Will OD be in the D and D campaign I don’t think Matt has mentioned him before but he seems great and I would love to see him in it. Anna and Toms too.
It's gonna be 360p for a while while the video processes. I don't expect this video to do very well, as I sense all the folks out there who want more Running the Game, some folks are waiting for the D&D campaign, some folks are jonesing for more Campaign Diaries, but this is a huge milestone for us. Think about everything that had to happen to get this video up. We needed an office, a truss, lights, cameras, microphones, the hardware and software to record and mix it all and the furniture for the set. I don't imagine watching us play Codenames for an hour is going to be *very* entertaining, but I'm incredibly proud of this video. This is the first multicamera video I've ever edited and it went pretty well AND I learned a lot! Everything else will happen; weekly RtG, the Campaign, everything's happening. But we're gonna make more videos like this, more and different games, How To Play, all sorts of stuff. This is just the beginning....
It's a 4k video. Right now, it's viewable at 1080p and you can clearly see the words unless you're on mobile. If you're watching on a phone...probably no solution will fix that.
It looks fantastic so far Matt! I know it's just a test but this bodes extremely well for the future and is starting to build proper hype for the campaign :)
I know you expressed worry about viewers not wanting to watch people play tabletop/board games, but not only do I watch a channel that does just that as part of the Live content (LoadingReadyRun), I also really enjoy this sort of stuff for precisely the fun back and forth which is presented by friends playing games together and enjoying one another's company. I think it would very much fit with the sort of aesthetic you are trying to create with "making the viewer feel as though their at the table" and I think it is a great form of content that can fill in those slots when RPG campaigns or oneshots are not available to be streamed (since they do typically take a significant larger amount of setup, due to needing a Game Master who can prep a game).
I watch LRR too, I love AFK as it gives me something to put on for a few hours while I mess about in Eve Online on the other monitor or sit in bed. (HEROQUEST!!!!)
I've been watching for about 30 seconds and I have a serious question. Is O.D. a real person or just a figment of everyone's collective imagination of a British voice????
Does Matt not know what a palm reader is? Like, someone who reads palms? I was *dying* during some of these clues. Bit tip of the hat to the clue givers, with their completely stoic faces!
The audio is great and the cameras on your lovely faces are awesome! The actual codename cards are hard to read but I understand you were just trying to get them all in one shot. This is a really cool setup. I've been watching your videos for a little over a year now and it's very exciting to see all this come together!
One of my favorite moments: "Each card is a part of this game"! I was laughing so hard the whole video. Phenomenal job Matt, and I am looking forward to the amazing content you guys are providing just by being yourselves. Ninja edit: I also would love to see your group play Twilight Imperium!
I just bought TI4 2 weeks ago, finally got players and we are going to play it for the first time this weekend. Would be really cool to see these guys play it as well.
And I am not one of those people who say "You must do the thing!" (despite my previous comment lol) but if you could find the players to play Diplomacy, with secret meetings that are recorded... I have to imagine that would be a major hit. Well I would watch it, no one else might.
Oooo play webdiplomacy.net/ with the 12-24 hour turns. And you could record the secret meetings on phones. Then after the game edit it all together. Would be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG project but could be good. Shut up and sit down/Cool Ghosts did a similar thing for Subterfuge ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fsvuv_kJ9qQ.html and that was great (well I thought so).
Well... the D&D campaign is going to have a diplomacy game happening that will impact the state of the city. Matt said the city will be setup for takeover and there will be diplomacy players will be determining the the moves of the guilds (and maybe other political powers). So it will be interesting to see how that impacts the political aspects of Matt's game.
Matt, edits in videos like this make them a JOY! to watch. The solid snake sounds every now and again *Italian finger kiss* wouldn't ask nessaserilly for more just to please keep it up (more is always welcome I love edited videos)
I know you're posting this for feedback, so here's mine: I wasn't sure about the bookshelf idea when originally pitched, but now I love it. I love seeing Axis and Allies, the Green Power Ranger helmet, Zelda figures, and whatnot. It makes the place feel lived-in, like you're actually friends and you're actually having fun. Having that one camera hanging out in Tom's view actually makes it a bit charming in my opinion. It looks like this thing is effortless, and it makes me forget that it's a produced show. And I've worked in radio and stage crew; I know about production.
