It's time to let go of the bottle and hit the bar! Well, Shampoo Bars anyway. Another LUSH invention, (and one that's solid and naked), they're versatile, easy to use and travel with, and we have one for just about every hair and scalp need. Join Leigh in the shower as she shares her knowledge and tips for Solid Shampoo Bars.

I bought a shampoo bar recently. Having silver hair my hair tends to be dry and rather frizzy. But after using Jason and the Argan Oil solid shampoo bar, my hair felt like it didn't even need conditioner, ever since I've used it my hair has felt beautifully soft, looked 100x more shiny and just looked better! I 100% recommend these bars!!

That’s the only shampoo that I find as actually helped my hair! It’s not as dry, but still frizzy. I always say it’s frizzy due to the humidity of Louisiana

pretty sure lush didnt INVENT shampoo bars. my mom was in living in india in the 70s using shampoo bars. Lush may have marketed them and made them popular but they sure as fuck didnt invent them lol

I have to say that these shampoo bars literally changed my life. I used to be really down about my hair. It's long and curly and basically unmanageable. It only seemed to be kind of ok in exactly between soft and hard water but anything on either end of the spectrum would send my hair into a tacky mess that I couldn't fix. After using this (I have the orange one) the first time I noticed a huge difference. My hair is soft, the tackiness was gone and I could actually put it up without it looking scary. Thanks Lush!

I have a metal tin for mine too, and I have a devil of a time opening the darn things, so I leave the lid on top of the tin, but cracked open. This allows the water to evaporate before too much damage is done to the bar. It also helps if you're careful about where in the shower you store it--make sure it's in a place that doesn't get too much random splash. When you're done with the shower, use the lid to drain the excess water out of the bottom, and then leave the tin cracked for next time.

Our formulas are developed with emphasis on scalp care as well as the strands, with thoughtful care to many details in the process. Shampoo in solid form is an olden idea, not our own. But what are available as LUSH Solid Shampoo Bars are special and creative approaches to hair care, each one a specialized formula. It's great other companies also make solid shampoos--this is an innovation (or back-to-basics, really) that saves plastic and the need for synthetic preservatives. Bravo to that!

I used to use Dove bar soap as shampoo when I ran out of regular shampoo. Worked fine. So yeah, totally not a new concept.

I've struggled with my hair and gave up on it. I have a lot of hair but it thin so it tangles easily. I've always thought more conditioner does the trick but it never did. I've tried low end and high end shampoos and conditioners. I decided to give the Seanik shampoo bar a try with no conditioner just on its own. My hair has never looked like it does now. It looks bouncy and it looks like healthy hair should. I am slowly replacing all my beauty products into Lush products. Thank you Lush for pretty much existing.

What fun research! Some formulas from the labs of LUSH Co-Founder and Product Inventor Mo Constantine do pre-date 1985; but of the current range, all of them were introduced as LUSH Products much later than that cut-off date. Squeaky Green was most recent addition in the fall of 2007.

Dirty is a strong-hold styling cream. It will be more conditioning for you considering dryness is an option, and offer a lot of holding power for curls, in particular, but a little goes a long way--so use sparingly. Another popular styling option is R&B--which is a deeply hydrating mix of oatmilk, avocado butter and olive oil among many other nourishing conditioning ingredients (that smell divine). It doesn't have a hold to it, like Dirty, but does "revive" and "balance" hair--hence R&B.

Only Godiva has particles of solid conditioner inside of it--so it's a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioning bar. But the others are shampoo only, so if you have longer hair or like the feeling of conditioner, you'll want to use a separate product to condition. Jungle and Big are two solid conditioners, if you like the ease and how compact the solid products are, otherwise any of the liquid conditioners work well, depending on your hair's specific needs.

Hey, Pele- Trichomania or Godiva are going to be really conditioning lathers as you wash- good for the dryness. When your scalp acts up, try alternating Soak and Float into your routine, too (great for sorting flakes!)...As for the gloss and a smoothing effect on your volume, give a conditioner like Retread a try--this will also moisturize a lot! A solid option for conditioner is Jungle--you could really coat it on, which helps with controlling volume and will also nourish dry strands.

