I am 55 years old and I have worked in TV for 36 years. Part of that time was spent with an expensive broadcast TV camera on my shoulder. I purchased the S5M2 about a month ago. Anything that I do with the camera will be for my own personal projects. I have no desire to work with an external SSD or large files. The S5M2 shoots in 4K 10-bit video, which is more than enough for any short film, documentary, or music video that I want to work on.
Definitely it'll serve you well! for me the BRAW elevates the image quality even further than what you can achieve internally, but the internal image is still beautiful!
Let's give a big shout-out to the ladies in our lives who always oblige us and have to go through this drill: "Stand here, don't move for a few seconds. Ok, now start to walk slowly... that's it, now turn your head slowly... No, not this way, the other way please... OK, now look away into the distance... not too fast... good, good, good... Now I want you to walk fast in that direction and halfway through you'll spin around to look at me..."
I've been trying to choose between Sony, Fujifilm and Panasonic in the past couple of days and I think I'm going to go with the Panasonic. Thanks again for the review, it was all I needed.
@@mattiabricalli I haven't shot on the 6k pro so couldn't tell you exactly! I'm not a fan of the form factor of those cams, find the S5 easier to work with
As an Arts Educator guy who always wanted a REAL camera... This may be it. Anyways, after buying an r50 (doing about aRound50 minutes of research) back in November... I finally really sunk into it and used it...recognized it's limitations. Read people. Watch reviews. Watch "problems with" "how do you get" etc. I threw it on eBay, cut my losses, its already around 75% of the cost. So hey, whatever. But yeah, try to mitigate some pain in that wallet people. It adds up. Read more. Read more. Read more. I have been doing so all March and I think this is the right Camera for me. Photos + Cinematic abilities. A great tool to dive into and learn about video editing and all that. I have a pretty damn good 3080 system I built... so hopefully my i7 10700k and 64gb can do some* damage? R e a d M o r e But also, remember that sick cheesy quote: "A camera didn't make a great picture anymore than a typewriter wrote a great novel" - Peter Griffin. (Adams) lol
THIS is the review I’ve been waiting for. I always enjoy your review style and perspective. Instead of shots of flowers in the backyard and color charts, we get beautiful footage of how the tools would be used and their actual potential. Thank you, Ed!
Yeah I need to have fun doing these vids and I don't want to spend my "time off" shooting colour charts! Plus there are already many people who take the time to do that stuff!
Your footages is absolutely stunning. I'm trying to decide between an S5iix and the older S1H, and your channel is the first I've seen where the S5iix footage is comparable to the S1H - all the other channels (that I've seen) are so over sharpened looking. If you were choosing between a purchase of a S1H or the S5iix, which way would you lean? Both cameras can be purchased for approximately the same price (by getting a used S1H).
That's a really tough question, I'd say the S1H has the edge on image quality over the S5 iix, but you just gain a tonne of useful features in the iix that you don't get in the S1H... I also think shooting RAW on the S5 iix fixes a lot of issues with it. Josh Cameron just put out a vid today doing side by side comparisons between the two cams, if that helps at all. I think you can probably mitigate a lot of the sharpness in the S5 with lens choice, filters and grading...
@@EdProsserThank you for the reply! It’s starting to look like the videos I see from the S1H or BlackMagic cameras look so good (to me) is less about the camera, and more about the person behind it knowing what they are doing. Perhaps it’s just that the operators behind those cameras are just doing more to their footage to get that beautiful look? Like they know better how to expose the shot, get that perfect lighting, select the right filters, and color grade. And perhaps what I’m seeing from all these s5iix reviews is people just shooting in auto mode with stock lenses or something. I think I naively thought I would need to buy an S1H to get that look. Anyways… that’s a long winded way of saying thank you again. I’m going to buy the s5iix and try and work my way up to getting something similar to your look.
@@5656565564556564 90% of that look will be user experience, lighting / composition / lens choice. I think the S1H has a softer more organic image that can help, but the S5iix can still produce a beautiful image and I think if you put footage side by side most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference
Been waiting for this review. You have just enough technical analysis without going down the rabbit hole. But more importantly you highlight the creative potential of the camera with fantastic example footage that is properly graded. 👏👏
Thanks man! Yes that's what I attempt, to balance the technical whilst remembering that these are creative tools and showing what you can actually produce with it!
