Today I am discussing the downturn of luxury, if luxury is dead, and ranting about my issues with several brands including Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and more! After yelling at my camera for an hour and a half, I've edited this video to under 30 minutes to share my experience with faulty luxury products, luxury warranty and aftercare services, and in store experiences.
I am discussing which brands I feel still are the best in luxury and which brands I will no longer buy from. Let me know your thoughts below and if this video interests you check out some other similar videos from these creators:

Tarnishing on the trunks is to be expected because it’s a heritage piece. It’s solid brass, not coated brass like the bags. It’s not supposed to stay shiny. If that gives you peace of mind!

Holes in the middle of a fabric item indicate moths. Moths are insidious - you won’t see them and unless the item is inside the cedar chest, it’s still susceptible. There’s really nothing anyone can do to restore the fabric once there’s a hole. You can only darn it. Also H will never give free cosmetics, but they’ll give free samples. About names - social media will have a different name for bags than what the brand uses. For example, the Chanel Kelly bag is actually called the Chanel Nano shopping bag.
@accountingforluxury
@accountingforluxury Месяц назад
I had really thought they’d darn the holes. I’m currently looking into a reputable place to have this done. I get the social media thing on names because we do that, but it’s when brands name like 10 bags the same thing that I get annoyed 😂

Preach, Victoria! Before I retired, my specialty was customer service (retail, education, call centers, surveying and interviewing for a university study on aging) so I know the importance of taking care of customers. It burns my hide when I get less than competent customer care in person or over the phone. If your business is dependent upon people buying your products or service, then it should be a no-brainer. I really enjoyed this video and your take on the subject. You should give a master class, lol.

For clarity, the Dior handbag that is at the centre of the current polemics is the Dior Book Tote, which is made from canvas, and has always been an overpriced and overexposed product. I had the opportunity to watch craftrsmen create a leather Dior handbag from beginning to end, and the quality of the material and the quality of the artisanship was impressive,. Watching the process did, as you said, help to understand the reasoning behind the price tag. But there is a limit to that as well. I once asked why the canvas tote bags were so expensive in comparison to their leather, handstitched counterparts, and the reply was that the canvas itself was made in a special way using special threards for the embroidery, etc. However, the embroidery on the canvas tote bags were not made by hand but by machinery. So, while it is fair to seek justice and transparency. and make people accountable, one product does not the rest of the product line make. Having said all that, true Luxury for me has nothing to do with brands, but with the quality of the material and craftsmanship.
@accountingforluxury
@accountingforluxury Месяц назад
For liability purposes I wanted to minimize any details or opinions on this that I currently share. It has dimmed my love of my vintage lady Dior that I adore, but I want to see more before I buy more. Regardless of the alleged allegations I’ve always felt the book tote was over priced so no risk of me buying that bag ever 😂

I will add one more thing because it plagues my wool and cashmere pieces - I have never seen a moth in my house ever yet my sweaters were coming up with holes. I have however seen silverfish in my house which as it turns out also eat these fabrics and probably caused the holes. Might be another culprit 🤷🏻‍♀️ BUT that said, Hermes should have just replaced the blanket and been kinder about the whole thing.

Those companies should stand by their products. The items cost to much to have flaws. They make enough profits to replace your pieces and have a proper quality assurance department. Some brands that don’t charge as much for their products have better return or repair services.

While some quality issues can indeed be addressed, it's important to recognize that not all repairs should be expected to be free. For instance, if a necklace clasp breaks due to normal wear and tear, it may not be reasonable to expect a complimentary repair. Similarly, admitting that you broke your sunglasses suggests that the responsibility lies with you, and thus, the company is not obligated to fix them at no cost. It appears that you are expecting the company to offer free repairs for all issues, which isn't a sustainable business practice. Companies have to pay for labor and parts to repair items, and offering unlimited free repairs isn’t feasible under the guise of good customer service. I find this perspective in the video quite disappointing. 😢😢

I agree, Luxury brands need to hold themselves at higher standards. What Balenciaga did was dumb, just the opposite of high standards. Dior, needs to match what they show us on their videos, with what actually happens in some of their workshops. I’m sure they are not alone in that category. Loro Piana had similar issues with underpaid workers in Peru. Hermes does not treat customers very nicely. If you are a new customer walking in, good luck! I haven’t had any issues with Chanel, Celine, Gucci or LV with either quality or the way a was treated at the store. I only had good experiences with those brands.

