Head to head comparison of these two spectacular carbon enduro bikes done by Matt Richards. You can find the X-1 Enduro here: lunacycle.com/x1-enduro-ebike/
Have always appreciated Matt's reviews. It helped me by a surron x a year ago. This review is great, too. But, he used an incorrect pricepoint for the X1. The $3,490 is for the base x1. Matt rode the bike with m600 silent upgrade ($200) and 2000watt ludicrous upgrade ($300) so an accurate price for the bike is $3,990 (not $3,490 as reported). He mentions the upgrade cost of the levo display but did not mention the x1 2000watt upgrade cost or silent upgrade cost. Otherwise, great vid. Thanks.
@@malanalan1 Not sure if you are trolling or misunderstanding common diction, but I'll reply like the latter... vid is informal for video, which should be obvious from the context. It is not capitalized, so obviously is not an acronym.
@@ahighervibe4086 why?....just get a USWE camel back, geeezuss if you're worried about a bottle mount this is probably not the right bike for you. LOL, people will be bitching next cuz they want a front basket on the bars for their cat.
I spent the entire quarantine watching Luna Cycle videos.... I have saved my extra milk money to purchase the Fat Babe... unfortunately with 3 months of no work, I now have to wait another 5-6 months to save up again..... someday, I too, will own a Luna! Welcome back everyone!
@@kartikeyarajderkar8614 make 7 grand a month?... I don't live in California, I live on a Reservation. I am lucky if I clear ten grand a year... i am getting a bike so i can ride out of town and get a job that pays more than minimum wage!... the Doctor down the road doesn't make 7 grand a month... besides, I will have enough by March to get the Galaxy Paint... now that's an e-bike!
Really like my X1. At first I had some reservations. I was used to riding a 750w Banfang hub motor bike. It had lots of power but was heavy with no rear suspension. This made for a very bumpy ride and it couldn't tackle some of the steeper hills I wanted to ride. The thing I had to get use to was the frequent shifting to make sure I didn't overtask the chain and snap it by being in too low of gear. But I found it to be an excellent climber. Although you have to be constantly thinking about the terrain you are riding on. I like the throttle but using it alot really hurts your range. The power delivery is much different as you have to peddle harder to increase your speed and torque, but your efforts will be rewarded as the bike is smooth and powerful. The motor is a little loud, but I'd rather get over that steep hill than worry about that. The trimmings on the bike are largely first class. No Fox but the Rockshox do really good job. Only One major complaint: when you have about 20 percent left on the battery, it rapidly looses power to around one half. Kind of a pain if you encounter some hills towards the end of a long ride. I give the bike a 4/5.
I upgraded my X1 with coil rear shock, carbon wheels, carbon handle bar, rev grips, WTB Silverado saddle and raceface Chester pedals and boy oh boy this beast runs and feels great. I would not trade this with any other ebike for that price range plus it has plenty of power and torque. With 2.8 tires it can climb any roots and rocks. And the addition of the throttle this ebike rocks.
This was the review I have been waiting for. Thank you! In addition, I really appreciated the update at the end, which seems to be comparing apples to apples a little closer.
Enjoyed the review. It just fueled my desire to build another bike, (I build my own frames) but an ebike with the bafang 610 drive and the silent gear.
Great review and comparison, Matt. I've been loving my X-1 for sure. Thinking that I may upgrade to the silent gear, since that came out after I ordered mine last November. I've already got one buddy eyeing the X-1 for purchase based on my experience. I'm sure there will be more when I get out riding a bit more.
this is easily one of the most concise and informative reviews for laymen out there . With SO many ppl home needing to productively get outside It would be Great to see more owners /testers doing long form reviews of the different aspects of the LUNA line and even more comparisons . ⚡
This is the best review of the X1 that I have been able to find. The argument for the Levo is a solid one, and is certainly a good one for someone with deep pockets. The point of the X1 (in my opinion) is to show the consumer who saves their pennies that they can have a solid MTB that will not fail on the trail in a few weeks. As $3700 (or whatever it is at this time) is still a lot of money for some people. Typically, anyone with the resources to by a $10k e-MTB won't even know what Luna is...but those looking at the X1 most certainly know what the Levo is. What the Kenovo is, what the Heckler is, and on down the line. While it sounds like feel that this guy's a Luna fanboy, the fact that he actually has the Levo, and still favorably rates the X1 is huge in my book. The X1 not being as playful as the Levo could be weight, but it could also be components...Change the stem, compare HT angles for possible fork changes, change rims for something lighter and the bike feel can change dramatically. It should be obvious that I am seriously looking at e-Bikes, but even a used bike at $5k is only going to have a 500wH battery, with questionable life left...Try justifying a $5k used bike with my wife, and while I get it, she won't. (anyway WAF aside, just gotta scrape up a few more pennies...)
