Lure Fishing for Perch and Pike is becoming incredibly popular. Especially with ultra light rods, reels and jigs. Mike goes through the best lures and jigs to use for Perch, as well as how to set up your lure for jig fishing. Here in the UK, 'slow jigging' as it is sometimes known, can be deadly for Perch, especially in the winter when there is less weed about and you can hope your lure along the bottom of the river/lake bed. Often in summer however, the rivers are very weedy. Whilst it can pay off to opt for a weedless approach, there are ways of finding and catching Perch with your standard jig heads. And that is Pocket casting! Find small holes in the weed, especially ones near the margins, and slowly jig your lure up and down. It has worked for us on so many occasions. Hope you guys enjoy the video! :)

Agree to heavy jigs-hooks it can damage, no doubt about it. I use this for Pike or zander . . . but anyways it catch also big Perch. Small Jigs 4 or 5 grams have smaller hooks . . . and works perfect less damage ! Prob is too heavy / strong rods are less forgiving ( plus water pressure make this damage too the mouth and also up-lifting or net. I catch so much Perch in a year, and learn to use a leader. Great Tip use always Fluor or Nylon with stretch in it, on braid that really helps and catch more too . . . and solves most prob. Hope you notice that Mike, even when you get snagged why u use this rod. And I know you respect the fish Mike and hope you consider this option with braid. Its new school versus old school fishing.

Hi TA team great show as always. Mike If ever you want to try a soon for perch. Here in Canada i tend to use Panther Martin. Silver seems to be the best color "White Feather All Silver Red Hook Silver" or "Fly Silver/Orange" are great catchers size 2. A tad small and tend to catch chubs as well but its all good fun. I will not post the address out of respect for TA just look up Panther Martin on google.

Hi again Mike , some advice needed , I am going touring in a camper van for a few months in the spring, solely to fish,[ lucky me] I need an ultra light spinning travel rod to put in my shoulder bag while wandering, predominantly for trout ,perch , chub in lakes ,lochs n rivers,I looked at the Nomura travel rod , 5 piece but think it would struggle to cast lures 2 to 8 grams and the Blackrock Geotrex has some bad reviews for casting a similar weight, can you recommend a travel rod that would do the job please ?
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 5 лет назад
Mike away at present,but that 5-piece Nomura is the only travel rod we have,might be a bit stiff for light lures,what about a heavier type LRF ?
@brynmitchell5774

@@TAFishing Hi Graeme, thanks for replyng , really want ultra light, in particular for throwing 2 to 10 gram trout lures, hoping to supplement my budget whilst on the road by eating what I can catch, River Piker has suggested Savage gear Roadrunner, 3 to 16 grams , so may go for that , may even try a small multiplier as I only have fixed spools, thanks for replying Graeme.

Too many people think that pike will simply cut through fluorocarbon like a pair of scissors. If you’re sensible and give the fish line when they need it they’ll never cut through it. All it means is you’ll have to re tie after catching one

Hi Mike/Graham I watch your videos on light lure fishing/drop shorting and I am using a light lure spinning real and rod, not a hugely expensive set up (under £100) I use all light gear plastic baits, max weight 10-15grammes max, most of the time 3-7grammes. I'm really interested in knowing if you'd ever considered using a low profile baitcaster, and if you did which one would you recommend. Thanks David
@thomasmorris9022
@thomasmorris9022 7 лет назад
Dave Richards I actually use a low profile baitcaster for perch fishing but I usually target bigger perch. If you want to use baits + lures in the 5g-15g range, then a baitcaster is great. I also prefer using a baitcaster for any hardbaits like spinners or crankbaits etc, but thats just me. But if you are doing ultralight fishing, then you should stick to a fixed spool, because of how baitcasters work, you need at least 4-5g of wieght on your lure.

@thomasmorris9022
@thomasmorris9022 7 лет назад
Dave Richards a fairly cheep set up would be... Reel: Abu Garcia Silver Max (choose this over black or pro max because of the flipping switch feature) Rod: Abu Garcia Devil Casting Rod (5-20g) Line: Power Pro (or any other decent make of Braid) from 10-30lb strain depending on situation. Or, you could opt for flurocarbon. Using a baitcaster also allows you to use flurocarbon AS A MAINLINE, and you would use something from 8-20lb strain depending on the situation.

interesting that you tie your fluorocarbon leader to the braid with a small swivel rather than the fiddly albright knot. does this not effect the way the lure acts underwater?
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 7 лет назад
I do use the albright knot occasionally, but given that I am only moving the lure a small amount, I'm not too worried about the action, as it just hops a few inches off the bottom

Nope I have used similar for drops hotting, but ideally you want something with a little bit of backbone so that if you snag you can get lures back and if you hook into a larger fish you can be more confident. But light tackle is still super fun - Mike

why do you use barbed doesnt it hurt the fish?
@markmason13
@markmason13 7 лет назад
Barbless hooks can move in the mouth whilst playing the fish, causing larger holes and tearing, once a barbed hook is in it stays in and tends not to move. When it comes to mouth damage with barbed hooks it tends to be a case of inexperience of removing barbed hooks or doing it by brute force. Also when I say barbed hook I mean micro barbed, off the top of my head I can not think of any manufacturer in the uk that still make full barbed hooks.
@milky5432
@milky5432 7 лет назад
surely the only difference a barb makes is weather the hook can come out or not the rest is still the same so it can still rotate and move it just cant release from slack? Im not swearing to anything just asking
