Luna the Orca (killer whale) and dog interact! Rare interspecies footage captured back in 2003 in Nootka Sound. #orcas #killerwhales #dogs #viralvideos #interspecies
Luna the killer whale socializes with dog in 2003 near Gold River, BC. Luna/L98 was a male southern resident (fish eating) orca who died march 10 2006 when he was hit by a large tug boat in Nookta Sound. Luna lived a solitary life when he found himself alone hundreds of miles away from his feeding grounds. He made friends with people but more concerning with boats. Unfortunately this relationship ended his short life. But his story left behind a legacy about his species and why they are important. The southern resident killer whales are an endangered species living in the pacific northwest who rely on salmon as their food source. Salmon is at also at risk on the west coast due to pollution, over fishing and fish farms. We must do all we can to protect both salmon and endangered southern resident killer whales and Luna highlights this plight. If you care about killer whales and want to see them survive, then educate yourself more about their struggle and how you can make a difference.

Luna was an exceptionally friendly orca, and often in desperate need of social contact; sadly, so much so that it eventually cost him his life by getting too close to a boat’s propeller. The dog was never in any danger.

I can't stop blaming the Native Americans. When the DFO finally got around to trying to save Luna, they ruined everything. They were going to use a boat (Luna was well known to chase boats) to lure him into a pen where he could be cared for. Then, when they could reach them, they would transfer him to were his pod was and reunite him with his family. The plan went smoothly until the Native Americans paddled out in two canoes and lured him away from the DFO boat with their splashing. It wasn't an accident, either! They deliberately lured him away from his would-be rescuers because they believed he was the reincarnation of their dead chief and they didn't want to see him leave. They ruined everything!

Megalodon I don't know all the facts, but I had thought the Gov was going to try and put him in a Sea World type location, instead of "reuniting" him with his family? I'm wrong about this?

@lightsrallon907
@lightsrallon907 8 лет назад
+Chris Kavanagh Yes, you're right. The Native Americans were the ones with guts and love who saved him from a miserable life in an aquarium prison all set up to transport him. Some of us believe that he was shot, not hit by a boat, as it was warned someone was going to kill him that year. Its all in the documentary The Whale on Netflix. If you're angry and sad about him, just think how others who came to love him would have felt if they knew how he really died... although I believe they suspect it but can't prove it. When his friend had to go away for 3 days that's when it happened.
@megalodon7916
@megalodon7916 8 лет назад
+Chris Kavanaugh Yes, you are. The original plan was to lure the whale out of the sound just as his pod was passing by, thereby reuniting him with his family, but the pod didn't take its usual route past the sound that year, so that proved impossible. So, Plan B was to transfer the Orca to the waters near where the pod WAS traveling that year. Since there was no way to lead the whale to the Pod's current location, they would temporarily catch him and then move him to a location where it would be possible to reunite them. Unfortunately, the local tribe's dead cheif had claimed he would be reincarnated as an Orca, and when a lone Orca sam into the waters near their land, the superstitious natives were convinced he had come back to watch over him. Thus, they refused to see the whale moved. I spent time studying this case. It's all documented based on eyewitness accounts and the testimony of those who knew the tribesmen.

True fact: all Orca attacks are in marine parks by a solitary animal. There had never been on record an attack on humans by orcas in the wild. They are genuinely friendly and sociable, but when put through the trauma and isolation of being in a pen.
@vidjdwhite
@vidjdwhite 10 лет назад
TrackMaster844 Your true fact is based on unfair numbers. I'm assuming you got it from black-fish. The death ratio has nothing to do with "trauma." Lets consider this, people die in airplanes, theme parks, even driving to work. When swimming with predatory animals attacks can happen. Therefor I think the number of deaths at parks are very low! Oh, for every one person that swims with an orca in the wild, a thousand or more interactions take place at sea-world alone. I bet if those numbers were reversed or even close to being equal the number of deaths would be far greater in the wild. In reality the numbers are nowhere near close so your point it totally irrelevant. You could say for the 500 or so people who swam with orcas in the wild (if that) there were 20 times as many incidents at sea-world that turned out fine. It's all how you want to manipulate the numbers! But I guess being an ignorant whale advocate is cool these days.

John Davis Then lock yourself up in a small cage for your whole life in some zoo, do stupid tricks for food and we'll see how happy you gonna be. These park are created just for the sake of human entertainment, animals didn't wish to go there. Wanna see some bears? Then go into the wild and enjoy. If we kidnap and capture humans, it's illegal. If we do the same to animals, it's just fine.

