Freelance. If I can do it, anyone can. Find one good freelance job -- ideally from a *small* business owner, do a good job, use that as a reference, and get the independent contractor tax docs if they ask for it. One good freelance reference can take up several months of a gap.

I feel that. I used to work as an HR officer for a media agency and I am absolutely proud to have hired one of the best hard working and talented people. They seemingly didn't "fit the bill" for what was to look for but they knocked it out of the park when it came to delivery. There was always a chance and a risk when taking on people that didn't necessarily have the qualifications but had the "ability" to fulfill the job. Sadly, had to leave because I was moving to a different country.

Most HR is people who have a degree, and pleasant people and absolutely useless for anything else. Someone there (HR) does most of the paperwork but they NEVER are involved in the hiring process. The HR hiring people often have not a f*cking clue what the job is they're hiring for, and they look for "keywords". Often they let software search for those keywords. No keyword, or the wrong one, your resume hits the electronic trashcan. As for interviewing? How can you evaluate someone for a job, when you have no inkling what that job is or does?

those days actually the job offers lie more than even most creative liar could even imagine. I actually miss work market when it was ruled by employers ... at least you had chance to see thier true face ... now they are hiding everything and try to appear better than they are. Back then ... they said there are 100 more people outside waiting to take this job. It is really not good and in fact nowadays people jump from job to job more than before not because they can't keep it but mostly because of lies from companies. Once people learn work is not what they were promised to move on ... onto next company that lies even more hahah. Well good for me I learn from mistakes and I cannot be fooled anymore easily. In the above example I eventually said you ignored every answer I gave this interview I might as well have lied about the company name I would have gotten a fair interview.

It kinda reminds me of how some jobs will give you a 2 week bootcamp to understand their programs/how they run things. Being honest for a large part of my life only made me gullible and caused me to suffer. It wasn't till I started playing the game too that things started to go more in my favor. Now I know it's more about who you chose to lie to and who you are completely honest to. If I told a thief I have $100 in my wallet, he will mug me. But if I lie to him and I'm confident enough to do it, I can walk away from the situation with my cash. True story. Already has happened to me 3 times. @Kry Kry - Some clarification. You can’t outright lie, that makes no sense. If you can’t back it up, don’t put it on your resume. The goal is to get past recruiters and filters. Once you have the interview, they will give an offer if you know what you’re talking about, and mesh with the team. You can make up the title on the resume, but always use your official title when filling out forms for the official background check.

Recruitment agencies never fact check your experience they would simply accept what you give and forward it to companies, which I am hoping they do cause usually they are only in it for the money. Secondly, let me ask you also this - which companies search and fact check or verify? If they look at your resume and see the experience they need they would hire you immediately. That is just leaving the countless biases that also goes with recruiting.

I have welded for five years and lied about having shift lead experience. I just had to say I had experience and the job was mine with the $12 jump. Doing the exact thing I always was, simply telling others to do the same things I’m doing.

My foundation is solid, they see the stable and can't question the Clydesdale. If you end up getting found out but also end up being their number 1 guy it'll be hard for em to fire you as well. No, that’s not why you’re taught it. Honesty is the best policy. Any corruption you allow into your life breeds more. It will crush you, drain you of life and cause unforeseeable complications and hardships. Your role applying for jobs is to see through the listed “requirements” for what they are - dreamed up qualifications. Every job requires learning the technical aspects, the specific methodology used by organization and navigating the social structure. @@Denastus From my experience: Contract roles are no issue. I haven't heart complaints from hiring managers about candidates having a lot of contracts in their work history. If a hiring manager sees permanent roles lasting less than one year, they often complain about a candidate's work history being "spotty." A "spotty" work history isn't that big of a deal as long as it's from fully completed contract roles, but unfortunately hiring managers do prefer to see long tenures in permanent roles.