I tried these a few months ago in my transition to zero waste. And they were so so harsh! Omg they dried out my hair so severely. I looked at the ingredients and found that they use sulfates are their main lathering agent, which strips the hair. It stripped my hair so much that by the next day my hair was already oily. I spent 6 months training my scalp so that I could wash my hair once per week. And runied it all in one fell swoop

Hey Lush! I bought Soak and Float and it works so well!! The smell...well, it's not the best, but you geniuses made your fresh face mask pots the same size as the bar! After using the bar, I can throw it in the pot and not worry about my bathroom smelling like campfire! Super clever!!

I was told in the shop not to run the shampoo bar through my hair but have found that by just lathering my hands with it then putting it in my hair that I need to do one wash with the shampoo bar and another with a liquid shampoo. *sign*, I shall now put it through my actual hair from now on.

On my first visit to LUSH, I got the Honey I Washed My Hair shampoo bar. I actually went to LUSH just to get the shampoo bar! (I of course got more than just that of course!) I recommend them! They have a ton of great scents & are worth the money. I was told that the bars last 60-80 washes which is pretty good for a tiny bar like that! If you do get one, I recommend you also get the tin. It is great for traveling & just to make sure your bar doesn't get dirty. (The tin is only $4!) Most of the shampoo bars are only $10! They're great!

You can also pat them off with a towel to help it dry faster. I just use one of those clear plastic tubs that I got my face cleanser in to store mine. It's thin so it's easier to tip the bar on it's side. I also make sure to drain out any water that could be left after I use it.

Hi, Sagnik- There are multiple LUSH shampoo options for dry hair, actually. We choose natural hydrating ingredients like seaweed, olive oil, eggs and cocoa butter to give some of our shampoo bases extra nourishing material for dry hair. A few you might try are Curly Wurly or Rehab, or for Solid Shampoos, Trichomania and Godiva also offer excellent conditioning powers. Also try a LUSH Hair Treatment, as well, which are like hydrating masks for the hair. Check those out, and good luck!

Honestly I’ve had mine for about seven months now and use it almost exclusively... like at least 3 or 4 times a week and I still have about a quarter of it left so it lasts waaaay longer than they say 🤷‍♀️ I’m over a hundred washes now and still have probably a couple dozen to go?

If you are looking for a Shampoo Bar specifically, try Godiva or Karma Komba, but if you are open to other LUSH suggestions--your hair self-description sounds perfect for Curly Wurly or Cynthia Sylvia Stout. (For Conditioner, Jungle Solid Conditioner, or Retread might be good picks, too--and R&B for styling and shine!) Each of these suggestions have mixes of very conditioning, hair-loving ingredients for soft, happy, manageable hair.

LUSH Hair Treatments are intended to be used like a face mask, except on the hair. They are full of fresh and active material to coat onto dry hair, and let sit for 20-30 minutes. After that amount of time, hair has soaked up all of the moisture, and is ready to be shampoo'ed out. People can use them whenever really needed, or every week or two if hair is really in dry, damaged condition. One to try for very dry hair is called H'Suan Wen Hua, which also has a Quick Tips video.

Our Shampoo Bars are a very concentrated alternative to liquid shampoo, and they foam up quite a bit! Two or three swipes is plenty, and you’ll be surprised at how much lather you’ll get!

There is nothing more deflating than hopping in for a quick shower, grabbin' that bottle of shampoo and..... it's empty. OH THAT'S RIGHT! Yesterday, you thought, oh, I'll just pick some up after work, no big. Now, It's a big. A big big. To have a shampoo bar that lasts so long would rid you of this pesky problem, yes? I have never used a solid bar though. Do They lather? Do they keep your hair with that lovely scent you adore all day? Do they really work, scalp to tip? I want details, Lush! Details, I tell you! lol, thanks :)

Yes, they lather. In fact, I find them easier to use than liquid shampoo! The scent doesn't last all day (at least not with the cinnamon clove bar that was demoed in this video), but it smells divine in the shower.