I just watched Blackfish...I was very surprised to find out that some of the "Trainers" were not educated Marine biologists. Why on earth would Seaworld put lay person's in a pool with one of the worlds smartest carnivores???
@LadyAryun
@LadyAryun 10 лет назад
There was only one incident involving a human. An orca latched onto a surfer's leg. The orca, they think, believed the surfer was a seal and when he realized that he wasn't (the man turned around to face him), the orca let go of his leg. They say with the identification the man made plus the surgical precision of the teeth, it was an orca. But yes, I whole heartedly agree with you. The breaking of the blood bonds between family members is a huge issue. Not to mention being cooped into a tiny little bathtub for a creature that swims over 100 miles a day. For example Tilikum is languishing with no interaction - something orcas live for. It's sad that when I was a little girl and got to see "Baby Shamu" (Kalina) I asked 'aren't they sad?' The trainer said 'it's all she knows. Her mother was taken from the sea, but she seems fine.' That broke my heart so badly and I've never given a single dime to them. 'Blackfish' and the current footage of Tilikum depressed and ignored was just the final nail for me. I can't, in good conscious, give money to an organization that is so woefully ignorant. I can't. If no one believes me, look up Seaworld's Beluga Whale death rate (not to mention the baby orca death rate). It's horrifically disgusting.

It wasn't the accumulation that prevented his rescue in the end. It was the interference of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people who preventing his capture. Back in June 2004 they tried to move him into a pin by using boats to lure him in. Because he was attracted to boats and had been trained to follow the DFO boat, the plan had a possibility of success. Once he was in the pin, he would be transferred to a location where he could be reunited with his family. But the stubborn natives refused to let that happen. As he was following the boat towards the pin, they came out in two canoes and distracted him. They managed to successfully lead him away! Those idiots thought he was the reincarnation of their late chief, and refused to have him moved. Some of the more sensible natives had agreed to have the animal moved for it's own protection, but most of them wouldn't listen. Thanks to their meddling, DFO eventually had to stand down and abandon the attempt. Thanks to their incompetance, their "reincarnated chief" ended up being brutally killed after he got sUcked into the propeller blades of a tugboat. That poor six year old whale had grown so accustomed to playing with boats that it didn't see any danger in playing around a tugboat. The bloods on their hands. The attempt with the pen was the best opportunity for a rescue attempt, and they ruined it. Ugh! Usually I'm all for indigenous rights, but they had no right to interfere with DFO's plan to save that whale. I don't care what they thought that whale was, its rights came first! This was a Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans affair! Spinger, the other orphaned whale, was successfully reintegrated with her own pod and is alive to this day! Thanks in part to that meddlesome tribe, DFO never got the chance to try and save Luna! I know DFO has gotten a lot of criticism from the way they handled this situation, and yes they could have done more, but those stupid natives in their fucking canoes didn't help matters! So thanks a lot, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations! There is just as much blood on your hands as ther is on the DFO's. I hope it was worth it to see your precious "reincarnated chief" torn to shreds by the propeller of a boat! Thanks a lot, assholes!

I never knew that how selfish of them I'm usually on the side of the natives bc they get some raw deals. That situation however was just unnecessary. The animal's rights are more important than some stupid superstition.

Seems like the whale may have been attracted to what he THOUGHT was a sea lion, goes to check it out, sees an unknown hairy loud creature....... keeps getting a closer and closer look to try and figure out what it is, dog doesn't stand down, possible friendship taking place. They are magnificent creatures
@MinewsAJ
@MinewsAJ 7 лет назад
No, actually Luna has a story behind him which explains why he was trying to interact with the dog. He was separated from his pod when he was very young and he was just looking for a family, a friend, or anything he could play with. Luna wouldn't eat the dog. Infact Luna was a southern resident killer whale meaning he only ate fish so even if he was hungry he wouldn't go looking for a sea lion he would e trying to find a chinook salmon.

OMG! The orca is named Luna. He is a Southern Resident who is from the Seattle/San Juan de Fuca Islands, WA. USA He knew the dog was a dog and they were friends. Luna would never eat dogs or seals, because the Southern Residents are fish eaters. (Salmon) Some Killer Whales do eat seals, but not the Southern Residents.

Yeah.. Have you EVER seen another 'whale' with a prominent DORSAL FIN!?? They are CETACEANS, yes.. but that accounts for ALL WHALES- 'toothed' or Baline (filter feeders), as well as *DOLPHINS & PORPOISES. *ORCA are not whales! They are the LARGEST MEMBER OF THE Dolphin Family (Delphinidae). The translation of 'Whale KILLER' (because *Grey Whales Calves.. Southern Right & even baby humpbacks, and smaller whales are part of *SOME, NOT ALL!! of different Orca Pods diet. Sad, yes..but the need to eat too. So... Whale Killer ended up being MISTAKENLY translated to *Killer Whale, DESPITE their specie's name being Orcinus Orca, of the Delphinidae-'family'. Not whales. 😊 ✌, 💖 &... 💡, From Down Under 🐨💫

I read that whales and dolphins share a common ancestor to wolves and all canines in general. This ancestor made its living between the ocean and land. It branched to those making a living in open oceans and to ones staying on dry land. After all this time, they still share some characteristics and affinity to humans and to each other.

I realize that orcas don’t attack outside of marine parks. I realize that that orca was probably just friendly and curious. I realize that if that dog had fallen into the water, the orca probably would’ve rescued it and put it back on the boat. Having said that, I’d still be terrified. lol. In my defense, I’m afraid of EVERYTHING.
