oh it absolutely is! they have elevator priority systems at furcons, fursuiters & disabled people always get first priority before everyone that can safely use stairs
@PeeperSnail
@PeeperSnail 11 месяцев назад
It is in most furcons! This is due mostly due to the fact that people in fursuits tend to have very big, bulky costumes and limited visibility, so to avoid accidents conventions are spacious and have priority systems like Seiche mentioned. The furry community is also very welcoming to disabled people (pretty much any marginalized group), so the measures to keep fursuiters safe got easily adapted to encourage disabled folk to go to furcons and have a good time.

Furry and a wheelchair user here, I experienced a lot more accessibility at the furcon I went to last weekend than I have anywhere else. The only issues I experienced were due to how the hotel itself was but otherwise, none at all, and they would hold the elevator door for me which I appreciated so much.

@@mxpants4884 I don't really know, last year there were people (who I don't think were furcon goers) who let the elevator doors just shut before my friend and I could get to them. I had my walker and my friend had a cane as we are both disabled, we had a hard time getting an elevator ride due to various reasons, and we eventually had to take the stairs at one point. Three to four flights of stairs, it messed my walker up pretty bad, and it caused my friend and I a lot of pain.

A friend of mine financed half her uni degree by furry commissions and she absolutely loved them as her clients. Uni is mostly free here in Germany but of course there are still a lot of other expenses and furries tend to happily pay what art is actually worth. My friend also did some NSFW art eventually for some repeat clients. Nothing but my utmost respect to anyone who participates in that community in some way. Its quite hard to say the furry fandom is a good fandom. They have the biggest percent of drama over the horrible things like rl animal stuff and kiddie stuff. I dont hate the furry community (altough i find them very very strange) but we do see the most horrible people coming from this fandom and other human like animal fandoms. Its not hard to hate this community, not saying its justified just saying its very easy.
@usernameisallfull
@usernameisallfull 11 месяцев назад
@@maxnum1sgameclub263 I'd say it's just because of the sheer size of the fandom. It's unavoidable that stupid drama happens within the community (literally anyone can join, it's a very simple and off limit concept), it's just that the stupid drama gets way more attention than the actual cool stuff most of the fandom does, so people think that's all the fandom is. It's depressing, really. The whole fandom is literally chill people who like the idea of cartoon animals.

@@maxnum1sgameclub263 it's very easy because the people in the community tend to be autistic, gay, and/or trans. The people doing terrible things exist in every community in the same numbers, people just don't *care* that they're fans of "normal" things. Someone does a horrible thing and you don't go "yeah they were a resident evil fan" you go "oh they were a furry". It's entirely based in confirmation bias. People hate furries because they're social outliers, so they get extra scrutiny, bad things happen, the bias is confirmed, people feel justified in their hatred, and it continues. You're saying you aren't justifying it, but you're also continuing this prejudice just because of your anecdotal evidence based on your own biased outside perspective.

The furry community is pretty notorious for compensating artists well (they generally respect artist rates), tipping well on top of that, and just generally being great clients. As someone who has done it at Anthrocon and trying to "keep the magic," it's tough. You need to plan your routes, and have a handler (a person who is your second set of eyes because doing ANYTHING in them is a challenge--especially from preventing mishaps of people looking for a hug from outside your field of vision). There are cooling rooms where people can put their suit heads into cooling/drying machines, and tons of water to rehydrate. It's a process, and luckily most of it is done inside a cooled convention space. While large, it doesn't hit numbers like Anime conventions; you can still walk around, and experience the air conditioner, lol.

I remember watching a Kurtis Conner video covering the topic of Furries. From what I remember, the furry community includes a significant number of people who fall under the umbrella of neurodivergency (including those with autism, ADHD, ADD, and similar neurodevelopmental conditions). So the normal community is very chill and accepting of others with similar conditions and allows people to step outside their identity of “just this one condition” and into something they choose to be, which is very cool tbh. It’s nice to see a community that comes together and is accepting of people with these conditions. Plus the fact that furries tend to do big fundraisers for charities and hospitals, which is always a plus. The weird part of the furry fandom tho, they’re just the loudest and most obnoxious, so most people see them and use them as a blanket statement for the entire community, from what I know, even the Furry community tends to disavow those types of people.

The staff was so kind, the attendees so generous, and the creativity I got to see was incredible. I have performed at all major ATL cons and multiple out of state ones, but FWA was my favorite!