You are the only one I trust with camera reviews. You actually make good videos. Your footage looks awesome! A lot of creators make ass footage and call it a day. But you know what you are doing.
Thank you I appreciate it. Sadly LUMIX don't really seem interested in sending me their cameras to review so it's difficult to keep making these kinds of videos.
I'm only a few minutes in but you're talking about how you don't like the Lumix being so sharp I think this is because it has such a high megapixel sensor so it can be a hybrid. I'm curious if you've noticed moire? As far I haven't seen you shoot anything that would create that. It's my understanding like you mentioned a filter reducing sharpness, a filter may also reduce the moire but then it creates focusing issues. So I'm curious if you've noticed focusing issues as well. Two questions there
I've not noticed moire but I know many others have! In terms of filters and AF I shoot predominantly with MF lenses but I do have a couple of the LUMIX S native lenses and often add ND and diffusion - honestly not noticed any degradation in AF performance, but I imagine if you have lots of light sources that are blooming it might affect it.
Hey! I’m glad that I came across your channel through this video! I lined up a ton of your videos to watch and I hope it’s ok that i comment on each video i watch to do my part to let youtube know more people need to find your stuff! Love your grading too. I could watch people taking out trash if it’s colored like this haha jkjk Freals thanks for all the work you’ve put into this man!
The Great Joy are a more complete set, but they're quite big and bulky ... I think I prefer them at the moment. If SIRUI decides to launch a few more focal lengths we'll see. Love using the GJ on my Komodo in particular. I have a video on them coming soon! After them I'll probably look at the nanomorphs... Need a bit of a rest after getting this one out(!).
Haha! Sorry to make the decision harder, the price of this cam is super low at the mo though so you should be able to get a good deal with multiple lenses!
@@EdProsser yup saw the price here in Philippines thanks for your awesome content for this. I'm just curious if your luts will work on Adobe Premiere or should I switch to resolve too haha
@@jayguerrerolifestyle I've only made a powergrade which works in Resolve only. I will try push out some LUTs later this year but need the time to do them properly and test! I personally think powergrade are more useful though as it allows the user to really adjust and adapt settings to their choosing, rather than just slapping in a LUT which doesn't offer much control. If you get the Phantom LUTS (discount code in description) then they will work in any programme they're great.
OK, after a week of thinking it over, and watching more RU-vid videos on the subject to make anyone go bonkers, I found this video! It was exactly what I needed on the subject. Loved your down to earth review, with great footage comparisons (Kudos to the model) and not too much tech talk. I purchased a S5iix via the link and will be coming back for more info. Thanks!
Ah this is so nice to hear, thanks for letting me know! Hope it gives you a lot of pleasure and thank you so much for using the link. Do check back soon to let me know how you're getting on with the IIX!
Any of them will let you shoot beautiful work. Decide if your work is better suited to a bigger bulky camera or whether you want something with a smaller foot print. You can't really make a wrong decision...
There's something interesting with the S5 series (I have an S5, and am upgrading later this year to the IIx) is that it's so easy to mix footage with Blackmagic pocket cinema cameras! Yeah it may be a fringe case sure, but I primarily shoot video on my 4k, 6kg2 and even my OG, and will often mix footage with my S5, and the butter smooth roll off I see in the Blackmagic image just very compatible with Panasonic. I'm pretty pumped up for the IIx when I pull the trigger later on.
Nice I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! Yeah I was very surprised a few years back when I got my original S5 and saw the highlight roll off on it! Very pleasing.
Hi Ed after the annoncement of the Cinema Camera 6K full frame yesterday what do you think? Personally for most of us S5iiX is morr thsn enough specially if you havr the video assist like me. Great video I schoot multicam concerts with 3 S5 org BMPCC4K 6K and love braw...
