Next at ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, we're checking out with Wise Guy True Overdrive from Lunastone. Unlike most contemporary drive pedals that use an array of clipping diodes to achieve their crunchiness, the Wise Guy is built differently. By using several cascading gain stages, the Wise Guy works just like a tube amp for a real amp-style transparent overdrive that doesn't cut any corners. The Wise Guy offers two distinct types of drive, accessible with a toggle switch. The first mode offers a low-to-medium gain OD with plenty of touch sensitivity and crunch when you dig in. This mode has superb volume-knob cleanup which occurs with a slight turn, and can easily be left on at all times. OD2 offers extra gain and harmonic content for with the same touch sensitivity and more sustain, like an amp pushed to the redline. The Wise Guy offers an all-in-one gain solution by offering a separate Boost footswitch. This mode can be used even when the overdrive circuit is in bypass, giving players a super-clean boost for solos, or as an always-on preamp. The overdrive circuit sits before the boost section when used in series, and the boost circuit alone offers a 15-decibel wallop. Engaging both circuits simultaneously unleashes an overdrive that fuses with your amp to bring out its inner werewolf. Each Lunastone pedal is made using top-quality components and connectors, and is wired for true bypass switching.

First of all it is a pleasant surprise to hear the actual gear demo'd used for the intro - nice and honest. Nextly it is also soothing not be blasted in a shockwave of 'Hi my name's Something Important and this is the real (word your mother don't like) doods. Thank you Andy. What you say about the Wise Guy and the Big Fella also on test has helped me subtly. Being an old git into original rock (60s, 70s) I like the red pedal but the crucial part is how you mention that it 'sounds like a tube amp being pushed'. Now I realise why at lower volumes my sound is too harsh - because to get the tone I prefer, the amp has to be driven like a lap of the IOM TT: smooth, keep up the momentum and push push push. As a Boss ME50 user I obviously have a lot o stuff to play with - but the big pain is getting exactly the same OD tone across the array of patches - so I started looking at one overdrive to put on front of it. Like I said, old fashioned - I dpn't need modelling amps to chase a range of tones - I just need a good expressive tone that lets my playing speak. And beyond what I'm finding inn the array of COSM stuff with the Boss, I think a Wise Guy might be the vehicle I need for a constant. I know night air, outdoors, small, big, gigs all differ. But controlled feedback shouldn't just dissappear. Thanks again.

This pedal sound awesome. I wonder if the boost section it is before or after the overdrive.

how is this different from the tone city model m pedal setting aside the model m having independent gain control on both od1 and od2 switch?

My amp is a werewolf? That explains why it disappears once a month, returning covered in blood and bits of flesh. Always thought it was moonlighting in a GWAR cover band!

i mean it was still technically moonlighting

Sounds good. just like most 'boutique' pedals overpriced imo, unless you melt it down and it has $100 worth of silver or gold in it?

A good friend of mine builds 'overpriced' boutique pedals for a living. A lot of people seem to be forgetting the fact that brand X sells 1.000 pedals a month and he builds less than 100. So not alone does he have to make the same amount of money out of 10% of the pedals, stocking parts is also more expensive when you don't buy in bulk like brand x. There's another reason a lot of this stuff is 'overpriced'. Not only has the builder got to make a living, PGS also needs their cut. But...that friend also stated that he used to build differently and cheaper and no one bought his pedals. Since he builds PTP with NOS parts and increased his prices people started buying his gear