Dinomasks are definitely a trend fandom-wide! they honestly are a really great way for kids & teens in the fandom to be able to make and wear a character, most people advise against youth going for a fursuit because they're either expensive or a ton of effort on your own, and making one that you'll grow out of at some point would be a frustrating experience.

@@KingOfGaymes it's very exhausting, I make sure to take lots of breaks during practice and during the actual comp they have water backstage for us. I've also been doing it for a decade now and I know my personal limits in suit ( which can change depending on which suit I'm dancing in.) On average a high energy routine is fine so long as I don't go past two minutes. My second place finish at FE 2023 was a choreo I made with plenty of pauses and slower moments to let myself breathe. I love doing big moments and acrobatic things but remembering to recognize your body's limits is key.

I was going to suggest Anthrocon also! Also first time I've seen this channel! Denfur looks a lot like Anthrocon when it was in Philadelphia. It's now held in Pittsburgh. I'm not a furry, a couple of my friends are and they needed help paying for a room, and I was curious. Of course one of the first questions were "....is this like a sex thing??" Ask all the questions, everyone is there to have a great time and I think it's impossible to offend a furry (unless you're a "not c" looking to stir up trouble). My experience: it was always a good time, lots of fun, and incredible creativity! I think it was 2015 last time I went, but everything was great and kept going back until life caught up with me. So many interesting panels, from comedy shows, dance competitions, creative writing, Q&A panels (I think they had the author from The Last Unicorn there), various arts and craft panels, and even it's location has lots of places within walking distance. Only complaint was housekeeping kicking us out so they could clean (late evenings and getting booted out early with no caffeine readily available and convention not open yet kinda forces you to go out for breakfast, and being in The Westin we'd get stuff at the Penn City Grill and try to wake tf up). But even then always a fantastic time!!!

A little bit of info: There's always problems with the hotels at these cons. Rooms sell out almost immediately as soon as they are available. Often times, we need to reach out to others and even room with people we may have never met. There was also some kind of issue with the hotel staff this year according to a few people who went. DenFur also has a pretty weird reputation in the fandom, and while it's pretty big, it's had problems for a few years. I would suggest if you were to do this again, possibly Midwest FurFest. The moms are amazing folks BTW, many furries being queer, they often are abandoned by families, so these moms took it on themselves to be the moms of people who need it, even if it's just for a day.
@Croz89
@Croz89 8 месяцев назад
I think one of the big differences between furry cons and many other cons is the ratio between 1-2 day tickets and full convention tickets. Furries are far more likely to attend for the entire convention and therefore need a hotel room for several days, many even arrive a day early and leave a day late. That's the reason the hotels fill up so quickly.

14:31 things like this furries call “breaking the magic”! This also applies a bit to people showing skin in general (aka Poodling). It used to be a thing quite frowned upon to do but furries have gotten more relaxed about it, mainly because the limited vision, ventilation and the constant heat of basically being covered in a colorful carpet can be dangerous. Sometimes you just have to take it off, if not to save yourself, to save your suit from having to be literally cut off of you by paramedics.

Honest question. The constant thing I hear from furries is that the just dress up because they like to and there isn't any kind of weird species confusion involved. If that's the case, why would there be some kind of immersion breaking taboo about taking off headpieces? This does seem to indicate there is a certain level of desire to believe members are actually anthropomorphic animals. No hate, furries rub me the wrong way (no pun intended), but I have no legitimate arguments against it. Just trying to understand better.

Technically every person I've ever dated has "accidentally dated a furry" 😏 Just told my mom about the free hug charity- had never heard of this group- she's pumped to join so thanks for featuring them! There is already a con in Las Vegas (Las Vegas Furcon) and one in Reno called Biggest Little Furcon. Cons tend to stay local to specific states and cities so ppl can travel around and see their friends that live in these locations. It's less about if its a party town or not. If you'd like to go to another I'd say the most famous are Anthrocon in Pittsburgh, MidWest Furfest in Chicago, and Furry Weekend Atlanta. Ive mostly been to Florida cons. Those tourists love approaching furries if they're at the same hotel as a con, prob due to the more family based tourism there. Plus they're already primed to meet mascots at the theme parks. I wonder if the Denfur normies were mostly there for business? The description of them refusing to acknowledge the giant animal people as if they were hallucinating is too funny. Never experienced that.