The new BMD cam was a little disappointing, I really hate the form factor TBH and it shares the same sensor as the S1H so not the faster read out speed, some rolling shutter. Not an awful cam - good price, beautiful image, but with limitations. Shame they couldn't develop an ND system for it.
Would like to see Your comparison with new Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K in terms of image, they both has fullframe with BRAW. Both same price point. I think it would be cool. Thanks!
I'd love to try it out if they can loan me one or I can rent one! From what I gather it's the same sensor as the S1H but it'll have Black Magics own colour processing...
I’m considering the s5iix for hybrid shooting. Like you, I’m a huge fan of softer filmic looks vs the digital sharpness of many modern cams. I love the bmpcc4k image for example. I’ve been wanting for a long time to find a cam with the Blackmagic Hollywood film look, but with the conveniences of ibis and AF. Do you think any Canon cam such as the R5C could achieve the same softer Blackmagic film look, with proper filtration, film emulation and lens choice? Much of what I’ve seen from both canon and Sony on the video side looks so sharp and plasticky and not film like, so I hesitate to go that route. However I’m wondering if the s5iix could do the trick? What do you think?
I think honestly any modern cam with the right lenses, filtration, lighting and post production can achieve this now. I guess it might be worth waiting to see if / what gets announced at NAB because a) a new cam might tick that box or b) it might mean a price drop for older cams! Personally I love working with LUMIX cams - watch my latest lighting vid, you can see that the LUMIX S5iix holds up really well against the Komodo
I'm waiting to see if the rumoured Lumix S1H Mk ii launches soon before pulling the trigger on upgrading from Lumix MFT's GH5M2 and GH5S and going all in on Lumix full frame
I used to shoot on the GH series, the GH4 was the first camera I ever bought myself! I loved it. Only sold it a year or two ago. Yes I think that's wise but you can also be driven mad waiting for camera releases, no guarantees. If you can wait then there's obviously no harm

Maybe is because i am not a pro... but prores is not good for me. Is really hard in the pc, every one says the opposite... and the file size. wooow the file size is hell.
Probably will be, if they didn't forcefully put contrast detect on 1080 50p. Totally forces you to buy into L lenses if you need full frame 50p, disappointed at this business choice of theirs.
I really like these longer reviews, I've owned the s1 s1h s5 but jumped over to fuji gfx with 100 ii and Im considering moving back to this camera and this review was very helpful
Thanks I like the longer reviews but they sure take a lot of time! If you're interested I just posted an absolutely mammoth long term review of my Komodo.
Hello Ed, Could you consider this camera as a B camera to side with your komodo for some doco ? For autofocus / Gimbal & B Cam for interview ? Or it's just silly ?
Just for standard fictional filming in 24p V-log and one slowmo setting. Did you touch sharpening, contrast, saturation? Any recommendation for ND? Do you stack ND and mist filter? Settings for follow focus? Looking forward for answering and merry Xmas.@@EdProsser
@@aybee5908 I guess only thing to say is keep shutter angle to 180. Sometimes use diffusion and ND yes and stack. Grading depends on the project - I talk through it a bit in here - but I think I also link to a few of my tutorials in the description. Follow focus I don't use!
I will never understand why everyone grades the skin tones yellow. It just looks sooo unnatural. Caucasian people are pinkish magenta not yellow! Calling the phantom lut look neutral is a big joke to me. It makes the skin yellow and the overall look is yellow greenish.
Everyone's skin tone is different... My partner's skintone doesn't have much magenta in it... especially when shot at golden hour which obviously adds a warm colour cast to the skin tone. A lot of people push too much pink into skin tones making them appear salmony / over red / over digital. People forget there are also some green / blue tones present. It's also graded, stylistically so most of these shots are graded warmer to match the time of day and colour cast produced by warmer temperature light.
Yep, but how does that change my statement? As I said, there is a lack of third party lens support...so if you look at e-mount, you have much greater choice - Tamron, Samyang, Sigma, Tokina, Viltrox...
Vlog internal is great and convenient but for ultimate image quality BRAW is better as it skips a lot of the internal processing (which suffers from some of the issues with oversharpening and noise). External BRAW can be a bit of a faff to shoot though with the external monitor etc. Making a video on it at the mo.