@@scottjameseaton5503 Well, I will soon see. Just plunked down my hard earned on the X1, size M, with silent gear and upgraded display. I REALLY wanted the Commencal ebike, as I have recently purchased 2 commencal mtbs for my kids, the Meta 24 and the Ramones 24+. The quality is so good, even though they are just kids bikes, that I figured that was the bike that I wanted for myself. But then the economics steps in, and my "dream bike" will have to wait. That is, provided my kids take to it, as it looks like they are. (I am a motorcycle guy who no longer rides because the kids are not drawn to motorcycles like their dad, so this is hopefully that gateway drug)
@@richarde1355 No, still waiting. It was said to be early August delivery...which I am not sure if that meant delivery to Luna or my house. I must now assume to Luna. As it stands, I have no idea when it will ship to me (I am 6 hours away). I do know that I have the silent gear upgrade along with the 860 display upgrade. I assume that the silent gear upgrade must be performed at Luna...meaning that the bike must be uncrated to be modified to silent gear. The 860 display probably just gets dropped in the box. I did try to contact their chat support to get some sort of update, and I have visited their FB page, but so far, no updates.
I ride Specialized and thats all I own. All around bike. Especially the iconic stump jumper, can't go wrong. My all time favorite bike. Shes an old gal, 2010 StumpJumper FSR but shes never in last place! I also own a 2008 Specialized Big Hit and it's still a ton of fun for a tank lol. But Today I am stepping out of my comfort zone after seeingt his review. X1 adding to CART! At the end of the day and in our current situation with all the crap going on it's all about the money anyway. less than 4k upgraded X1 or a 9k stock Specialized. Sorry gals, X1 has entered the dance floor! Mic Drop!
I'd like to see the X1 with a rohloff hub , belt drive and a bigger front sprocket. It seems like a bike more suited to more of a cross country mountain bike than an enduro.
To be fair the X-1 "as tested" would cost you 3990 with the $300 wattage upgrade and another $200 for the silent gear upgrade, but it still comes in $1000 less than the base Levo.
I've built myself an e-mtb using a Bafang BBSHD and now I'm looking at something like the X1 with an enduro setup rather than trail. The BBSHD on 21S is really too powerful for off road stuff and I would like a torque sensor for better control during climbs at low speed.
Quick question... on the X-1 if you pedal without any assist is there drag from the motor? I know some ebikes have that issue... just wondering on these.
Matt, Thank you for an excellent review and comparison of the Luna X1 Enduro Vs Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon Ebikes. I was ready to order the Specialized Turbo Levo Comp when I came across this comparison review. I like to do a good amount of research and have changed my focus to the Luna X1 after seeing your review. Also, while looking at the Luna site I found the new Apollo. When will you have an in-depth video review of the Apollo? How can I contact you direct? I would like to discuss the differences between the X1 and the Apollo. Thanks!
@@jerrycrunch My hybrid was heavy to me at 34lbs. My carbon roadie seems pretty light at 18 lbs. but this Luna, which a hardcore mtb guy I know swears by, seems pretty damn heavy at 60 lbs.
I had this idea in my head for a while I would like to share . I was thinking of a fly wheel to generate power back to the battery and for regenerative braking. Maybe it's not a new idea but I never seen that. I have seen just a fly wheel for regenerative braking. But that's all it was used for. Hope this might help someone out there.
Got an X1 with ludicrous snd silent gear. My issue is no matter the gear or whether Im coasting, paddling or throttle the gears make a constant clanking noise. Cant find any info on this put a support ticket but what Im seeing Luna support is lacking. Any help would be appreciated!
Try rolling the bike backwards there are some 3 pins on a clutch or engagement gear that occasionally get stuck in the standing position do to grease. The noise should go away if not do it again.
I know this is a 3 year old video, but it’s a great comparison video. Any update to compare the X1 to the X2? And do you know about the Canyon Spectral:ON CF 7? Can you compare to that e-bike?
Id have the x1 if there was after sales support here in Australia, if I have an issue with the levo I just take it to my local bike shop for warranty repairs, what options are there for x1 owners?
For bike components, you can have your local bike shop do the work without any issues, I would guess. For issues with the motor or display, Luna support via phone or internet is pretty solid. Of course, any parts shipping, etc would potentially be an issue.
I'm ready for my third ebike. I'm 64 and just getting into biking. Im used to running but running is getting a lot more challenging. I love that this has trottle like my Radrover did. I like the dual shocks and not so fat tires like my MateX and Radrover, cause I like pedaling, but love the trottle when I get tired. I ride mostly easy trails. How is the Luna to ride with power assist off? Does it ride like a normal bike? Would you recommend this bike for me if I was going to change to a comfort seat?