Every artist friend I have who has done anything with the community feels the same. No community is perfect, but they have since sucked me in to explore the fandom more myself and I plan to go to my first furry con next year!

same, I honestly wish I was better at drawing furries rather than specializing in anime girls, because furries are usually the most supportive and respectful people to make art for. Also really understanding about mental health issues and disability, which back when I took commissions more often was a big problem for me; even though I clearly stated my expected turn around and why it was so long, some people got really rude and entitled about it.
@MissShembre
@MissShembre 11 месяцев назад
@@hel117 You should totally keep practicing your furry drawing skills, though! And agreed. MOST commissioners are cool. The rare one will ask for updates weekly or stalk your progress update site-- and then ask for a tweak to the art at every single step of the process.

I can see that. Just visited the biggest con in germany and the new location was happy about many things with us furries. They openly siad its great we have our own security, medics, helping desks and more. They where also surprised how simpel lines for events formed by themselfs and how we left space for people with handicaps.

I'm not a active member of the furry community but my ex was, I used to help her make fur suits and accompany her to cons. Just like any Fandom there's bad apples and weirdos but generally it's a really wholesome and loving community .and those suits have so so so much condensed foam. Like couch foam. It's heavy and hot for sure

Furry conventions have to be very high quality and security. If they’re not, it’s too easy for people to come off the streets and start harassing and/or attacking us (as has happened before). This also means that cons that don’t have high security, quality, etc. get noticed very quickly and avoided, as it’s a safety hazard. And yes, raptor masks are mostly used and worn by minors/kids and new furs because it’s way cheaper than buying or making an actual suit :) Also omg yes, one of my favorite parts of going to furry conventions is seeing the people who are just at the hotel, not the con. Just people trying to get to the pool or something like that 😂

14:40 of oh thats an actual thing! so, in the community it's referred to as "Breaking The Magic" like. exactly like when mickey and co's heads get knocked off. in an attempt to help suiters who care for that, there are rooms with large fans they can go into to cool down and dehead. called the headless lounge. theres usually signs around the con pointing to the closest one though usually theres only 1 or 2? also uh. puphoods are at best furry adjacent its a whole different thing. like a decent number of Pups are furries but its akin to how fat hairy gay guys are called bears but arent furries its. a whole thing that can have cross over but isnt a pup = furry deal. but yeah every pup at a con is a furry. sorry if this is kinda unneeded/unwarranted, its really cool seeing this and your experience!