It's a very competent stills camera! I don't take much stills these days nor do I take them professionally, so can't give you too much advice on that front
This review is a masterpiece, thanks for putting so much detail into that. I own a RED Komodo and wanted a smaller / faster tool for our production house, have you been able to match them with decent results on a same project? Thanks!
Yes they can fit together not too bad! The Komodo footage always feels "thicker", can't think of a better word for it, takes a bit of tweaking but can definitely get them to play along side each other.
I decided to get a second body to my s5, so I got a s5iix, but I gotta say image quality is much better in s5, s5iix is too sharp that looks pretty bad, especially fhd 50 is worse. Did you find any solution for it in lumix s5iix? maybe take increase NR in camera picture profile or any options change in menu? of coure there's any option to recude in post, works to 4k, but fhd is really digitally broken compare to original s5.
The S5 iix is a lot sharper yes! I've generally countered it through lenses, diffusion and post (as mentioned in the vid). There's not a huge deal we can do beyond that unless they add some software to reduce that sharpness in camera. Its been on my to-do list to see what it's like if you crank up the NR, but generall in my experience that will just give you mushy negative results
Which shots in particular? The ones of me outside with blue sky in the city - that's shot on some expensive Sigma cine lenses. The S5 mark 1 would look just as good!
Hi, Ed. Superb video, really in love with it; so much so in fact, that I want to replicate the image quality to the best of my ability. However, I am very much a newbie, and I am not planning to shoot anything professional or anything like that. I just want to create stunning youtube videos like this. So my question is, is it enough to get an S5 II, a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 contemporary, a black pro mist filter, a good microphone, and I will achieve basically the same filmatic feel to what you've managed to create here? Ooor do I need to also buy a camera rig, add a blackmagic video assist screen, and attach an external SSD so that I can record in Prores or BRAW..? I suppose setting the exposure is a lot easier with an external screen, so there's that, and there's also the fact that you can apply a LUT to your VLOG footage with a screen like that, but forgive me if I'm wrong, can't I also apply LUT's in-camera while recording in VLOG..? Thank you so much in advance for helping me out.
The gear you mention should be more than enough to create beautiful images - the rest will be down to lighting, composition... User skill(!) You can import LUTs onto the camera and either use them just to monitor or to burn them into your footage. Or of cause shoot in v-log and apply them in your editing software.
@@EdProsser Ah yes, user skill, let's not forget! Do you have any good resources that have been helpful for you in learning your craft that perhaps I could also make use of? I've been shooting photography for 4 years now but videography is entirely new terrain, a bit scary, but someone once said you need to lean into what scares you.. Okay, great to have your confirmation, I will look into that. I want to minimize the amount of post production so this seems like a good idea. Thank you for the quick response!
@@glennaremoy I would just say RU-vid + shooting and editing your own stuff - as much as possible will help you. The more you go through the motions... Shooting stuff, trying to emulate stuff you've seen - the better and more confident you'll get. I never had any formal training, so learnt everything as I went along. But generally - lighting will be the most important factor in getting good images. If you're into photography - you probably already know that!
@@EdProsser I see. You are surely one of the people I will try emulating. Learn by doing is my philosophy as well. Yes, light and shadow is always the first thing I look for when I'm out. One last thing though, I hope you don't mind; is every footage in this video captured with the Tiffen Pro Black Mist filter in 1/4 strength? And also, do you use a polarizer for any of these shots? Do you deem it necessary? I hardly need to ask if you're using a ND filter, I assume you do. I am looking to buy the Nisi TrueColor Variable ND 2-5 stops. Is this enough to start shooting, or do you recommend pairing it with a Circular Polarizer as well for that extra control, or is this too much fiddling with 3 filters mounted and I'm just overcomplicating it at this point? :)) Thanks for all your help!
@@glennaremoy a lot of these images aren't shot with a pro mist! There are different diffusion filters used throughout this video. Some with and some without. I own a 1/4 black pro most, but don't use it much these days. I tend to prefer black satin as it's less intense on the highlights blooming. Most shots here will involve a VND - the NiSi one looks good.
