Bravo for giving Dr. Asher an opportunity to discuss the problems with higher education. He's an excellent communicator and presents the differing perspectives in a very charitable manner.

From the title alone, I agree so much! I’m getting my PhD at UCLA and the curriculum, especially ones geared towards “minority students” (critical race theory in particular) just tell students like myself that we are victims and white people are horrible. I’m soo sick of it😩

Well a lot of it is not optional as it’s intertwined within certain curriculums and programs

@@smelltheglove2038 - If only it were as simple as that! Unfortunately, in many departments and programmes candidates for faculty positions are required to provide diversity statements when they apply for jobs. These amount to oaths of fealty to woke doctrine. As for graduate students, they have no option but to go along with woke ideology as this ideology has become an integral part of university study.

I can't believe this man is a professor at Lewis & Clark College - he must be so lonely at that campus! I went to Lewis & Clark graduate school in Portland and am embarrassed to say so. Worse yet to have paid good money for an indoctrination instead of an education before I caught on. On the other hand, it has made me a staunch supporter of free speech and keeping wokeness, as well as other bad ideas, out of education.

I went through this experience when I first started teaching but not from the social justice angle. I taught at a religious school and it was very explicit that the school taught religious values primarily and academics were subsumed. But there's lots of parallels between the two. When you apply for a social justice school (seems like the most expensive private schools) you have to put together a DIE statement that can pass muster. At those fanatical religious schools (most religious schools are not fanatical) you have to put together a personal theology statement that can pass muster. What I wonder is when will these rich parents wake up. They send their kids to these elite private schools for status, not realizing they are sending their kids into a madrasa. At least when I talked to the parents of the religious schools, they knew what they were getting and they wanted their kids indoctrinated.

I’m a graduate student working to earn my PhD. I received my undergraduate degree at a private university so long ago (class of 2011) that my professors were still presenting the curriculum in a neutral way. I embarked on my masters degree 5 years later and while they were more opinionated I was still able to counter popular thought (think room full of rabid vegans) and come out with a grade I felt I earned. Now in my PhD at a major public university I am finding myself self-censoring in fear of tarnishing my transcript that will be my calling card into the job market in a few short years. As someone who loves the endeavor of knowledge creation and teaching, it’s feels crazy to realize that teachers at every level are the problem. I just hope that the college student who come to my classes and labs are able to leave with some semblance of reality.

It sounds like Asher is defining "woke" as special exceptions for black students and poor students. Asher jumps back and forth from S-Schools so-called indoctrination where future teachers do not really learn the graduate curriculum to the situation of K-12 teaching-learning where SES and race overdetermine student achievement leaving the lower two-thirds of the population without any real education. For example, the value of the High School Diploma seems to be standardized in Asher's view - it means something specific like "college-ready" or a certain reading comprehension level. Given that every school is different because of the mix of people and funding disparities, this vaunted standard contradicts the multiplicity of experiences from these various schools. Asher needs to address the apparent discrepancy between values education or values in education - not to imply that values are necessarily explicitly taught in school - and the so-called "woke" ideology of social justice or equity. Asher makes it seem that these values are "indoctrinating." I am skeptical of any claim about our experience in reality where race, the race struggle, and racial opinions are not overly sensitized, because as individuals we are expected to be respectful of these cultural differences. However, I am fully aware that racial discrimination and race hatred is pervasive both between cultures and within cultures, including so-called religions. Asher needs to define more clearly the obstacles in graduate education which forestall students from becoming adequate teachers. The values demanded for cooperative behavior in the schools K-12 and college are somewhat universal, so to denounce "woke values" as indoctrination is ingenuous.
