Lupus can have a lot of false negatives, and won't ever text positive. Sometimes it's diagnosed by observation.

I know you have already contacted the court but due to your recent diagnosis/ medical findings you can definitely write to the judge or contact the court and explain the situation. By putting it in writing you can explain sincerely and succinctly about your concerns about your health and ability to fulfill the treatment plan, as well as the worry about unexpected side effects. They want to know if there will be a burden that being in a grand jury would put on you. They probably don’t care about your employment/work concerns as much as they would want to know your health conditions/concerns, and also state you can provide any proof that they need in order to substantiate your diagnosis, and that you can make that available to them if requested. They honestly don’t want to waste their time or your spot on someone else they could possibly choose that would be “better”. You well have an opportunity to fill out paperwork when registering and the judge will ask if anyone has a doubt or worry about limitations in participating, and each person that expresses that they do it will get called up to the judge to privately discuss the concerns they have. So even if you contact the court/write to the judge and were to get a negative response- you should still express your concerns when the judge asks and bring paperwork that would support your diagnosis etc. But they will appreciate if you contact them beforehand and fully express your reservations. And you can contact the judge any time while undergoing the selection process or if you were selected and feel uncomfortable with demands/commitment and effect on your health etc. In my experience, which is admittedly somewhat limited, being married to and working for a lawyer who actively litigates, i would recommend that you clearly express that you have some chronic autoimmune health conditions, specifically your doctor has recently diagnosed you with SCLE, which is a form of Lupus. And these conditions have unanticipated flare-ups and regularly cause a variety of systemic side effects as well as physical and mental limitations which you believe would affect your ability to make a commitment to the court. That you are currently undergoing rigorous testing and under the care of several specialists because of the impact and severity of the health issues you have and due to the nature of autoimmune diseases, you can’t predict when you will have gastrointestinal problems, allergic reactions, extreme fatigue, pain, etc... or need to get specialized medical treatment and take medications etc.. etc.. Moreover, you have serious doubts about your ability to consistently meet the demands of being in a grand jury over any long period of time and also have doubts about fulfilling the daily requirements when the court is in session. You are currently undergoing evaluation and treatments to address your health concerns which involves a lot of appointments and needing the flexibility to visit a doctor if/when a concern arises. Managing your health means you have to schedule your life around any side effects that emerge, carry out the treatment plan from your medical team, and carry out a daily routine aimed at preventing any flare ups and staying in good health. Thus you do not believe you can reliably meet the physical requirements of sitting for long periods of time, not using the bathroom when needed, and staying focused and alert. You also believe the schedule of the court will affect your health and your ability to undergo and seek medical treatment for current issues and those that may arise in the future due to having the type of Lupus you do. Doctors are currently trying to fully diagnose and understand the severity of your illness and because you are self employed you are able to generally balance work and life and healthcare needs, and you do not believe in good faith that you could fulfill the daily requirements of participating in a grand jury. You also worry that the commitment would come at the expense of your health and your ability to manage and treat your illness. I know that jury selection is one of the most important and serious aspects of a trial and both the court and legal team have a huge amount of respect and appreciation for those chosen to serve on juries and as well as all the people that actually show up and are honest but don’t get chosen for one reason or another. By bringing your concerns to the courts attention you are helping them choose people who wound not be extraordinarily burdened by participating or be unable to meet the rigorous schedule and demands of court’s schedule. They will already be worried about picking extra alternates due to Covid and people dropping out because of exposure or infection. And they will want to know if you have any reluctance or worry about being thoughtful, prepared and physically capable, not distracted, unwell etc... or simply feel well enough to attend day in and day out. I have a chronic disease and know that scheduling appointments and dealing with routine medical care is a part-time job on its own so dealing with the stress of normal life and a health condition as well as work in a relationship is very hard. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expressing your concerns to the court in due to your recent diagnosis it’s only fair to tell them that you are unsure of what your health care demands or physical side effects will be in the future. No judge/lawyer wants a juror that is over burdened, resentful for being there or uncomfortable for one reason or another. And you have a very legitimate reason to be worried and doubtful about a commitment as serious and long-term as a grand jury. But I do think you should write to the judge/court in contacting you to your recent diagnosis because they don’t want to waste their time or yours if you can explain your current health situation proactively.

Yes! This with the health issues and stress being a trigger should absolutely be reason enough. Her health is so important, it just sucks all around.

Also, my jury duty was 4 months for one day a month! It wasn't a full year! From what I understand, every county is different!

I also have it in my lungs. It's like a constant cough and lack of breath. I am on a medication called Hydroxychloroquin and it's helped my lungs alot!

also since ive been through similar health stuff skin digestion headaches etc etc I just want to say youre not alone! I had the same scare with SCLE. You will absolutely get through this!

My mom had systemic lupus not skin lupus.
