Lviv (Ukrainian: Львів is the largest city in western Ukraine and the seventh-largest city in the country overall, with a population of 724,314 (2020 est.. Lviv is one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine.
Named in honour of Leo, the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia from 1272 to 1349, when it was conquered by King Casimir III the Great of Poland. From 1434, it was the regional capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship in the Kingdom of Poland. In 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, the city became the capital of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. What a beautiful city! We visited Lvov in about 2000, what a difference to see it now, how everything is renovated and kept up so well. My dream is to visit again and my prayer is that it will be possible soon.

Th buildings might look ok. But the place itself is ugly beyond words. My family are from the Ukraine. And Lvov here is an absolute hotbed of actual Nazism. (The most popular political parties). Hitler is worshipped here, yes in 2024.

I stayed in Lviv for a month, in 2021 - after living in Istanbul for 5 months. I arrived at the end of the summer, right before the weather turned grey & rainy ....and a few months before the Russian Invasion. My heart breaks for Ukraine, and especially Lviv, which was recently struck by a deadly missile. My impression of Lviv was that it was going in a Progressive direction, and Freedom was blooming there! Very Artistic...especially with Jazz, Classical and Alternative music - and the people in general were cautiously warm, and sincere. I hope to go back again when all this horrific, and senseless terror has been ERADICATED!

@armchairtraveler... Lviv was built by Poles. The city owes its beautiful city to Poland, not Ukraine. Lviv was stolen from Poland after the Second World War. Lviv is a royal Polish city. The city owes its monuments and architecture exclusively to Poles.

@@Ingame94 Conquered? Don't know much about history? Daniel built a stronghold and named it after his son. But the location of a medieval city was a specific organizational and legal process. This work was done by Casimir, who legally inherited* the city and the entire region. Moreover, it was Casimir who gave the city its characteristic nature. In the founding document for the city, the Polish king noted that all its inhabitants, both Poles and Ruthenians, Armenians, Jews and Tatars, have the right to maintain their own laws, religion and customs. In this way, he established the nature of this unique city that existed until 1945 when Stalin took it from Poland, made the city Soviet and carried out a population exchange, expelling most of the native inhabitants. *The relations of the Piast and Rurikids dynasty were exceptionally close by the standards of medieval Europe. Both houses were related to each other through numerous marriages.

The data is sparse, but it seems that Galicia-Volhynia was divided between the Lithuanians (Liubartas ruled in Volhynia and its chief city Volodymyr) and local nobles (Detko ruled Galicia).[3] During the winter of 1340-1341, the Golden Horde (probably with Lithuanian help) attacked Poland and reached Lublin as a result of diminished tribute from the principality to the Mongol khan.[3] John of Winterthur reports attacks by the Mongols on Hungary, the March of Brandenburg and Prussia during this period as well.[5] The raid weakened Polish influence in the principality. In order to assist Casimir, a Hungarian contingent commanded by William Drugeth entered the Ruthenian border and fought against the Mongols. Eufemija, Yuri Boleslav's widow, was drowned in the Vistula in winter 1342 to keep her out of the succession disputes.[3] Detko, who managed to play Poles, Lithuanians, and Mongols against each other, disappeared from written sources in 1344. The same year direct conflict between Poland and Lithuania renewed, but soon a peace treaty was signed: Volhynia was assigned to Liubartas and Galicia to Casimir"

Jesus, beloved Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and was the first capital of Russia. Lviv is a Polish city with 700 Polish history. After the first partition of Poland in 1772, it found its way to the Austro-Hungarian border. This is where the Polish scouting movement was born, and the Pogoń Lwów football club is also Polish. Poland still cares about Lviv and even finances the renovation of its city

@@syroxPL Wrocław and Szczecin were in Poland in 950. The difference is that the Germans lost the First and Second World Wars and Poland won it. Lviv was taken away from Poland on a different basis.

Let us put the record straight: Lviv/Lwów is an old Polish city which is now part of Ukraine - and irrevocably so (says I whose Polish ancestors had lived there for centuries). It is tempting to draw facile and misleading parallels with thousands of great cities around the globe with similarly contorted histories. You might ask: is London/Londinium a Roman city, since it was started under Roman rule? Even more controversially: could present-day Italy claim it’s ownership? Yet look up any tourist publication from the city of Bath, and (who knows?) you may be shocked to see it proudly proclaim itself as an “old Roman town”…

@@catnap387 If Wrocław is an old German city (which i agree with, unlike Gdańsk which had mostly been part of a SOVEREIGN Polish state), then, by the same logic (your own sic.), Lwów must needs be an old Polish city - in a small part developed (with Polish nous and capital) under a brief (relative to its history) Austrian occupation.

I have got all documents for these things which comes from jagiellonian Gródek (Городок) it was created at 1890 in administrative office. To conclude: it's polish land and I will never consider that is a ukrainian land.

Now Lviv is Ukrainian and by the way Lviv was founded by the Ukrainian. For a long time Lviv was Polish. But does it mean that it is Polish now? Of course no. With the same success I can say that Wroclaw is German.

@@cheerwizard21 Ukraine is a Cossack land, people are an ethnic mix, Lviv has nothing to do with Cossacks, when the first Cossack state was established, Lviv was already a Polish city inhabited by Poles, with most of the infrastructure built by Poles

All historical sites were built BEFORE it was occupied by Stalin and was given to Ukraine. So these historical sights became World Heritage. It belonged to Poland, Austro- Hungarian Empire.

My Dad went to uni there. He met my Mom @ Lwow Uni... We visited Lwow many times together. We love Krakow... Even more than Lwow... Ma Dad passed away, never had the chance to visit Krakow 😔

Today's Lviv was developed by Austria. If Ukraine had received 150 billion euros from Europe like Poland then more would be done. The Poles should be grateful for their euros and remember that the British left European Union because of the vast numbers of Poles who went there for work and the British had had enough!!!! Lviv will be managed in a better way under the Russian government. This city was built and erected during the Soviet Union. This is a simple proof that Russian people are creative and genius. Well no wonder they are genius since Lomonosov was a Russian. 🇷🇺❤️🇷🇺

Designed by a polish architect. Until second world war predominantly inhabited by polish. My father in law family is from Lwow. I still have his certificated from school before the war.
