Lunge Feeding Blue Whales: Rare Drone Footage of this Spectacular Behavior!

A drone shot so rare it might as well be a myth: a surface-lunge feeding Blue Whale! Prior to last summer I had never seen a Blue Whale surface lunge feeding on krill. In fact, prior to last year I had never even seen krill on the surface! While this isn’t the first time I’ve filmed this behavior, it IS the first time I can share it with you all here on social media!
With upwards of 100 Blue Whales currently residing in San Diego waters, Erica, Kyle, and I decided to spend the day zooming around the offshore waters of San Diego in hopes of filming something special. We never dreamed that we’d stumble upon a massive area of surface feeding whales nearly 20 miles from shore! Everywhere you looked there was a lunge feeding Fin or Blue Whale!
If you enjoyed this special footage, please like, subscribe, and share!
If you want to see Blue Whales with me in person please visit www.gonewhalewatching.com and book a tour this summer!
Filmed by myself: Domenic Biagini and Kyle Christensen

I saw a blue whale from a plane once. We took off from LAX and curved out over the ocean. This was about ten years ago. There is no mistaking the silhouette of a blue whale from above. I was so shocked I couldn't even shout out for everyone to look. They are so beautiful. The sight lifted my heart and gave me hope for our troubled planet. I hope many more people will see them.

Yeah, you’re right. I removed my comment. Unfortunately the more people there are the more food and planet resources we need. Im pretty sure it’s not as bad as the media makes it sound. In fact just in the last 50+ years man has recognized the importance of conservation and have actually saved many species from extinction. Conservation laws have been in place for many different animals and have prevented their demise. Life can be very resilient as long as man acts responsibly.

Are Lunging Blue Whales by any chance blind, or am I? If it is me who's missing something, may I please trouble you to add a time-stamp into a reply, in which the whale's eyes are visible. Thanks.

The beautiful lines running down from the tip of their mouths & down their bodies, their graceful movements, omg. Part of it is the way they deal with predators. Blue whales and most rorquals tend to flee without fighting back when confronted by predators such as orca so they have a leaner torpedo shape and don't have any body "armor" like callosities and barnacles. Whereas right and humpback whales tend to fight back so they have a more chunky maneuverable shape and attachments like barnacles. Humpbacks have them on their fins to act like giant knuckledusters.

Very impressive! Calories per lunge is hugely important. The amount of energy needed to open their gigantic mouths combined with the increased drag means they could burn more calories than they gain if the krill patch isn't large enough. Luckily for us, we live in a time where the sea produces massive amounts of their food. This has allowed their greatly increased sizes to evolve in a relatively short period of time. That and the extinction of mega predators like the megaldon shark and Livyatan whale. Great footage.
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 26 дней назад
Not so. Reports of Blue whale and humpbacks off Australia show some very lean whales that have not been able to adequately feed. 400,000 of tonnes of krill were netted from the Southern ocean by factory boats in 2020 and with climate change the great south polar current is speeding up affecting habitat for wales. Scientists are very worried about the impact on baleen whales from increasing krill capture.

The Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus) is a large rorqual native everywhere in the ocean, it is known for being the largest animal alive today, it is the only extant species of the genus Sibbaldius, its closest living relative is the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), both belong to the subfamily Megapterinae, which also includes the minke whales (genus Pterobalaena).
@tursiopsgirl8
@tursiopsgirl8 20 дней назад
Based on the World Register of Marine Species (WORMS) blue whales are actually Balaenoptera musculus (Linnaeus, 1758). Sibbaldius is an out of date naming.
@indyreno2933
@indyreno2933 20 дней назад
@tursiopsgirl8, nope, the Balaenoptera genus is polyphyletic, the only species of the genus is the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), all rorquals belong to the family Balaenopteridae but not all rorquals belong to the genus Balaenoptera, only the fin whale does Based on this classification, all other extant rorquals are now believed to be more closely related to the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) than they are to the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), for this reason, all these eight other extant rorqual species are relocated to four separate genera, Rudolphius for only the Sei Whale (Rudolphius borealis), Rorqualus for the Omura's Whale (Rorqualus omurai), Rice's Whale (Rorqualus ricei), Bryde's Whale (Rorqualus brydei), and Eden's Whale (Rorqualus edeni), Pterobalaena for the two species of minke whale being the Arctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena acutorostrata) and the Antarctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena bonaerensis), and Sibbaldius for only the Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus) Not only there are now six extant genera of rorquals (family Balaenopteridae), there are also in fact three subfamilies of rorquals, Balaenopterinae for only the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), Rudolphiinae for the Sei Whale (Rudolphius borealis), Omura's Whale (Rorqualus omurai), Rice's Whale (Rorqualus ricei), Bryde's Whale (Rorqualus brydei), and Eden's Whale (Rorqualus edeni), and Megapterinae for the Arctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena acutorostrata), Antarctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena bonaerensis), Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus), and Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), with the subfamilies Rudolphiinae and Megapterinae being sister taxa to the exclusion of Balaenopterinae, thus making the fin whale the most distantly related from all the other extant rorquals.
