The ITV Network: Part 21 - London Weekend Television
Our journey through the ITV Network continues here on the Ident Review Extra! This time around, we're finishing off our look in the London region, by taking a look at the company that took over ATV's duties of broadcasting in the capitol during the weekends! Starting up in tandem with the weekday service, Thames Television, join me as we look through nearly five decades worth of idents, from London Weekend Television!
The Ident Review Extra began in the April of 2020 and covered all of the idents seen on BBC2 during the 1990's and early 2000's. After a Christmas runs in December, the series has had a long rest. But now it's back, taking a trip through all the different regions of the ITV Network!

I found this channel yesterday and binged the most of it. This is stupid retro nostalgia I love and we need more of it. Thanks and Godspeed with the channel.

The one at 3:11 is my favourite, the star shape bursting into tiny red, white and blue particles, a lot of effort gone into that one.

I really enjoyed LWT's idents! I really like the video-wall ident, it looks so nice to me! If LWT would be around in 2022, then I would after school instantly get my VPN and tune in!

Amazing ident review of London Weekend Television idents! My favourite ident from LWT would of course be the 1996 ident, aka the best ident of the ITV network in my opinion. The CGI animation is absolutely fantastic. It's also an really memorable ident for viewers in London, UK, along with Thames Television's 1969 ident.

I liked the LWT ident that didn't break up at the end. Ie followed the contours of the river (very loosely)

LWT also tended to do a lot of the national weekend evening shows so in a way became ITVs weekend channel. One thing that might be cool for you to show us, is how a lot of the colour idents looked like in black and white as it took ages for everyone to get colour TV especially if you were further from London.

Great episode! LWT had some great idents. I have a feeling that “Your weekend ITV” was only seen in London mainly before local programmes, always thought that was a bit naff compared to the main Idents. Also always enjoyed the stark handover from Thames on Friday evening. It was aimed to make an mark and announce the start of the weekend, in a much more upbeat way. (And the 6 O’Clock Show titles always were good, but that’s another story)

This is correct. Your weekend ITV version was only used in London, it wasn’t national.

The 1996 main ident has always reminded me a lot of the 1985 Grampian one, very similar formup.

LWT was unique and the start of the weekend. Always tuned in to the handover every Friday from Thames. Remember when change Thames didn't really like mentioning their name or vice versa until the last year of Thames. Was upset when LWT ended 2002

The London Weekend river idents are my favourite versions, a classic 70s look, we still seem them when talking pictures tv channel shows an old LWT series, such as Budgie or Gentle Touch, but when Upstairs Downstairs was shown the ident and end caps were missing, just showed an itv studios end cap, however the re-recorded first episode because of the 1970 colour strike did have the original river ident, thereafter none.

The 1986 idents had 2 versions depending on what type of programme it was. The first (longer) version was for networked programmes, the second shorter version was for local programmes only. It's known as "Genesis". The long version is also my mobile message tone :-D

Thames Television switch to London Weekend Television (LWT) on New Year's Day 1982 with a New time 5:15pm every Friday
@johnking5174
@johnking5174 2 года назад
LWT had lobbied the IBA to move their Friday start time to 5.15pm, as LWT claimed Thames Television were placing poorly rated shows at 6.30pm to ensure LWT had a bad lead in for their start at 7pm Fridays. Thames Sport was commonly used, a programme which was minority and did not pull in the family audience on a Friday night.

Cool video Adam LWT is an awesome itv weekend region because on Friday night - Sunday at 7pm when LWT started but until 1982 because LWT started at 5 : 15 pm because of franchise changes. However in 1968 the day after LWTs launch from August 3rd-18th the itv nations strike happened. Although On The Buses is a classic LWT Production Comedy.

LWT was class you only had to look at the south bank Tv centre ,that was heavily shown ,the invision continuity announcers have a picture of it behind them and mr Lewis proudly saying this is LWT broadcasting from our studios on the south bank,sadly it’s up for demolishing to be replaced by offices and yuppy flats ,itv is now to me pants once a great channel with all its regions .love the channel BTW its interesting thank you 👍🏻😊

What a waste, & have seen the 1971 documentary about it's construction .starting 1970. surly a large iconic studio in the centre of London would be a thing to save , especially as so much TV history was produced there , mostly for ITV network , but some shows on BBC1& 2 were produced there.

There was a newer ident introduced in 1995 retaining the old LWT logo before the new logo was introduced in 1996. There was also a different version of the video wall ident introduced in 2000 that was much more red in colour compared to the later and final version you showed here.

5:10 Adam said the LWT River was blue, white and red stripes. As a proud Londoner, I have to correct him: it was originally blue, white and ORANGE. The orange stripe did subsequently become red, though: bit like the Dutch flag, in that respect

You can see the vast difference in LWT only bidding £7,500,000 annually for its franchise compared to the £43 million paid by Carlton. LWT was always the far superior in the 90's in both on screen presentation and obviously it provided programmes to the network. You can see why Granada went for LWT and left Carlton in 1994!

I don't think I've seen that 1983 intro before, and somehow I feel it lost the point of the original whilst trying to keep it. Surely a better animation would have been to have three coloured ribbons fluttering in the wind before merging into first the "river logo" (never heard that term before) and then the LWT one? By the way, don't you mean Aquafresh rather than Colgate?

The river ident was magenta white and cyan, when they changed to your weekend itv, it changed to red white and blue. I used to get scared when the Solari ident came out. The genisis ident was a bit better as it was the letters fading into view, the solari had the venetian blind effect which was mainly used in LWT optouts, such as local news.

8:11 - In 1996, LWT had been owned for two years by Granada Television. The management at Granada wanted to not rock the boat when they took ownership of LWT in 1994, but come 1996 they wanted to spruce and freshen up the idents of LWT and they did so here.

Though before LWT as such, the programmes I recall , apart from World of Sport, were Police 5 with Shaw Taylor, anything with Janet Street Porter, (and Clive James). The Golden Shot with Bob Monkhouse ( I think made by ATV in Birmingham), there was the odd Theatre/Play / South Bank Show that were a bit too highbrow for me.

For me, the "river" ident (with or without the "T") and music is an unbeatable iconic classic. The video wall was pretty good too. The "shutters" designs have not aged well and were pretty naff even at the time.

I don’t understand why there was 2 tv franchises for London, it’s the only place in the world where there is a weekend tv network? Is there a reason why?
@11nitrox
@11nitrox 7 месяцев назад
Given the size of the audience and the ability to charge more for advertising and thus make more programmes, the London franchise was split into weekday and a weekend providers. No company was permitted to hold both of these franchises simultaneously. This helped prevent either company from becoming too dominant in the ITV network.