Sorry to hear about your allergy, EccentricPaw. You should look for "Sodium Hydroxide" in anything lathering, sometime's lye is labeled that way. Shampoo Bars don't have that in particular as their lathering agent, but they do contain high concentrations of other lathering agents (that's what makes them so long-lasting). Try a patch away from your scalp perhaps, before using any if you are worried about sensitivity.

We'd love to help! All you'll have to do is wet your hair, and then rub the bar all over your hair until it creates a lather. You don't need to use a lot because all of our shampoo bars lather really well!

Hmm. While New's fiesty blend of peppermint, cinnamon and other spices are intended to stimulate the scalp's blood flow, longer hair's ends might not be getting the attention they need. We're assuming you're conditioning from the ears down? If not, that's a start--as well as perhaps adding in a LUSH Hair Treatment like H'Suan Wen Hua every week or two to boost hair's moisture. Another shampoo you could also try is Rehab, with scalp toners (like New) but tons of conditioning ingredients, too.

Luckily, there are probably a few shampoo bars that you’d like. Look for essential oils like Rosemary, Lavender, Juniper or Elemi to help balance your scalp oils. Jumping Juniper is a great option, as is Squeaky Green or Ultimate Shine. Ultimate Shine also boasts ylang ylang oil, which will make the hair smooth and shiny. Give one (or a couple) a shot, and let us know what you think!

I really appreciate these because it's nice to get to know the products a bit more, however I wish they were a bit more descriptive... I mean some of these videos do tell you some info about the products, but a lot of the time it feels like you're describing the same product over and over again.. I wish there was a bit more of "this is good if you have ____ skin/hair" or "this product especially aids with ____" and stuff like that, you know?

Loving the shampoo bar that I just got. Awesome experience with my first LUSH product. But I had problems getting my bar out from the tin cuz it got wet and stuck to it. Some say to pat it dry, but that sounds silly when you are still showering. what do you suggest? Also, wondering what conditioner I should be using with these shampoo bars?

If you would like to try something from Lush, their Godiva shampoo bar is a nice one with dry hair. But of course for a more precise suggestion, always go to your local Lush shop, they have really friendly and helpful staff there~

third time using a shampoo bar. i'm using the one with seaweed and salt in it, they told me that it is a solid alternative to Big. Here in italy it's called Atlantide. first use was awesome, shiny, volumized hair but now my hair became dry and opaque. could i be using too much of it? or do i have to alternate this shampoo with another one?

I'm okay with the sulfate, I love the lather. But so many people disagree, I don't think it would be hard to add one sulfate free shampoo bar into the mix. If anything it'd be a really good business decision. (;

if you are sensitive to sulfates, use shampoos like Aveeno. However, if you aren't, there's no need. You can use Lush shampoos even with sulfate. Sulfates aren't intrinsically harmful.

To the people who think Lush didn’t invent anything, Well they invented a lot of things. Just to name a few, ‘Fun’ and ‘Shower Jellies’. Fun is a product like a shower jell, but it’s like a play-dough you can wash yourself. You can make different things in the shower, if you’re finished playing, you can just lather it up and wash your body. Shower Jellies are simply a shower jell in a jello formula. You can use the whole thing and just lather it up on your body, lather it up in your hands, or break a piece and lather it up in your loofah.

Bummer! Can you air it between uses? We've found standing the Shampoo Bar up on its side in the tin, or on the tin lid, and letting it breathe between uses prolongs the use. Keeping them out of the shower, or at least away from moisture, is the best way to maximize them. Stash them on a window sill, or soap dish with drainage, if that's easy. Though handy for storing once they are dry, tins can trap moisture. If other viewers have clever solutions, please share!

Wow, It's really smart to bring this instead of liquid shampoo so theres no chance of spills and you are actually able to take it with you on the airplane. I can't wash my hair by myself yet since it's really long and not very thin but soon I will be able too and I will try a shampoo bar from lush. My mom washes my hair btw and I'm 12 and I pick my one shampoo and conditioner though. I was wondering if theres a conditioner fir your hair too from lush?

no, lash didn't "invent" the bar shampoo. In my country (Romania) since centuries we've been using bar shampoo (you could use it as a great clothes detergent or body soap) and I'm sure a lot of other civilisations used to do that...i don't want to be mean, but you know. if you mean by "invent" what I think you mean, then you're wrong

Emma Joy That's how we do ours too and they dry immediately after use. I actually use the little paper cups that are often used in bathrooms. I just turn the cup upside down and gently place the bar on it....