Celine I have wonderful experience as I do with most Watch stores (minus AP). Bvlgari I’ve had fantastic service in though I’ve never bought anything. Gucci is hit or miss with me. YSL in Nashville is great but my Hawaii and New York experiences weren’t as staff was rude. Tiffany in New York has always been top drawer but Nashville’s selection isn’t great. David Yurman is always fantastic. Valentino and Christian louboutin and Jimmy Choo is always great. Gucci and LV are hit or miss. Dior the staff are never overly educated imo. Prada same thing but I think a lot of that is down to bad product naming. Ferrari is top of my list now so check out next week’s video to see why 😉

I beg to differ here on one Luxury Brand in particular, and that is Dior. Have you ever set foot in a DIOR boutique? I’m only asking because I have only ever been in one in my life at is was in Atlanta and I’m from Arkansas, so it’s safe to say they “don’t know me!”. However, at the DIOR Boutique in Buckhead in Atlanta, I was treated like royalty!! This was in November 2023. They served me a light lunch with dessert because they knew I had just gotten off an airplane. I was served champagne and was helped and visited with by the entire staff and had not just one but two SAs assisting me. And this was way before the alleged scandal you spoke of. It was by far the BEST luxury shopping experience I have ever had, ever! And I’m no novice, my first luxury purchase was from the flagship Louis Vuitton store in Paris on the Champs Elysees in 1989 and have shopped luxury in most all the major luxury boutiques ever since. I personally have never understood the “Chanel vibe”, I guess “snobbery” appeals to some people and I’m just not one of them. So, unless you have “insider information” about their scandal? You might want to tour one of the factory’s of the major players and also you need to realize that Dior was not too long ago acquired by Louis Vuitton. But please NEVER throw shade on the real life human beings that provide the finest customer service on the planet!! Not cool especially if you have never been in a boutique for yourself!

I’ve been to multiple Dior boutiques and I’ve not been overly impressed. I’m glad you had a great experience. When it comes to the scandal, there are a lot of pieces of information we don’t have as consumers but the pieces we do have don’t have a good look. I’m not saying I will never buy from the brand (I love my vintage lady Dior) there are too many other pieces from brands that feel more luxurious to me currently.

I recently purchased some sunglasses from Coach's website and I totally f'ed up the address... wasn't paying attention, some info auto-populated incorrectly, the address was wrong and I didn't notice. They sent it and it was 'received' somewhere (don't know how as the address didn't exist). I called and they weren't able to replace the glasses as they were now out of stock but they did issue me a credit towards anything else I wanted. At no time did they insinuate that this was my error (it was) or make me feel less than. They went above and beyond and I will continue to shop from them.

Repair of an SLG was 40€. In Hermès I paid 2500€ for the repair of two bags... New dustbags were included in all repairs and everything was bought preloved and not new from store. I have only bought 2 bags new from the store. They are LV and one has quality issues. After a year the surface of the leather started coming off. They said it was normal wear and tear and would take no responsibility. If I had been a world famous RU-vidr they would have replaced it but for normal people like me they just fobbed me off. It was a bad experience and I will never buy an LV bag again. I bought most of my bags preloved and they are fairly old and the only one I am not particularly impressed with the quality of is the YSL Lou Camera Bag. It’s not bad but I expect better from a luxury brand. I also have a Gucci Marmont Camera Bag and the quality of the leather and construction of that one is far superior to the Lou. The Marmont feels like luxury as soon as I touch it, the Lou doesn’t. I will be keeping the Lou because I love the style and colour but I am very glad I didn’t pay anything close to retail price for it. Sorry, I know you love YSL but that has been my experience.

