumpy one known from the lumix ones?
@Pmike404
@Pmike404 3 года назад
Not 100% sure on the 25mm mk2 but apparently it does have a slightly different motor in it for the focus by wire. The 15mm LUMIX G Leica does feel a lot smoother than the other LUMIX lenses though.
@orangejjay
@orangejjay Год назад
@@Pmike40425mm Lumix G is buttery smooth and it seems to adjust focus quickly if you're moving quickly and slowly if you're moving slowly. It's also consistent. Love this lens. I find it hard to believe the Leica could be 5x better given how decent the $150 Lumix is (AF blows me away, beats the snot out of other lenses I've used). If you don't need the weather sealing, the cheap one does fine. There's some words about the Lumix causing there to be crop on 4K video but I'm not seeing that and been using the Lumix 25mm for TONS of video.

Glad i stumbled upon your channel. Was wondering if i should upgrade to the Leica and I'm happy to learn the answer is no. Seems to be a common theme: Modern Lumix lenses seem to be quite incredible and it seems like once the Leica name is slapped on, it's mostly to milk more money out of pre-existing technology. The previous, Lumix versions of the lenses almost universally are just fine and not worth the upgrade or worth the 5x or so upgrade in cost. 🎉❤

I own the lumix 25 1.7 and want to change to Leica now. Two reasons: sharpness (see other comparisons) and manual LINEAR focus that Leica (only v. II) features, and not Lumix!

GREAT VIDEO! Right now I have the chance to exange mi 20mm (autofocus sucks for video, too noicy) for a 25mm 1.7 or buy a 25mm 1.4 for 400 usd... what you recomend in image quality and focus? is soooo much better 1.4? Thanks!!

The leica is better for video (better manual focus ring) and also has a wider field of view (less cropped) than the cheaper f1.7 thus makes all the difference in 4k if your sensor is cropped in 4K as your cheaper lens increases the crop - both the 25mm and 15mm Leica all take the same filter thread for an ND filter (46mm)
@rjkral

Could you explain a bit more? Both lenses reviewed are 25mm. Why is there more of a crop in what you are discussing?
@BarryMaskell
@BarryMaskell 2 года назад
@@rjkral in one of sultanoblogs videos he demonstrates that the leica lenses have slightly more glass area and hence capture a bit more field of view

@@rjkral leicas have a bit more glass - sultanblog demonstrates this in one of his videos which showed a slightly larger image than the cheaper lenses - hence on my g85 which has a crop in 4K the leica lenses help lessen the additional crop

Contemplating the two of these lenses, just wondering what your experience has been in low light. I'm assuming 1.4 does better, but is it really noticeable?

wondering the same thing, i want to do some timelapses / hyperlapses in my car in some low light situations
@elzafir
@elzafir День назад
@@anubiasaban f/1.4 has a half stop advantage over f/1.7, so instead of an ISO 3200, you can get away with an ISO 2200. If you get the Olympus 25mm f/1.2, then you get a full stop advantage over the f/1.7, so you can use ISO 1600 instead. For an even brighter option, a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM made for the Canon EF mount is $300 used, pair it with a $100 Viltrox EF-M2 II 0.71X speed booster will result in a 21.5mm f/1, which has a two stops advantage over f/1.7 and you can get away with ISO 800, albeit being a 43mm full frame FOv rather than 50mm, but with a cheap G85/G95 it will be perfect due to the 4K crop.

Get outta here. This is $150. How much is a Meike cine lens? Is it $150? And has their QC gotten better because they've got a history of inconsistent lens quality. For $150 you get silent AF, buttery MF, sharp video, sharp photo, and an overall excellent nifty fifty lens. Meike can't do half these things even at $150.

I heard from users that Lumix 1.7 is much more fragile (all plastic body). Indeed, image quality seems pretty close. Let see after 5 years how the 1.7 will age. ;)
@ReggieVdz
@ReggieVdz 4 года назад
To be fair, even if it's fragile, it costs 4 times less. So you can always just buy one again, I doubt that I'd break 3 in 5 years !

@@ReggieVdz i got the 1.4 on ebay mint condition for $250, got lucky! didn't go for the mk II though.. those are like $450 and not really worth an extra $200 for the weather seal. I have the 12mm 1.4 that's weather sealed so that'll be my go to for vlogging in any situation since it's wide angle too. low light situations is where u'll see a bigger difference.. definitely noticeable when i switch from 1.4 to 1.7 without moving the camera pointing in a dark area

Use a compressor. You sound timid then confident, then timid again. Hard to listen to on a cell phone. The audio is all over the place.

@@michalwalksA compressor is an audio effect that adds some "oomf" to audio. Typically whenever you hear narration audio that's gone through post, you're hearing it with a compressor effect added. ❤
