Your videos convinced me to start watching Lupin III and so far I've really enjoyed everything I've seen! I started with Castle of Cagliostro, then Woman Called Fujiko Mine and now I've seen first few episodes of Part 4. So I just wanted to say thank you for that!
No problem! Thanks for watching! I'm so swamped with my personal life, but I'm wrapping up the next part to this video (and hopefully the rest of them, if life treats me well)
Here in Italy it's so hard to find someone who hasn't seen at least one episode of Lupin! It's engraved in our pop culture, you can often find people wearing t-shirts and such :)
Good to see this yet again, i am still hyped for later instalments, and part 6! Either way i will happily wait with fated breath. Keep up the good work, and have a nice day.
33:54 there's a part of Japanese 60' sexuality that you actually miss. If you search specific material regarding sex scenes in old Japanese movies you'll find out there's always a considerable part of violence related to sexual interaction. In part, this is due to the great misogyny that dominates the Japanese culture, still in the '60s, even though culturally we were entering worldwide the new era of the Student protests, the hippie movement, and so on...you can't evaluate it from a Western point of view in 2022. There are a lot of behaviors that are intolerable in different cultures, and in a different eras...Can you accept that a male can force a woman to remain illiterate and totally covered under a burka? not in North America, but in Afghanistan it's normal right now...
"you can't evaluate it from a Western point of view in 2022" That's a great point. Never considered that, in my long rant haha I didn't even think to mention that. It's weird, because I find myself able to excuse the rest of the violence, but the sexual stuff just alienates me. Different cultural attitudes, and ofc different opinions. There are people who find that important to the Lupin identity, and they've revived some resemblance of that in Woman Called Fujiko Mine (sorta) and that's fine. Just wasn't for me
I really like the video but maybe you should have had more of a script or something. You bring up the rape topic like eight times, while not adding anything after the third time.
True, while I did have a script, I could've talked less about it. It stuck out to me the most about Part 1, given how nearly episode ends up having moments of sexual violence (same with the manga) but there are more things worth spending time with Lupin's character that the show emphasized on. A mistake on my end, but again, a more opionated take on the show's impact
Nah you right, I honestly made the intro way too long, that's something I wouldn't do for the rest of the videos. Legit tho, if I get another copyright strike, I might consider that XD
Glad you got this reuploaded. I think it’s great that you plan to do a retrospective on each Lupin Part because Lupin content on RU-vid is almost non existent which is shocking for a 50 year old anime. Nice to see a content creator in the West tackle on Lupin the 3rd. 👍
Thanks! I hope I don't have to take much longer, and that copyright doesn't plague me. I'm shocked too many people on youtube shy away from this show, but I can see why. Overwhelming content, luckily that's what I'm here for :)
Hi! Want a general overview over the other parts? Check this video out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o9M6lPiRrFg.html Hey there, this is a reupload, hopefully nothing happens and it doesn't get taken down. Nevertheless, enjoy this long overview of the very first show Lupin ever had!
@@woopin3899 You did too? Interesting. TMS anime blocked the video because of clips from the Part 1 show. I still showed them in this video but I either flipped or cut them and changed to something else, I suspect if this problem happens again I'll have to not have much of the show's clips altogether. Which would be a shame, oh well
@@donovanaustinjr3708 Yup. It follows fair use, I guess if the owners aren't too happy they have no problem making the strikes. Coincidentally or not, other youtubers with Lupin content suffered similarly, now I'm more concerned about my previous uploads. But still, it follows fair use, as long as no one is monetizing or claiming the content as their own, I see no issues. Content ID is kinda whack
I think there's a fine balance (one that's not always achieved) in the whole sexual explicitness of Lupan. I like the (part 2) blend of humor and horniness quite a bit, and I think it works best for the franchise when it's shown as his achilles heel- the thing that turns a generally intelligent master thief into a gibbering idiot. There's something charming about the sincerity and immediacy of his id kicking into high gear, especially given that he's not depicted as particularly strong or emblematic of manliness. Then again there are levels, and some media isn't for everyone. I'm a gal that's become a connoisseur of 70's exploitation cinema, including the 'pink' film genre of Japan- and hell it's a very mixed bag- but at it's best- the genre can give you savvy, sexually liberated heroins - and for all the ups and downs, Fujiko is emblematic of the kind of awesome adventurous adult women you seldom get to see in media. I think Wings of Death Albatross is an excellent example of this balance in action.
Wings of Death Albatross did strike that balance well. Miyazaki's portrayal of Lupin I guess is my preferred take on the character, but I also think that take loses a lot of the darker roots that the Woman Called Fujiko Mine could tap into -- I'm definitely open to interpretations. So long as they don't stray too far into the rapey side of things, but hey that's just me haha
Recently got back into Lupin, I remember watching it on Adult Swim late at night. Re-Watching Part II has really gotten my nostalgia going. Thank you for making this type of content, there are so many theories and things in the continuity that I would love to see Deep Dives in. You rock
Yeah no problem! It's a lot of fun making stuff like this, a lot of work and research to make sure what I'm saying is true ofc, but fun nonetheless! Thanks for watching!
