LUXURY HANDBAGS THAT DONT HOLD VALUE
- DROP DOWN FOR MORE -
Im always asked if a bag is worth the price, so in this video i thought id go full into detail of the luxury and designer handbags that do and don’t hold their value. I personally think brands like Burberry, Chloe and Givenchy don’t hold their value as well as Chanel and Hermes. In this video i explain what helps a bag holds its value, how to find out the real value of a designer bag and also how to avoid over paying for a luxury handbag that won’t hold its value long term. Hope its informative and helpful for your next shopping venture!

Hey guys, this video is about the financial value in a luxury bag, not how much you will use or love an item. I know that the value of an item also comes with how much you use it, but this video is really to assist others like myself who financially need to think about purchases like a designer handbag. I am not a bag collector, so for me the presale value of something I buy is important as I do not collect bags - if I don’t use it after a year, I will sell it on. If you are a handbag collector it might not matter as much to you if you can sell it on or not. Hope that explains my thought process on talking mainly about the financial aspect of buying a bag. Eva xx

such an interesting topic! the 'will it hold any value' question when I'm buying anything expensive is definitely a huge factor in deciding!

Hi Eva, I agree with what you're saying, however, I think people should buy bags because they'll love and use them. As I commented in a previous video, I had my bag collection stolen when I got burgled a few months ago and realised if I had invested that money in the bank it would still have been there. Prior to that I was beginning to minimise and only wanting to keep the bags I love and use and had sold a few but unfortunately had yet to sell 3 of my 5 chanel bags. I realised out of the 18 or so bags stolen, I only really miss my reissue 226 and lady Dior which are the two that don't hold their value but are amazing to use. I have since repurchased the pochette Metis and neverfull , a Fendi peekaboo mini and a vintage Gucci bucket bag. I am saving up to buy the lady Dior and reissue 226 which I don't mind buying new as I love them so much. The Fendi peekaboo mini I bought (same as Mel Soldera's from luxury next season) was a huge mistake as it's not me and I'm selling it new but so far finding it really doesn't hold its value. I think I got swayed by RU-vid on that one and wished I'd bought the Dior instead. Oh well I guess you live and learn. Have a lovely day. xoxo

Ruby Twenty28 did you not have your bags insured? With something so high value it’s always best to insure so in cases like this they would be replaced
@nadiabennett4652
@nadiabennett4652 6 лет назад
Malibu Stacey some home insurance doesn’t cover designer bags, so it’s not always easy to insure them. Insurance companies are heavy on receipts and for gifted items, this is sometimes problematic. Also the sentimental value a vintage piece handed down may have, will never amount to its value, but yeah, I guess if the right company is found to insure them, it is a good thing to consider.
@rubytwenty2833

Malibu Stacey hi yes we were insured but the insurance company been been a nightmare so far so I’m very upset about it all and think it’s not worth having so many valuables in the house anymore.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. It happened to me too back in 2013. Fortunately, we had renters' insurance with Nationwide. But, they wouldn't give us 100% of what I paid because they didnt think the bags were still as valuable. :\

The Chanel vintage Diana has definitely gone up in price. A small is worth about $3000+ and a medium $3500+ in the pre-loved market. I’ve seen it for less than that but at a very worn and torn condition. It’s such a beautiful bag - prettier than the classic in my opinion
@Karen.c.h

I think you’re right but if you’re are investing in a handbag “that you want to keep for life or a really long time” the value is not in resell price. (I think it’s fine to sell bags you are not using why should it just sit there?) The value in a designer bag for me, personally, is cost per use as well as the pleasure I get from a bag. My advice would be buy fewer bag, buy what only makes your heart turn cartwheels while still fitting into your life and don’t make impulse purchases. I do believe that classic bags will fit all stages of your life better than trendy things such as you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge.

Yeh there are many parts to warrant an investment purchase, this video was mainly about the financial money side of cost of a bag but I agree cost per wear is good too - sometimes we don’t know if that will work out though till we’ve bought and tried the item :)

I think the key point in "resale value" is brand and status recognition. As you see Chanel classic with CC buckle and the original classic same bag same price but because it doesn't have the CC it's not easily recognized as a "Chanel" bag except to other handbag enthusiasts. Another point look at Loewe a bag that has lower average consumer "status" you get less money. Speaks nothing to the quality, or status within the house. I've have purchased an epi leather speedy for much less money than I see logo canvas beat up bag being sold for. Also for the most part most people really don't know how to sell their bag properly and end up taking more of a loss.