Hey mate, any issues with MDT files? My original S5 has been plagued with them but only in certain shooting modes & that’s with the recommended ProGrade V90’s!
I really want an S5ii or an S5iix. Hoped to see a video from you about it after I watched the S5 and S5ii many many times just for the vibe. It is very important for me to see a camera in action with the visuals that I desire and you do that. Hat's off to you my friend!
My pleasure - I wanted to use this camera in the wild for a bit - to really put it through its paces and test stuff like anamorphic shooting and BRAW (which is a dream to shoot with!). Hope this is useful in making your decision - any questions let me know!
Hmm which codec and what kind of SD card were you using? Certain formatting can mean maximum files sizes, so if a clip exceeds that, it gets split across multiple files
If you Google "hsl-hsv resolve technique" you should find it, easier than explaining in comments - if you can't find it drop me another comment and I'll try help!
Hi Ed - your videos are masterpieces. Have you reviewed the G9II? Looks packed with features and with good lenses and software the one or two stop disadvantage of MFT can be mitigated. Thoughts?
Thank you! I haven't tried it, was meant to get one on loan a while back but never chased it up. Personally I'm a fan of the S5's as prefer the larger format sensor. If you don't need that then the G9ii looks like a great cam.
@@EdProsser many thanks for your reply i have a G9. I was convinced my next camera would be an S5 II / X. I have even bought a 50mm f1.8… but then o went on a holiday. Took the G9 and 5 lenses: total weight under 2kg. Focal length cover 20-600mm FF equivalent. The. I started looking at G9 II reviews and the image quality is much better than the OG G9 and with the right lenses and software can get very close to FF, most of the time. So I’m thinking the G9II might be the better option for me. It even has RAW video options too now which is amazing for a supposedly photography-first camera!
@@EdProsser was thinking of buying this camera today but I’ve seen a few videos saying the S5IIX shows moire very easily due to not having the optical low pass filter. Apparently it’s very visible with clothing and architecture. Any thoughts on this?
@@CaptainShorif it'll depend on your use case, and what lenses / if you use diffusion filters. Generally I've never seen it - I don't shoot weddings with people in suits tho...
Cheers for this. It’s interesting you point out the differences with the original S5. I currently have an S1 and I had an S5 (until it was stolen!) and somehow there is something going on where the mojo from the S5ii cameras has been reduced by 5%. Ha. That is of course, a stupid comment, but somehow it doesn’t feel the same. That said the S5ii or X are clearly brilliant cameras and brilliant value for money.
@@EdProsser Would be great if they released an S1H mkii, that could be something. We seem to have reached something of a peak with what is possible in a small camera body though so I’m not banking on it. The S5iiX is already a very capable camera. Feels like for about 4 or 5 years now a lot of cameras are spec bumps and re-jigs rather than re-inventing the wheel. I use a Canon C70 for most of my work and it’s been very good to me, if manufacturers started fitting internal ND’s into mirrorless bodies that would really feel like a leap.
Thank you so much for such an in-depth, real world review. I think the long-form format really gives you time to explore what these cameras have to offer (which is a lot!). And with so much footage to show, with different lens combinations, I really got a sense of the cameras potential. I've been a Lumix user for a while (currently using the GH5 mk2), and I agree with you about Panasonic colours - they are highly underrated by so many reviewers. Panasonic are on a bit of a roll at the moment, and as well as this camera, the G9II is calling out to me... I need to get my GAS under control, and be thankful for what I've got! Thank you again for taking the time to make this - well worth the effort.
Honestly comments like this make it worth it - it's a huge amount of work to fit in between my professional client work but I feel like the only real way to test kit is out in the field and capturing proper material to showcase what you can do with kit. I absolutely understand why some people shoot in their backyard or do colour charts - as they might not have the time to do more! Really excited to see what Panasonic does next - will probably test out the G9ii at some point and share my thoughts.
@@EdProsser I'd really be interested in your thoughts on this camera. I truly believe that there is life in the old micro four-thirds dog yet - and heartening to see that Panasonic agree. My only question is, what on earth will they have to put in the GH7 now to make that an attractive proposition..?