Naomi Muller I use a soap dish and leave it out of the tub in the back of the toilet or when I had it on the divider wall. I figured out that when someone else was in the shower they were wetting my bar and it was going faster.

My husband using lush shampoo bar too for almost 6 months, he's the reason why I started to make my own shampoo bar because I read the ingredients that lush product had SLS the ingredients I dreaded, I am sorry Guys but I don't use lush just my husband. He likes my shampoo bar I used hemp, jojoba, argan, coconut, olive oil, Palm, rice bran, cocoa butter. It's fab

I got mine in today and I'm super excited! One question - I'm used to using a specific shampoo/conditioner to restore my hair, cana I use these (or at least the conditioner) in conjunction with shampoo bars? Or would it be counterproductive to use it alongside liquid conditioners?

I had the blue one with seaweed in it and I loved it!!! ...until it turned clear, the coloring turned my water I rinsed out of my hair blue and the seaweed would get super soggy and not that attractive. What went wrong?!?

I'm going on a hike for about 30 days and am thinking about bringing a shampoo and conditioner bar instead of travel sized bottle products which I will need to replace. What would you suggest for a long hike, and how long do they usually last for (about how many washes?) I have medium length hair that gets oily easily and tangled.

Autumn Kervella Hi Autumn, solid shampoos and conditioners travel so well! It sounds like Karma Komba or Jumping Juniper would both work well for you, and Big solid conditioner would pair nicely with either of them. Shampoo bars are equivalent to 3 standard shampoo bottles, so they last really long!

Hey lush i am using godiva shampoo bar and LOVE the scent and im looking for a liquid conditioner for curly hair. Ive tried retread and it doesnt really work for me, maybe american cream or veganese or happy happy joy joy! Thank you!!

We think Happy Happy Joy Joy would be a great fit! The almond milk and jojoba oil in this conditioner is wonderful for adding hydrating without weighing the hair down!

My biggest wish for a shampoo bar is for it to be sulfate free. Is there any shampoo bar on the market that is truly sulfate free? If so, please let me know! I would love to use less packaging but I do not want to put the health of my hair at risk.

Soak N Float! the cade oil in there would be great for your scalp. One of the bottled shampoos called Rehab would work really well too!

You mean rehab? Yes, but I would use it since it's still got the soothing qualities to it, the mints in it might feel nice on a sore head.

I am a university student researching to write an assignment on the environmental/ethical advantages of your products but i need to write about something designed and manufactured AFTER 1985.So would you be able to tell me when Your shampoo bars were introduced. If it was before 1985 could you tell me when any specific Shampoo bar was made or at least introduced in your stores like Seanik Squeaky Green or New? I just got the Braziliant bar, used it once. I live in college dorms so I placed it in the soap "dish" in my shower caddy (it has ridges and holes for proper draining). When I used the shampoo bar the second time, it stuck to the soap dish and broke/melted. How can I avoid this in the future? It seems impossible to fully dry the bar after using.

***** I'm so sorry to hear this, Janessa! If your shampoo bar is being stored in the washroom, the humidity can affect the bar in this way - this is especially the case in shared washrooms that tend to get more traffic. If you're not able to allow the bar to air dry, patting it dry with a towel or tissue goes a long way in reducing excess moisture retained by the bar. Hope this is helpful!

Are shampoo bars a one-step hair fix, or is a conditioner follow up recommended? Does it depend on the specific bar?

Rhiwan It depends on the bar, as well as your hair. Some of our shampoo bars, such as Godiva and Copperhead, contain cocoa butter, which may add enough moisture for some to easily go without conditioner. Those with especially dry hair may opt for conditioner in addition to a more moisturizing shampoo bar!

I have the New shampoo bar and it works great for me. But even though I let it sit out of the shower, it remains gooey and sticky. It sticks to the container i keep it in. Because it's gooey, it doesn't lather as well. Any tips?