I fricking love you Eva but there are so many videos lately on this. It kinda takes the fun out of getting to a level where you're financially secure and can buy a bag you love and think of it as a piece of art. I already see waaay too many Hermes, Chanel and LV because of their "holding value" and it's getting kinda boring. There are so many amazing bags by Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Chloe, Prada, YSL, etc. Don't get me wrong, I too have a Chanel Classic flap but honestly I didn't buy it because I can sell it for more than purchased. Rather it's just a fabulous bag that fits my lifestyle. I am really enjoying the resurgence in Gucci and can't wait to buy my first Dior this year. Great video for those who think of bags as investments but if not, go for the bag that makes you super excited and giddy to use.

Sadly resale is driving designer brand increases on a regular basis. I see many older bags selling at nearly new prices, which validates that the designers can in fact increase prices with no loss of sales. Not to mention those that make a business out of reselling... free enterprise is driving the prices upward. Until we stop buying new pieces they will continue to price escalate. It just so depressing, especially if you love handbags...

Hi Eva, I’m glad you made a video on this topic. I’ve been looking at reissues on preloved sites and they are either in terrible condition or missing something important like the authenticity card. I think that this is part of the reason why classic flaps hold their value better. They tend to be in leathers that hold their shape better. aged calfskin on reissues may be carefree in terms of scratching but can lose their beautiful envelope structure and sag (and I don’t mean the rounded base but from everywhere else).The classics are also released in more wearable colours compared to some of the metallic/glazed calfskins that came out between 2005-2010. Personally, for me an investment bag is a bag that will never go out of style and something that I can pick up after not wearing it for a while and still find that it’s relevant. This is one of the many reasons why I still love the reissue despite its abysmal resale value.
@EvaInTheCity

I get the point of the video, but I seriously think anyone who uses the term "investment" for a designer good should volunteer for a flogging if they don't have real investments such as: -2-4 month emergency fund -401k/retirement -stocks -property I see this being said a lot and I think some people are kidding themselves.
@EvaInTheCity
@EvaInTheCity 6 лет назад
I think you’re assuming people don’t have that just cos they want to spend their money wisely on something else. This video doesn’t need to be taken so seriously, I’m not talking about life investments in it. It’s literally just to help people with making a shopping decision on an item that is a luxury to most...
@Karen.c.h
@Karen.c.h 6 лет назад
Sarah Smith I believe we should consider value for money and not “investment” I understand Eva’s advice, it’s sound, but I see way too many women trying to rationalize a luxury bag purchase as an investment. “Luxury: an inessential , desirable item which is expensive or difficult to obtain.”
@EvaInTheCity

"Investment " as in, it is so expensive it's an investment. I don't think it's equated to a mutual fund or real estate. At least, i hope so. Because to think of a handbag the same way as a retirement fund is ludicrous and laughable.🙄

I own several high end designer handbags, new or preloved. I adore perfect craftmanship and the way good bags are aging. For me it is about personal style and life, not about planning an investment or retailing. Thank you for your interesting video.

Resale value is the last thing I think of when I buy a bag. I want to love and use my bags, and I do. I have been collecting since 2006 and I am very happy with everything I've purchased. I do have fairly classic taste, but I haven't sold a single bag and still reach for my 2006 purchases on rotation (Chanel, YSL, Mulberry, Chloe). It is more important that a bag fits my body and style than that it gets me kudos with other people. And then you can't go wrong with choice.
@EvaInTheCity
@EvaInTheCity 6 лет назад
Yeh as I’ve said in comments below, the value of an item working for your life is important too. This video isn’t really about that, it’s more around the financial side which I think could help people shopping their first luxury item or for people like me who need to financially think through a purchase. Also I’m not a handbag collector so if I don’t use a bag for a while I’d sell it, so for me resale value is important. For collectors it doesn’t matter as much I don’t think xx

Even with price increases of Lux lines such as Chanel, Hermes, and LV when you go to sell you have to take into consideration any fees that PayPal or Ebay or any consignment shop will take off the top as well. If concerned about investment I feel you won't truly enjoy a bag, because you'll be too concerned about it all the time. I go for what Iike in any of those lines as well as ones that nobody ever mentions on RU-vid such as Versace. I've gone on a day trip to the country. Went to a restaurant and saw 3 Speedy's and 2 Neverfulls. Found it to be rather funny everyone cloned with the same bags.

