This is a really fantastic father-son project to teach some basic carpentry and electronic skills, and have fun playing classic arcade games at the same time.

first time i've seen the smoked plexi glass in a home build, has that wow factor. looks just like a professional cabinet. kudos

Thanks. I was similarly surprise out how effectively it hides all those minor distractions from behind the glass while letting the monitor shine right through; highly recommended.

@@ModestMaker I'm going to use a smoked plexi in my home build. Would like to check with you, what thickness did you use? Thanks!

This was great. I was looking for a project that my son and me could do together and this is it. Thank you so much for taking the time to upload this video, it will be a big help. You also did a great job.

Thanks - sorry for not replying sooner, and yes- nice memories and a great addition to the living room. Hope yours turned out okay!

A 25" CRT would really make this cab pop, we have an advantage in Europe in the form of the SCART socket which auto switches the monitor power when it receives a signal and HDMI to SCART converters are really cheap. You look like you had some really good fun building this together, I too have built a games cab which is an Electrocoin cab clone with a slightly larger control panel which I recently converted from Rpi to X86 running Bigbox so I could have PSP and modern arcade games running on the Parrot emulator, I really want to build an Astro City cab though, they are IMO the ultimate design in arcade cabs.

Still enjoying this cabinet - great addition to our living space. Thanks for your thoughts-- thinking about building another one soon.

LuSID was one of the cleanest, best upright designs...loved seeing your kids experiencing our childhood addiction that devoured weeks of lawncutting quarters. (My dad, just shaking his head at me as I shoveled quarter after quarter in Defender or Space Duel or Asteroids.) I wondered if you have put a 27 or 32" screen in it since to do away with the need to rotate the screen ? Thanks for the detailed build...especially showing the way to save a whole sheet of plywood!

Thanks for that throwback to my own youth. For me, it was walking to “The Broadway” department store to play the Atari or Intellivision demo units, and saving my quarters to play the real deal on the weekends. As a kid, I always dreamt of having my own arcade- then MAME came along. My build currently runs Millipede 90% of the time at least three times a week, so no real need to replace the monitor- it’s more fun than I can handle just the way it is 😊.

very good idea to use smoked acrylic sheet. It gives it a very seamless look. I'm building a bartop arcade and your build, especially around the monitor + acrylic just gave me a eureka moment. Cheers!

Nice - glad it helped. I was concerned about using the smoked plexiglass since it might cut down on visibility, but it doesn't impact play at all.

Eventually I did not buy a smokey plexiglass for the screen, opting instead to make a bezel with some game art. Just left with the side art and to cut an mdf to cover the rear. Hell lot of fun doing this project. :) i.ibb.co/w0184M3/Barcade.jpg

I've been planning my own arcade cabinet build for some time now, and even having to buy some extra bits and tools I estimate my project only costing around $300
@ModestMaker
@ModestMaker 4 года назад
That's great! Would love to see your project. This project can definitely be done at a lower cost. Since this was a father-son heirloom kind of deal, I decided to spare no expense.
@Alt3R

@@ModestMaker Of course :) That's totally fair, if I had a little more in my budget I would love to add some extra flare. I just wanted it out there that you could definitely make a full size cabinet for cheaper if needs be 👍

Been a while so I just measured it - 1/8 inch, 57% www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/acrylic_sheets_transparent_colors/519

$1700 seems like a lot of money. Did you go with a super high end monitor etc?
@ModestMaker
@ModestMaker 5 лет назад
Agreed! To clarify, the $1,700 actually includes purchase of all the tools and bits including the router and jigsaw. If you have all the tools, the costs go way down. The spreadsheet I mentioned has all the costs itemized down to every last screw and bracket- you can download it from www.biod101.com/arduino/Part3.html (see "Spreadsheet for LuSiD cabinet"). The monitor was relatively cheap since I purchased it used on eBay, but I spared no expense on the rest of the parts-- went with quality where I could find it.
