Learn how to use a lux meter to adjust your grow light height for maximum PAR: • How to setup your grow...
I test four cheap Lux meters from Amazon to see if they can be used to measure PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) so you can use them to optimise your grow light setup. The measurements are compared to the benchmark quantum sensor for measuring PAR from Apogee which costs about $500. The results are surprisingly accurate.
The Lux meters were tested with the two most common spectrum in LED grow lights sold in the last few years, a 3500K or neutral white LED and a White LED with added red LEDs. Other grow light spectrum were not tested and thus hack will not work for HID or 'Blurple' led grow lights (with blue and red diodes only).
Each Lux meter reading was graphed against the benchmark quantum sensor readings. On the top of each chart is the factor to apply for each Lux meter to convert the lux readout to PAR in µmols/m²/sec.
For example if you are using the UNI-T lux meter and you have a white and red LED grow light you multiply the LUX readout by 0.017 for the PAR equivalent.
Lux meter specs:

Mastech MS6612 Lux 1 to 200000

Hi Shane thanks for the video! But I’m not familiar with all the technology and the devices used to find PAR output. I recently bought the AP-881E and I’m tryin to understand how to operate the device. I simply turn it on but there is so many numbers a and stuff on the screen and I’m not sure if I need to select one of the options/buttons on the touchscreen/keyboard. So basically all I’m asking is how do find the right setting do I need to set it in a certain mode? or is it ready to go as soon as I turn on the power? And how do I covert the number it’s readin into PAR so I can see what kind of heights I need to hang my lights above my canopy. I’m sorry I’m not familiar with those gadgets and tech so bare with me please I really want to understand this cuz it’s can help my grow! Thanks for your time and knowledge!

Thanks! Realizing that there is any common denomination whatsoever means I don't have to buy a par meter. I wouldn't anyways, it's not my first rodeo. Everyone fails the first year, too much water first run, too many nutrients for the second, etc.. After that, if you don't have lighting figured out? Go outside or keep buying everything that sellers sell.
@Industrious420
@Industrious420 2 года назад
I would respectfully disagree. Not everyone fails their first attempt(s).
@yesicanu
@yesicanu 2 года назад
@@Industrious420 Let's define failure. Failure imo is any yield less than the maximum the light can produce. A lot of growers, I'm not including you, get bud and they think they're winning. Are the colas 18", dense, with one in every trellis hole? Those are some of the things I look for in not failing.

Lux meter apps for android are flawed in my opinion. The sensor range on Android phones is too variable and the apps are not calibrated for each type of phone. The iPhone lux and PAR apps are more reliable because the sensors are the same.

Hi migro. In the secomd chart the lux meter Uni -T UT383 need multiply for 0,017 for ppfd. But the blue line (par meter line) and the purple line (Uni -T UT383 Lux meter line) are both exactly in the same place. And in the first chart the blue line (par meter) and the purple line (Uni -T UT383 Lux meter) are more separate than the second chart and the multiply number is (0,014) lower than the second chart where the blue and purple lines are in the same place. Is that a mistake???? Please tell me something because i cannot understand why. and make me be confused. Thanks a lot.
@Battlem0nk
@Battlem0nk 2 года назад
My interpretation is the purple line is the values given by a real expensive PAR meter in lux. The blue line is a UT383 which is very close to the PAR meter. Multiplying by 0,017 is not a error correction multiple between the lines, but a conversion factor to convert lux to ppfd. Even if the blue & purple line are exactly the same you still need to multiply by something.