Hey Eva, I am new to owning luxury leather goods and have recently bought a Chanel from the boutique in Nemain Marcus in the U.S. The bag isn't exactly a classic flap but is a flap close with logo CC as well as Chevron leather print, it retailed for 3,700 before tax. I was very disappointed to see increase in classic flap of the same size being 5,600 before tax. The lady that helped me out mentioned that it was a good deal for a Chanel bag because of the inflation and also mentioned one thing that stood out being that it was one of the last purses made during Karl Lagerfeld's final year with Chanel. Would you say I may have made a mistake if for any reason I needed to try to resale my bag? :)

I think you are bang on with this. Personally, I think treating a bag as an investment defies logic - I buy to use . My Chloe is a £1,300 bag New but I picked it up for £300- no way was it worth £1,300, but I love it and am unlikely to sell as it's quite a classic shape . Chanel and LV don't really interest me and I prefer to invest in my kids and my mortgage lol. I have the same attitude to car buying - you lose a huge percentage of the price as you drive off the forecourt . I have previously bought new, as I needed the long guarantee period for my occupation and intended keeping them for a very long time , but now I (carefully ) buy second hand .I've had my Mini for 4 yrs now having bought it at a bargain £2,000 ,and will keep it hopefully for another few years yet.

Great video! I would add couple of things from my experience. I am from Canada and most luxury bags are cheaper to buy in Europe. I visit London at least once a year and I plan my purchases around that time. This way I get the bag 5-25% less (depending on brand) than what I would pay in Canada. This really helps at the time I want to sell a bag. So the “loss” is covered by the price difference so to speak. Also, I find brands that go on sale don’t hold their value. So with YSL or even Givenchy, in my opinion, it’s hard to recoup what you paid for.

If you really want to evaluate the return on investment on a designer bag, as with all investments you need to identify depreciation , which some have assessed at approximately $ 3-4 US dollars per wear/use. Factors: acquisition cost, cost per wear, price increases and most of all what the market says it is worth. Also, take in to consideration your enjoyment factor of using the bag , which i would think would be very individual...

Yet comparing with her own , the quality has decreased a bit since 2015. My personal opinion.

Loved the video Eva, although with regards to Gucci, I’ve been hearing this “Gucci is having a moment” theory from young youtubers, for 2 years now, it actually makes me cringe. It’s lovely that a younger generation has discovered Gucci, but Gucci is Gucci, it’s not New, or suddenly hot. Well to do People who know luxury always purchase Gucci, before the sudden new interest from millennials. Perhaps it’s millennials having a moment, something to think about.

Do you buy bags because you love the piece or do you buy a bag for the idea that it might be an investment? Material things that are only popular for a group of people (such as luxury bags) is not a proper investment. Pure gold is an investment, a house, a property etc. It's starting to become frustrating to watch your videos, because I feel like you make up your mind about everything between each video. I get it, sometimes we learn and form new opinions, but you seem incredibly contradictive. I clearly remember how you confessed your love for the Reissue and said you'd never get rid of it. Now it's a "meh, I want to sell this right now". Also I dont think you've avoided using the word "investment" repeatedly for every single item you talk about. If you shop and look at a bag and gauge the investment value of it, you are never going to be happy with that item. If you truly want to "invest" in something, the only true investment for a material consumerism piece would be to find something you love and feel good about yourself when you wear it. If it's a bag, lets say it gives you confidence and pulls up your outfit to the t. It doesn't have to be an item that breaks the bank or is so expensive that it's out of your range and you need to save up for it. If money is becoming an issue I suggest you look for other brands than Chanel, LV or YSL. There are so many new ones that cost the fraction of these bags and you get something that is durable and looks good for decades. That's "investment".

Of course you should buy something cos you love it, this video is for those who do wonder if something is worth the price and long term if they did sell it what they could get it for. It’s meant to be for people who do see these bags as investments and want some tips on shopping for them. Nothing more serious than that 👍🏻

Basically a demographic in which these items where not intended for in the first place.

I have found that life is far more enjoyable when one doesn’t judge others for their own choices in life... would really recommend trying that out 👍🏻