I’m so sorry you feel this way. Crappy Customer Service aside, that’s inexcusable, or dodgy stitching, I do think Companies should let people know what to expect with their product but I’m not sure SA’s are even aware half the time. Many luxury things need treating like a newborn 😂. Tarnishing of metals doesn’t mean it’s of low quality, it’s the nature of the metal when exposed to air and light. If you had a full silver dinner service you’d have to polish it a few times a year, like in stately homes of the past. Silver polishing is a dirty but necessary job if you want things to look pristine and it’s the same with brass. People would polish brass door hardware, the knocker and letterbox. The LV trunk will need regular polishing to maintain its shine if that finish is important to you. Or it needs to be electroplated which actually cheapens it, same with silver. Cashmere is notorious for attracting clothing moths and you are very unlikely to see them as it’s the larvae that eats the wool at night and leaves signs of their destruction. They love natural fibres. Little holes in T-shirts or sweaters that look like they’re caused by the car seatbelt rubbing or snagging in the washer. The tiniest dropped crumb that we can’t see, the tiniest spot of sweat, they will find. Cedar can definitely help but needs to be sanded every 12 weeks or so to release the fresh aroma the moths hate so much. I’ve lost several pairs of cashmere socks to the damn things 😢. I’m surprised they didn’t offer to fix the blanket though because I’m sure they could do that.

I knew the brass would tarnish but was shocked it came tarnished. Like you pointed out though the trunk hardware isn’t plated. There’s a Loewe tote I drool over, but no, not going there. Tiffany and LV are kind of done as I’ve purchased everything I was interested in, and yes, the quality issues with LV are insane. They raised their repair costs to encourage the purchase of a new one, and that’s not good either. David Yurman’s customer service is stellar as they tracked down a piece I wanted and had it sent from a store. I had one bag show up from a department store where it was so poorly packaged that the dust bag had color transfer from the trip. I was actually lucky the bag was still in the shipping box as the box was ripped on one side during transport--part of the issue might have been damage while in transit, but part of it was that the shipping box was not sufficient for the bag. All luxury bags should be double boxed to avoid possible damage during transport. Anyway, apparently sometimes a $65 mug is treated so much better than a luxury bag!

However… with the greatest respect, that is almost definitely moth damage 😬 and you are very unlikely to know that you have them until it’s too late. They’re small and devious and if I were you I’d make damn sure there are none in your home! If wool isn’t stored IN a cedar chest or with other active precautions you can have big trouble in a hurry. Now, it’s possible it came to you that way… but who knows at this point right? Of course this doesn’t excuse the other poor treatment you received, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that moth damage did you in there 😢

Yeah most people are saying it looked like moth damage but none of my other cashmere or wool pieces in the closet in this room had damage which is why I’m skeptical that there is only one piece with damage. I’m just so surprised nothing could be done in repairs such as darning the holes.

Why not spend 5800.00 on your teeth? Just asking.

I actually had multiple rounds of braces, retainers, pallet expanders and without removing more of my teeth there is nothing to be done. Believe me, thousands have been spent and my one tooth that’s pushed way behind in the front dies upset me but not enough to loose more teeth.

Oh I definitely don’t expect all repairs to be free, especially when it is my fault. I fully expected to pay for the DY repairs and I only emailed Sunski to buy a new pair myself because I wasn’t seeing my item on the website any longer. I was pointing out here how Sunski and Yurman go above and beyond with there customer service when I even told Sunski it was my fault and the Yurman pieces were worn so hard they got worn out. With Louis Vuitton, I was frustrated on the glazing issue because they don’t even offer repair options on it, it was just 300 and some odd dollars for a new strap when they have had lots of glazing issues with glazing melting in the past. With the trunk hardware, receiving it in the mail with tarnishing was very upsetting because while I knew it would tarnish overtime I didn’t expect to receive it that way. At the time I didn’t know that the brass used on the trunks is different from that used on bags which is why it tarnished so quickly. Id actually asked my SA when it came what they recommended for me to get to clean it myself and she said it shouldn’t already be tarnished, told her manager and the manager said “no no no it shouldn’t look like that. Bring it in and I’ll work on it.” With Hermes, no repair options were even given so I didn’t even have an option to pay to have it mended, which I would have paid for that if it had been offered. There has been a discussion in the comments on if this was the result of moths or not. Regardless of if it was moths, I’m looking into companies who can repair the blanket which I’ll obviously pay for. The difference for me is I expected to pay with Sunski and DY, but was met with customer service going above and beyond, raising my expectations. With LV and Hermes, I expected things to be reparable, most likely at a cost to me, but being no repair avenue in 2/3 and being told on 1/3 that the product shouldn’t do that I expected this storied brands to do more. I probably didn’t say it as well as I could have and am probably still not but it’s coming in saying 10% my fault and being treated like it’s 100% on them Vs this product seems less than I expected how can we fix it and being told it’s 100% on me. All of these happened within a year of each other so emotionally my brain was directly comparing them.