Nice introduction! Your pronunciation of Japanese names are pretty spot on, too. (But please do not keeping to put -san after names in the analyzing/explaining videos like this. It might be from the respect, I understand, but it sounds unnecessary. ) For me, the first season's theme song sung by Charlie Kosei, which I heard first, is the special one.
I agree that the 60’s version and the manga may go too far with the sex jokes but this goes hand in hand with the violence of these versions (which disturbs me a lot more usually). I like Lupin as a clever horny man as he is now rather than a rapist killer, that’s for sure. Nudity doesn’t bothers me at all though.
Well, I'm sorry but in France almost nobody knows lupin III... That's a shame because lupin is french and lots of episodes are in France. I think it's due to the previous name (Edgar de La Cambriole) that was absolutely not refering to Arsène Lupin and now the show is too old for people... I'm so desperate
Really? Yeah, that's so strange... you'd think Lupin would be a big thing in France. I know for a fact it's huge in Italy and Japan. Maybe it's not big in France, I wonder how much bigger (or smaller even) it is there vs in America. Lupin's always been the niche older anime people seem to have heard of, but know very little. Exposure for this show was practically nonexistent for a while
Yeah, there are def a lot of western fans of other crime shows who would like Lupin but haven't heard of the guy. I don't consider him super underrated, but despite running for 50 years, his shows (and movies) are definitely not the first thing on people's minds. I'm hoping that will change in time, but it's hard to say. I'm thankful though we have access to some of his content, minimal as it may be. I'm waiting for more blu rays to come out, that'll be exciting!
Just started watching part 1 with the dub recently and so far have really enjoyed it. The humor is kinda dated but it's still a good time. Do you know of any sites to get the blu rays or DvD sets? I've been looking for a while now but can't seem to find any in the US that aren't super expensive.
So, when it comes to blu rays for Part 1, I couldn't find much. I found a DVD set for it on Amazon, and blu rays i could find for Parts 2-5 farily easily on Amazon, hopefully it's still there. Prime Video, Crunchyroll, and HiDive have the show streaming -- so there are options for that there. Physical mediums, for Part 1 especially, isn't easy to find sadly. The same can be said for the movies/tv specials as well from the 70s-90s. Amazon or eBay are your best places, I'd say Amazon out of convenience since shipping can be pretty fast. You'd prolly have to pay 30-40 dollars for a DVD set of part 1, as of writing this.
Earlier this week they started releasing a new English dub of part 1. How do you like this version? Also Fujiko: I'm getting kidnapped way to often in this franchise. April: Hold my COWA BUNGA
Yeah, the english dub is.. interesting. It's what I hoped in the sense that it features my fav voice cast, but they also got the video quality of the episode a little janky. I suspect they'll release a blu-ray that has all the episodes dubbed someday. It's fine for what it is I guess. By April, I assume you're referring to April O' Neil? Yeah, she's a damsel in distress pretty often. In the OG TMNT comics she does help out a bit but she's reduced to a damsel at times since she doesn't have much fighting skills. TMNT 2007 fixed that issue by making her have combat ability, but idk if that's canon to the source material. Either way, great change. Fujiko in the "Part" shows gets kidnapped a lot, def. I found her character in her spinoff series to be marvelous, simply because she's more deep and mysterious than ever before.
@@SNKJay The show even commented on how often April get's kidnapped. I loved how in the Turtles forever movie the turtles arrived in their home dimension but before doing anything they just knew they had to go and save April as it happens on a regular basis. I find both characters similar in the way that both of them are increadibly hard to balance. In the 2011 show she became a student of Splinter and suddenly was able to keep up with the guys. Because a couple of days of training equals being trained to become Ninja from birth. At the other end of the spectrum you have 87 where she literally is just a plot device for the guys to save. The 2004 show got a great balance with April being capable of defending herself but when she got in over her head the turtles needed to provide aid. Same with Fujiko. On the one end you have plot device trapped in a tickle/strip machine Fujiko. On the other side you have machine gun weilding Lupin and his gang outfiring Badass Fujiko. Somewhere in the middle you have a Fujiko who's charme and wit is her weapon of choice. I think that's very well portrayed in voyage to danger, where Fujiko just plays with Klotz for the entire movie.
I don't wanna say I wouldn't like a part one dub, but honestly I would rather they finish the part 2 dub, especially since that series is so much more approachable for the average viewer
I agree! It seems the english dub is in licensing hell for whatever reason, I'd love for that to get finished. The final few episodes were awesome from Part 2, gave me Miyazaki vibes (partly because he worked on them I believe)
Yeah, I'm there with ya. Although, in hindsight I was able to fix some edits I made from the original video. Copyright got me in the rear, which is why this was reuploaded