Great review and equally beautiful footage to illustrate your points! I don’t mind the length at all :) And I think it’s not only the scope/depth of this review that’s so appealing, but also how it’s crafted: nice typography, great pacing, superb selection of music. I’ve truly enjoyed watching it (from a filmmaking perspective that is)! It’s kinda funny because with this 30 minutes review much valuable stuff is said about the camera’s video capabilities, but those make up just 1/2 the camera: It’s also a great stills camera. I’ve been using the original S5 for the last 3 years or so, both for my freelance work and at my day job in a museum. There I regularly put it through its paces both as video (gimbal, interviews, hand-held, studio) and photo camera (real estate, exhibits, events). I found you really need to push it very hard to reach its limits. Don’t know about you, but when I first decided to buy a camera, I so totally obsessed about the whole decision-making process and probably watched hundreds of camera reviews. Now that I’ve invested quite some money into this system (and the L-mount), things have just gotten substantially better with the release of the mark ii and iiX. I’ve been playing around with the iiX for a couple weeks now and it’s such an awesome addition to my kit as a solo filmmaker. Autofocus alone is changing completely the way I shoot.
Yes for sure! I mention stills a little in my original S5 and S5 ii reviews - but honestly (regrettably) I just don't take many stills these days - as RU-vid is always pushing me to shoot more and more video(!) - so I don't feel particularly qualified to comment on it's stills ability - although from my limited use it's very nice, as you say! Thanks for checking it out and the lovely feedback, appreciate it!
I have a few questions, please help clear things up for me. Is it true S5IIX support SSD drives up to 2TB? Can you use USB-C thumb drive as emergency solution on S5IIX? What is the highest bite-depth in video recording? 14-bit?
Yes it supports certain SSDs check online for the supported models as they need to be fast enough for the larger bit rates. Internally via compressed media it's 10-bit and I believe the external RAW is 12 bit.
@@EdProsser I'm actually on the fence of either getting a S5IIX or a Fujifilm XH2S/XH2 but I have a hard time fingering out which to get. I'm gravitating towards the S5IIX but there are still things I need to figure out to make decision. I saw the Dockcase Pocket M2 Enclosure for 2230 MVME drives and wonder if that would work. It is much smaller than Samsung T5/T7.
@@kmwong1786 best option is to try rent / borrow and shoot with both and see which you prefer! Stats and tech specs are one thing, working with the camera in your hands can really help make that decision.

Hmm well I think they will both suffer from the same rolling shutter issues, the new BMD cam will have convenience of recording internal BRAW with an optical low pass filter, but the S5iix will have the anamorphic IBIS which may improve handheld shooting... The image will probably be a bit more organic / nicer on the Black magic but sensor readout on open gate in the blackagic is somewhere around 28ms which is not gonna render very nice motion
something else to consider is the new Z Cam E2-M5G..they're claiming it's the most dynamic range out of any of their cams AND global shutter..plus interchangeable mounts, speedbooster compatibility etc@@EdProsser
This is the Formatt Hitech Soft Golf diffusion filter, I know they've just released the PB filter, but I assume they're different, rather than just renaming it... Anyway, this one is nice, warm-golden hazy vibes...
Have you tested the ibis with a 28mm lens? I just ordered the S5ii to pair with my Atlas Mercury 42mm 1.5x - and one of the big reasons is for the anamorphic Ibis … to just have a compact Anamorphic travel camera that I can shoot handheld. So the 42mm Mercury is essentially the width of a 28mm lens … you mentioned 35mm and up having good ibis performance, Idk if you’ve tried a 28mm but I hope this isn’t too wide for the ibis to be useable .. anywho, cheers, best S5 ii X review I’ve seen
It should be okay, but just be careful, I'd say the wider you are the more prone to IBIS wobble it is. So it's great for smoothing small movements but if you're walking around with it you'll see warping etc.
Enjoyed the material you included in this long form review, subscribed after watching. I'm looking at the S5iix with the current deal that includes the 85mm lens for free; body with kit 20-60mm+ 85mm for $1,840 total is very tempting!