Oh god yes, this is the fix i need after Wil Wheaton's Tabletop ended. PLEASE upload more random tabletop games with your friends. I don't need an explanation or a lot of editing, I can google the rules, I just love seeing you play with your friends!
I like the "Hollywood Squares" individual layout in general. Hopefully, it doesn't obscure which players are side-talking to each other, but I think that should be apparent in game. The sound levels are even and clean for everyone without over-gain blowing out the consonants, and we can understand multiple speakers simultaneously without it going muddy. There seems to be some stereo lateral bias per channel based on sitting position, which helps track individual voices, so good there. It's showing available in full HD range, but at 480p each player is still clear enough to look real. I'd say it's ready to go live with a game session.
Has this exercise with Codenames given you guys a better picture of when we might expect to start seeing the D&D stream? I think I remember hearing a tentative guess of some time in September, but has that changed at all? Also, sorry if this has been elaborated on in the Strongholds & Streaming updates.
Oh my gosh Matt, you're so competitive XD I loved watching this, would definitely support seeing more on the channel. The game itself is really entertaining to watch and was easy to pick up- I am 100% going to be purchasing a copy of Codenames. It's especially fun to watch the banter. I don't think you should feel discouraged from posting videos like this as people aren't watching you just for your info; your personality alone is a draw. Also, please never do that awful British accent again :P
That was cool! It was a lot of fun listening to you guys and trying to figure out the clues with you AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT RING WASN'T IT AT THE END BECAUSE FIGHTING/WRESTLING RINGS. I'd love to see more of this kind of stuff! Thanks for posting :)
Looks AWESOME Matt et Co.! The lighting and filters are great. The layout of the cameras on the screen (did that make sense?) is well done as well. Can't wait for the stream!
Enjoying watching, and looks/sounds good. Only thing I'd change is to cut to full screen on the cards every now and again, they are a little small to read
This content was really awesome. Felt super natural and not overproduced or fake feeling. I always got a little "people are overacting" and felt like my hand was being held when the video would cut to explanations in other content. Would often ruin the pace. The couple of sound and graphical edits were minimal and fit really well.
Loved the video :) a couple things I think might have made it a little easier to follow 1. I think the board with all the actual cards should have been in a larger window so it would be easier to read. 2. If you could have put the codename your guys were on in the overlay I think it could have been a bit easier to follow without having to pay 100% attention to the video.
I like, that there is a recording of this session (on Twitch all but one are gone) but i would appreciate the uncut-version even more. All the thinking and all the banter are part of games like this.
Pretty fun. A classic game helps, of course ^^... I found the words themselves hard to read. Maybe for your next 'names-play, the colour card could be smaller, and the words screen could be larger--perhaps overlapping the corners of the 4 cameras on that side or something. But whatevs--you're doing great. Looking forward to more!
Wow. That's a really slick format Matt! Your guys' hard work definitely shows. Every aspect looks/sounds/feels professional (which, I guess you are, so... haha) Great job!
Code Names is much better played with just a clue and no number at the end. The team wants to guess as many as they can but the more they guess, the greater their chance to land on a bad tile.
Hey checking in, your video quality is Bonkers. Od and some other cameras have fantastic lighting others needs some tweaking as you know.. I was surprised by the MGS sound and visual effect, Good audio quality all-around.
Sir, the video quality and sound... it is a joy and I CAN NOT WAIT for future streams. Am I drunk? Very well, I am drunk. I am a barback, I can drink multitudes.
This is fantastic. Definitely want to see more D&D stuff but I love board games too. I encourage you to make this a regular thing, and maybe do something like the old Tabletop show on G&S where you give a quick explanation of the rules beforehand.
Great game, I play all the time. Suggestion: put the clue and # on the screen in post next time (Ex: Halloween 3). Your convos take a while and viewers may forget what clue you are on. Cheers!
Matt when is the next video coming. Don’t rush just wondering you are my favorite RU-vidr by far and so I’m just excited for a new one. August/September Q and A?
I was only planning on watching 10-15 minutes of this, but the new rounds kept coming and I couldn't pull myself away :D I'd absolutely love to try this game now!