I use to sell adult content at furry conventions. The only convention I didn’t have to worry about minors seeing our content was at the Reno convention, which had ID stop. But at most cons, minor’s Con Badges had a highlighted names. The reason I no longer go to furry conventions is because there are known child predators that are allowed at these cons. One being an adult vendor called Inked Fur. Growly, a SoCal fur, is friends with allot of California convention runners. He’s been charged for child diddling, yet is still allowed at these cons! Although I’m all for adults being adults, such as pup masks and kink gear, conventions at that point should not be all ages.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for being so kind! I am an artist who just found your channel yesterday and quickly have been gobbling up content in the background while I sew merch for Midwest Furfest! (I make those big fuzzy costumes!!!) The fandom has been a fantastic space for me as someone who has social anxiety, CPTSD, and as someone neurodivergent! Before I made my first fursuit I couldn't look people in the eye or even comment to people online because I was terrified. I needed therapy but couldn't afford it. Putting on the 10 pounds of fur and going to conventions (mostly non-furry conventions at first, it counted as 'cosplay') gave me a chance to interact with people in a safe and often wholesome way. I got to practice making eye contact as I felt comfortable, I got to practice talking to people without judgment, and long story short it led to me passing interviews and eventually running panels and events of my own. And now talking to people all weekend is how I make my living! I make the things that gave me my freedom and joy! I met my partner in the fandom and many of my friends as well, and it helped me discover myself as a disabled person I am so grateful I found a place where I am not just surviving, I can thrive! There are so many amazing people in this fandom who call it home. It's not all sunshine and rainbows but it still deserves kindness and way less judgment than it gets! To answer a few of your questions as someone who makes a living going to furry conventions and has in the past staffed a few. What you described with folks taking off their heads is kind of a meme in the fandom It is called 'breaking the magic' There is some debate and drama about it, way less than in the past but there used to be some public shaming around taking off your head outside of the fursuit lounge. There are still many furries who do have a 'this is Disneyworld' approach to things. I actually get motion sickness from suiting sometimes, I usually pop a Dramamine and go dance but still, I will break the magic as I see fit personally! The shaming has led to people not feeling like they could take their heads off when they really should take their heads off. This is a hobby we are not paid performers. BREATH! The fursuit lounge would not have food. It's usually very sweaty people surrounded by fans and fan towers to hang your sweaty heads or paws. Water water water and sometimes very long straws and some towels. This space is for suiters and handlers only, for the most part, some cons are less strict than others. But in the fandom, there are some people who have their own following, and sometimes a lounge can be a place to get away from fans with sometimes not the best social skills. Or also a place where you can break the magic if no one has seen your real face. Photos aren't allowed in most fursuit lounges. So not all pups are furries and pupheads aren't always fursuit-lite edition. Pups do have their own communities and sometimes will go to furry cons but they also have their own pup events that are usually kink related but not always. They have dog shows and events and rewards etc. I am not a pup but a few of my friends are furries who are also into that. There is a lot of overlap as well. Pup heads at furry cons especially during the daytime is actually a newer trend. In the past, it was frowned upon because of the 'furries are freaks who *insert BS here*' we had to present a very squeaky clean image to the public to get the level of acceptance we have now. At some cons even putting on a collar or harness while in a dog suit was seen as too much into 'kink'.... instead of just being another accessory to express your character. Some fursuit heads have fans that point at the mouth, and some suits have things like cheek fans, ear vents/fans, fans pointing out the mouth, etc. Many suits don't have fans at all though, many people buy those little hand fans from like Walmart and use that sometimes. Many furry conventions are run as nonprofits or not-for-profits and when you start hotel negotiations many contacts include the expectation of not only meeting certain room bookings but also restaurant/food sales being met. If they aren't it will be up to the con to cover up to that amount. This so often leads to a lack of many food options especially affordable ones. I love when a con has food trucks but it is pretty rare for a furry convention to have those, if there are many food options it's usually a pop-up like a hotel did with that bar, and usually very expensive and/or have a quota attached. Some things that are easy for a for profit con to snag can be a hurdle for a not-for-profit. (lack of food has been a big frustrating point for me at many a furry con especially now that undereating is a new migraine trigger I am navigating) You should probably go to Anthrocon. It's a con that had a lot of influence on how other furry cons are run. It also has a great relationship with the city but it didn't always have that. It's come a long way and it's also reflective of how far the fandom has come as well. By the way, there is a Vegas furry convention. It's called Las Vegas Fur Con. It's pretty new but there is much potential there! Anyway, thank you for being so kind and open to our furry weirdness! There is so much creativity (most people made their sona characters) and kindness here! It really is a space that is accepting to many weirdos who can't find a place anywhere else! Much of the fandom is LGBT+ and it can be a very diverse space we try to make our spaces fit many people with many different needs and I think we are made better for it! Id love to one day be that vendor running up to you like 'omg swell?!? I made these paws while watching you'!

I'm glad this con you went to was so focused on protecting minors. That's definitely something that anime cons are missing but need. I see way too many hentai and ecchi art in vendor halls and artist alleys where children are roaming. It's gross. We need more well-defined adult only spaces in general.

14:38 there are actually rooms called ‘headless rooms) that have a bunch of fans where fursuiters can sit and cool down Taking off your fursuit head in main rooms is called ‘breaking the magic’ some people frown upon it but for me who has asthma I don’t think I’d be able to get to a room quickly enough to take my inhaler if it gets hard to breath so I think it’s better for people to break character than suffocate or have a miserable time in their fursuit Especially with how active and animated people in suit often are expected to be

As a furry, I would definitely recommend going to Anthrocon in Pittsburgh, Pa. It is the 2nd largest furry convention in the world, with I think over 13k attendees last year. Also, the way the city gets behind the convention is amazing. Restaurants and bars do furry themed items. They have a huge bl8ck party after the parade that lasts for hours. It's definitely worth the trip.

great video! The reason there are no food vendors inside locations liek these is often because the location itself holds all rights to sell food and they do not allow competitors inside the venue because of competition. A lot of cons have this problem. If you see a con with a special venue like a good hotel or castle ect, chances are the venue owner will not allow food vendor competors inside their location just so they can sell their own food more. Source: lifecong con goer and volunteer and vendor at cons.