Also nice to tap the throttle when u can't peddle. Can't peddle with lean angle but you can throttle. It's great. I'm ex pro motorcycle road racer :) my ebike is insane and people must trip out seeing me tear the town up on me ebike. I have the most insane ebike on the planet and nobody's seen it. Yet. Long long story but it will be told. Thanks god i hid it all away for so long. Decades. And it dominates. I'm back and excited. Full blown downhill bike beyond. 11x,8.
They don't make a class 1 because Luna is a class well below Specialized. They don't understand how the MTB industry or culture works. There are plenty of MTB trails and parks that still don't even allow class ones. So adding the throttle and more speed to the X1 makes it a very undesirable eMTB. The X1 is a dirt bike, not a eMTB. Buy a class 1 if you want to ride MTB trails. Buy a X1 if you want to ride with dirt bikes.
@@ChristianJohnsons Class ones are the best and love mine. Class one up to 20 mph only having pedal assist. Class two having pedal assist and throttle up to 20 mph only. Class three can have pedal assist and throttle but only the pedal assist can go beyond 20 mph up to 28. I don't believe the X1 fits in any of those categorizes. I'm down here in Florida and if you want to ride MTB trails on a eMTB. Its has to be a class one.
So if you're out on a fire road and hitting the throttle only on flat ground how fast can you go? That is with no pedaling, it wasn't clear in the video if that 28mph was with throttle only or with pedaling. Thanks
Great video! How is the range on the X1 compared to the Levo if you are not using the throttle just pedal assist? I believe you can change the power assist level from 1-5 to 1-9 to make it smoother and to find that sweet spot.
Depends on your level assist. I can tell you if you are on assist 2 and continual throttle you can expect around 20 mi. I'm 200 lbs and change, so it could be better. If you are not using the throttle at 2 then you can probably expect 40 mi.
I think it depends what you want if you want a crazy powerful bike by all means get the X1, but if you want a mountain bike to ride like a mountain bike with assist that complements the bike not changes it then get the Levo. More power is not always what we want on a mountain bike. Sure it is fun but if you really trail ride then you might be like me and want a more natural feeling mtb. I currently own a couple of E-bikes and one of them is a Kona full sus. with a BBSHD with Ludi controller. Like everyone else I thought I had to have the Ludi. I was wrong, I honestly never use the power of it, and it made the throttle uncontrollable. I ended up programming it back so it puts out the equivalent of the stock controller, and now it feels better on the trails. There are situations one might want a powerful bike, just not for my riding. The Levo just feels fluid and composed, dare I say natural.... But I would buy the base model.... Also just to be clear, I do like the X1 and I love my Kona with the BBSHD
Yep, you're exactly right. That's why I pretty much came to the conclusion that it's a toss up ENTIRELY dependent on what your preference is. The funny thing is, most people "think" they need the extra power... but they really don't. Hell, I rarely actually ever use Turbo mode on my Levo even.
@@bluesti3 yeah if you trail ride alot then a little bit of power goes a long way. For example twords the beginning of the video he climbed the concrete hill on the X1 with only throttle. I would never do that the throttle for me is emergency only if I am almost to the top of a hill and I need just a little extra. i also rented a levo and I found that I really did not need the turbo mode unless I was on a very steep hill, and I am a big guy at almost 270 lbs. on my kona with the BBSHD i rarely go over the 250watt mark. On paper the big power sound aluring and great, and when you get the bike sure you pull a couple of wheelies and fast runs then reality sets in.........
I went with the standard configuration as I like riding bikes. It should arrive in a month. I can see the appeal of Ludi, but after reading everything that I could on the X1, the consensus was that Ludi was a nice to have, but certainly not a "must have" considering that the standard bike is still more powerful than your mainstream ebike. I hope that I am not wrong, but all I really care about is getting to the top and having the energy to explore and then ride back down. My first ride in a long time (just the other day) on my analog bike (without the kids) and I about killed myself trying to get to the top without stopping and walking...needless to say -I had to stop and walk. So, I will make that climb, on that bike...as I have set a goal, but when riding with my buddies who have been climbing said hill for years, they will not have to wait up for me once the X1 arrives.
Got my X1 today. Only took a week to get it delivered to TX. Took it for a 18ish mile ride on roads, greenways, singletrack, and some small dirt jumps. It's an awesome bike, and I love it. I almost wish I'd gotten the silent option, but meh. It's not that loud.
I would like to know how does it handle decent sized jumps like you would see at park. How does it take a very hard landing? Can it be hucked to flat? I know the levo can take it, but can the luna x1? My main hold back buying this bike are these questions? A good bike should be able to handle hard landings. A reply could lead to a bike sale. I am in the market to finally make that e bike plunge.