I thought you couldn't spell your clues! For example, you could mean be referring to both "knight" and "night" in the same hint, or it's possible that you weren't thinking of the homophone and it throws your teammates off. Adds another fun layer of depth for some words
Don't understand the rules of what you're playing there, and it's not really what i come here for. That being said, i'll keep it running in a background tab for watchtime, leave this Comment for Engagement, and then there's the Thumbs Up aswell, because even if this is not for me, maybe the engagement will help the algorythm show it to someon that will like it.
I honestly really enjoyed this (despite never having played/watched people play code names before). You had a good group dynamic with good banter, and the setup was pretty good. I can't wait to see how you progress!
And suddenly I've spent an hour watching some people on the internet play Codenames. But it was very enjoyable. Keep up the good work Matt and MCDM! :D
Matt wasn't smug about that last win at all ;) hahaha (tbf though getting Pound was some psychic bs so I don't blame you!) never knew about this game before, seems pretty fun!
I think Last Game Wins would make a great ongoing series. The length of the video is great for these kinds of board games and social games. The set looks good and the people playing are all having fun hanging out with each other. I feel like I'm in the living room with a bunch of friends. This makes me pumped even more for the D&D game.
Just FYI I'm pretty sure if you guess wrong it's immediately the other teams turn to go. Otherwise loved the content. Hopefully will find new games to buy through you guys xD
I think you have little to worry about from this community in terms of not giving us the exact content we're looking for yet. For one thing, a good chunk of people are going to enjoy these things since they have similar interests to you. Those that don't still understand that this is a process, and you have given plenty of updates to instill confidence that things are moving forward. We are behind you! The anticipation continues to build in the best possible way.
Sound note: the way your bass levels are set makes it sound a little hollow, perhaps reduce them a little or bump the mids? Listening with a surround setup or with a sub woofer makes this more apparent. This phenomenon seems to be unique to this setup, as subwoofer doesn't buzz in this way during videos filmed at Matt's home
This was just great! And it WAS fun to watch. The cards vould have been bigger - hard to read on my 5 inch phone screen :D still enjoied this. Want more !
I started watching your channel for running the game, then discovered the DnD sessions, then saw your movie discussions and then your 4 hr Dune sessions. now I am a matt colville addict. You are the Avatar of the God of Entertainment.
Also if people are literally sitting adjacent to each other it would be much easier for me if they were on the same camera together. They way it is now makes a little disorienting. Especially when people turn towards the left edge of the screen (on RU-vid) but they're talking to someone who's video is placed off to the right.
Goire like noire fucked me up...... never heard 'gore' pronounced like that. for Migrate there was four, if you consider wild game (as in Deer and what not).
not sure who o.d. is but that guy is fucking hilarious. also; hot edit, but you might consider making the game video larger, it was hard to read in some cases, especially if you play games with more fiddly bits.
Unfortunately, your aim seems to be to repeat the true gaming experience, which includes making it impossible to read the words on the codename cards. If I was able to read the cards I would love to watch this video.
Great game with a great group of players. Everything looks good as far as quality goes. Sound is good as far as I can tell, bad ears and all. My only little nit pic is seeing the cameras in the frames, not a fan, they draw my attention away from the action.
Oh and can I shape a game story into a d&d campaign? I’m kinda new and you have a lot of videos, You have helped me a lot for being a dm already so! Thank you very much!
Hey Matt can you make a D&D video on saving throws. Ive tried so hard to learn it and always failed. All your D&D videos really helped me learn. Hope you can help.
You definitely want to play against OD in codenames. Over analyses everything to the point where he randomly picks a card in the end. Good fun guy though.
Wes' comment about O.D.'s attempts to break down what 'football 4' meant - "why don't you follow that train of thought and see where it goes" had me lmao
Love the visual setup. You were very successful in your goal of making it so that when players look at other players they are also looking toward their video box on screen. Keep up the good work
Some of the cuts in the edit are jarring, there was one in the last game that cut Matt off mid sentence. I enjoy the sound effects. The camera of the board could be larger. And the colours for the game switched but the borders didn’t change so that was confusing.
Also, after the massive debate over which kind of football and whether Hand worked for football or not, Biology was a bit of a dodgy clue given that Hand is wrong.
