Lumix LX10 vs LX100 vs GX85 vs Olympus TG-5

In search of the "as good as it gets" everyday camera to take photos and video for under $600. I will be comparing the Lumix LX10 with tons of built in features. The LX100 a three year old camera with an oversized chip and undersized lens. GX85 a weather resistant camera with interchangeable lenses. And finally the oddball, a water proof Olympus TG-5 with 4k and slow motion.
Plus I also test a Zhongyi Lens Turbo II EF-M43 Booster Adapter. Although not thorough sample are provided.
Music props to Bensound // Little Idea

What a SUPERB review! Wow this is really awesome. I’ve watched a ton of reviews lately and narrowing down to a pocketable or GX Panny....this review is just stellar, well done!

Being a Lumix user for 5 years now, i find the GX85 the best bang for the money in all the interchangeable lens line-up!! Firstly, it is the cheapest 5-axis stabilization for video in the camera market in general.Secondly, I prefer the tilting screen instead of the full-articulated for photos. Its easy, quick and unnoticeable .Also i don't vlog so i don't need it to record myself. Third, no low-pass filter. Lastly, smaller than the g85/g7/gh4/gh5/gx8 so better for travel. The only problem is the mic port which is an easy fix with an external recorder like Zoom H1. You can find the body for 350$ brand new these days.

“Nothing on this camera impresses me” *A few years later the GX80/GX85 is endlessly praised by both photographers and filmmakers for its big list of features and capabilities even to this day* Don’t let this video refrain you from buying a GX80/GX85, there are countless videos showing off it’s capabilities and is the most capable of the bunch in this video. Man talks about pocketable and decides to stick an adapted full frame lens on it or the Lumix 12-60mm instead of using the Lumix 12-32mm pancake zoom that comes with the GX80/GX85 that’s sharper than the lens on the LX100. Then proceeds to test its low light performance with an f/2.8 lens when the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 II exist at an affordable price. I have no idea how he came to the conclusion that the GX80/GX85 was a let down when there are so many videos even new ones in 2022 endlessly praising the thing. Seems like you went into this video already biased towards one camera. This is by far the worst comparison video I’ve seen to date. But to each their own I guess.

Hard agree. I have a LX10, GX85 and many lenses, including Olympus f1.8 primes, and the GX85 is so versatile and unobtrusive. The only issues I have with this camera are the lack of decent grip, and low bitrate 1080 50p.

The LX100 is great for strobists. Hotshoe, 1/4000 shutter sync, 24-75mm fast lens, RAW. Nice when combined with the Nissin or Goddox off camera flash systems. For video, use the Shure VP83F mic. Love the LX100 for everyday and travel!

As a GX85 owner, you did it an injustice. I agree with a commenter, sticking a zoom lens on it and trying to fit into a jeans pocket was a bit silly. It comes with a 12-32 lens that compresses to the size of a pancake lens. But each to his own. I agree a camera needs to feel right for a potential owner to buy it.

This is a great video. I love the mix of practical information on size, weight and pocketablility mixed with low light stills and video tests. Great job. I love Lumix cameras. I have G85 and a Leica D-Lux 6 (Lumix LX7). I wish LX10 had an EVF option. I’m still stuck between the portability of LX10 verses larger sensor of LX100.

Nice review but what you didn't mention about the LX100 is that it has a leaf shutter and therefore it is the only camera in this group to have high speed flash sync and can realistically be used for off-camera flash in sunny conditions.

I think the low light high ISO test is funny. You choose a 2.8 lens for the GX85, say it's $1000 implying that should make up for its being a smaller aperture instead of using options like any of the sub $400 1.7 primes. A low light test with different apertures is a bit silly. Other comparisons were fine, but that one made me cringe.

I've been using LX10 since 2017, and after two years the touch capabilities went off along with the screen in all but the default position. Seems the connection cable inside the hinge gets wrecked by constant use. Overall, I love that camera though and I wish Panasonic came up with a successor - full sensor readout in video and a mic jack, preferably.

I think you are very harsh about the GX85. For a start it has both in-camera AND lens stabilisation (by far the best in class) which is why it is heavier. It also has an excellent pancake retractable kit lens which gives it good balance. If you put massive lenses on any small camera what do you expect? You can attach a cheap and good microphone to the GX85's hot shoe. Problem solved. The GX85 is Micro Four Thirds vs 1 inch on the LX10. Sounds like you want miracles. Both these cameras are way better image wise than the waterproof Olympus. You seem obsessed with extreme slow motion. In which case you can buy a dedicated video camera which has that function. The GX85 IS pocketable but if you insist on shoving a huge lens on it then of course it won't fit. You then complain that the LX100 is pocketable but then say its controls are too fiddly. Come on - be reasonable! The LX100 is a great camera, but the poor focussing ability you claim on the GX85 is partly because you probably have it set to constant preview which will make most cameras more sluggish to focus. You can assign a back focus button to almost any camera and the problem is solved. The GX85 does not cost $1000. I bought mine for under HALF that (street price) including the kit lens.

However, I also have an old 70D, 100D and a bunch of STM canon lenses and of course their bokeh beats the Zs220 all the time. Should have had the GX85 with the kit 11-32 compact zoom. Not sure why you compared it with the others with the massive lenses fitted. This camera is best fitted with compact lenses. I have both the LX100MkII and GX80. For me the GX80 is the better camera with flash, tilting screen and an EVF.
@bavideomaker29
@bavideomaker29 6 лет назад
I guess you don't use EVF much? That is my only grip with the LX10. No EVF and not even the option for an external one, like Panny had with the LX7. I have the Leica D-LUX 6 (same as LX7) and I'd love to have a 1" or 4/3" sensor, but I also want EVF and pocketable...so, nothing for me yet. I wonder if anyone will put a 1" sensor in one of the tough/waterproof cameras. That may be interesting.

Nice review. Too bad the Canon G7 X ii wasn't included. With a good hand grip its handling beats the LX10's; the Canon's LCD screen is more versatile and the zoom range is longer. The lens ring can be set for smooth or clickable use. It only suffers being f/1.8 vs. f/1.4 and lack of 4K (whatever that is :) ). I am biased toward Canon colors also.
@skyonic01
@skyonic01 7 лет назад
My first camera was a Canon AE1. I have had some kind of Canon product with me ever since. But 4k is delicious, the ability to zoom in and re-crop as if I were shooting on film too me is equal to power windows and door locks on a car. It just should be standard. I will be first inline to buy a Canon pocketable 4K image machine.
@robimage
@robimage 6 лет назад
I had a GX7 II and debated about throwing it into the ring. But I have to say Canon needs to get there video features sorted out. I also found the GX7 II needs some color editing in camera as the colors come out a bit too rich, especially the reds.

what flaw comparisons. GX80/85 is the best (with good f1.4to 2.8 lens) followed by LX100; because of sensory size m43 vs 1" lx10/15. Images are tact sharper compared to lx10/15 in low lights.