@@gerrywong295 2 years later I am back in the market for an ebike Answer from these guys stillnot solved. FYI Niner WFOE9 lasted exactly 2 years before catastrophic motor failure at 951 miles. It may get warranted but I buying a new bike regardless.
i want to see an updated comparison with the X2 and the Levo now that its 2024! and the X2 with upgraded ludi controller and 60v is still cheaper than the base carbon levo which also took a price cut the X2 is $4370 820 watt and the turbo is $4999 with a 500 watt battery
I ordered the X1 today in XL. Accidentally selected gloss black. Sent email asking to change to matte black. Hoping that finish is available but it did allow that option so I guess it is. I did see August for delivery but hoping that was not for the XL.
Hello, I am 6'0" with a 32" inseam, looking at your X1 sizing options. I only see 2 options, Medium 17" and XL 21", which would you suggest, given that pedal distance isn't as important on the assist bikes. Also, I don't care to be excessively hunched over when standing.. Thanks.
@@proto12qs Yes, I have heard this too. Their products look awesome, however, I consistently hear the customer service can be somewhat rough around the edges.
I think communication may be a little slow at times if they're swamped... but they ALWAYS stand by their products and do the right thing, often times even if stuff is WELL past the warranty period!
The M600 used in Europe and Australia is de-tuned for legal use. It's a much more user friendly motor. I love power but 2000 watts on a 54 pound bike! Wow.
Luna Cycle Ebikes im looking to buy the x1 enduro today in large but all i see is a small option only . When are you planning to have large avail for taller riders ?
How having more power can be a bad thing when you can tune down and use the power you need or want but still have the power when you need? In my opinion, if you allow me to say, is that, if one want a electric bike to feel like a regular bike, they should buy the regular one
Riding up the cement incline - thats not 2000W of power (2.6 horsepower). If it actually had that much power it would have accelerated and not just held ˜4-6 mph climb speed it showed. I think they are overrating the power, I wonder if its more like the 750W that Bafang middrive is designed to deliver
It depends on which gear he is using. I have the 2000w on my x1 and the 750 on a home build. The 750 is much smoother and silent but the 600 2000w will dig very deep I have not run out power yet using the throttle and or peddles on a steep technical uphill.
I like this presenter....he articulates very well and seems to be provide an honest review/comparison. However..............a VERY IMPORTANT item: With Specialized you have a brick and mortar store to shop along with a full service dept and outstanding warranty support of their products. I had experience with Luna a few years ago and it was shall we say in a “nice” way.....horrible horrible horrible ! So bad that I have not done business with them ever. You’re welcome :)
So concluding this video. Luna is way more powerfull but since EU doesnt allow anything near that power. The choice would be to go specialized. Luna is like 5kg heavier (thats 25% of the specializeds weight extra!) so thats also a really big thing. If you are off roading with 250-750w every kg saved makes a big diffirence.
@@epjo122 I just put Carbon Wheels on the X1 and it shaved 6lbs so same weight and it was a $500.00 upgrade. Bike is now 50lbs in Large size. More powerful, cheaper, same weight.
Darius Barazandeh, You Wealth Revolution Network I’m 5’ 11’ and I did this review... the large is comfortable for me. They run a tad on the large side, for the record.
For me there is no comparison. Price and performance. The Luna smashed the over priced levo. Always found specialised bikes over priced and frankly they don't warrant it. Another great bike to look at is a Frey. Same motor decent spec and even less than the luna
X-1 vs Levo 10 out 10 times I will buy the X-1. Even at resale value X-1 a no brainer. Fun factor X-1, Kickass X-1. Thanks Luna for exposing these snobby over priced bikes.
This video is comparing a class -4 electric bike to a class -1 electric bike. The X1 is in the same class as electric dirt bikes except it has pedals. I think the x1 is a cool rig but its kind of ridiculous to compare it to something that its not. This luna x1 is fine if ridden on private land or places where one can legally ride an electric dirt bike. You cant LEGALLY ride a class 4 ebike on any dedicated mtb trails in the states that I know of. I think Luna should design and produce a class 1 ebike so they can really stir things up in the emtb world. If they can sell a class 4 ebike for 4500, they should be able to sell a decent class 1 ebike for the same or cheaper. I put some serious thought into buying an x1 until I found out I basically had nowhere to really ride it….at least not on any singletrack
current x1 is programable and mot of the disadvantages you mentioned could be solved buy turning the x1 down so the bikes were competing at simaler power levels i don't think having the option to use more power can be counted as a disadvantage and i don't think its fair to compare the handling and feal of both bikes at max power when you can turn the x1 down but you cant torn the levo up. "It also has the advantage of not having the crappy Bafang CANBus firmware which requires special box and special permission to program."
I'm not sure how saying an electric bike is most like a regular bike is considered a compliment. If I wanted a regular bike I wouldn't spend $8k on an electric bike. The Luna realistically crushed the Levo but somehow having less power became a positive as the review went along.