You’re right, I was in HR and for this fact I quit my field. It’s not that HRs are inhumane, the profit makers make us do all these kinds of things. You technically don't "have to" you don't owe them anything, if you get another higher paying job, then leave. I've done it twice and I do not care or regret anything. When a job starts acting funny I act accordingly. Most I've ever given was one week. They can't force you to give two weeks.

CEO's are so greedy for the immediate money and blind to the lower-level operations, that they fail to take the necessary steps to make truely sustainable money. 1. People love blaming the working class...we're lazy, we don't know what we're doing - we're gaming the 'system' when in fact, the people that are passionate, loyal, more than capable, talented, and can excel the company into profits 10x fold typically end up getting passed up by someone who matched the words on the job description to their resume. You wanna talk about the economy. I'll put it in basic terms. So much more often than not, we see people hiring for jobs that they don't understand the full day-to-day operations and average-talent requirement for, it's crazy. actually, if anyone ever calls you out on a lie, the best course of action IS to come clean. The person is throwing you a bone by confronting you about the dishonesty rather than disregarding you, and coming clean will actually instill greater trust as it shows that you are willing to admit you mistakes. You did the right thing though and through. Lie at first because that's the game. But if an employer actually confronts the lie with truth, then they are more likely an honest company and deserves honesty at that point.

I think this is true a lot of the time but it can go wrong too. Not too long ago I took a job that most get degrees for without any degrees or related experience myself. I actually was getting it down, but my coworkers were incredibly impatient when I would make inevitable mistakes or not immediately know how to do something. Bottom line, this idea works if you get a job with friendly and forgiving people, but this can also piss certain people off quickly too.

@@shamfyre Almost every boss I've had has lied so hard on their resume to get their position and it's so frustrating because often internal candidates get overlooked for promotion but then they hire someone from the outside who has the luxury of being able to exaggerate.

You can be the most honest person in the world and under sell yourself but ultimately that is your own fault. I am not saying you have to straight up lie to be a competitive job applicant btw, but exaggerating a detail here or omitting something there is fair game imo.

Great take! I feel they want the top 1% of workers for 50% of the expected salary. Even in a perfect world, this doesn't exist, if we aren't nurturing upcoming potential talent, there isn't going to be anyone else to fill in for their impossible job requirements. This is will perpetually create a ripple effect where the industry is so tight on talent where corporations will either outsource or just stop dealing with this technical field altogether. It's kinda like the Android app dev craze a few years back, whereas as of today, the Android app dev is a dying industry, often times devs aren't compensated very well and the only people who put up with it, do it because it's either a recreation or working in some code factory in India.

I am honest all the time and on my last run i got a contract on my mail ever time i left the building. Also, as i am an idiot lol, i never found their office first time and got there late around 20-45 minutes on every job interview. I simply, as mentioned in my comment, go there, open my notebook and show what i did, only talk about what i really know - programming - and also start to test my interviewers knowledge. They notice that. Edit: If the job says "Oh you need c++, c#, c, switft, js, html. css, java, brainfuck, office365, adobe and even SPL knowlege" always remember: They also cook with water. No one is an 100% expert in all of these. I know a lot but the most confident i am with the tools i use right now and i use daily. Also you have to realize that your lever is the longer one, they want your work and quality, so tell them a price in a manner of "take it or leave it". Always reject AT LEAST ONE interview/date and tell them that you already have an interview with another company. Dont be like the 10000000 ppl that applied before with their school knowledge on how to apply and properly suck of teachers :'D

@@junaids.9314 when I applied to the company I got into upper management by pretending to have lead a team far larger than I actually had, and acted like I knew a lot about the books, orders, claims, hiring, firing, etc. The truth was I had been a crew leader on a relatively small construction company of only 3 others, and didn't know any of the business admin, hiring or firing. The new job had me run a shop with 18 people under me, swamped in papers. It was a hard learning curve, but I kept and audio recorder and took notes diligently about what had to be done so I could figure out how to keep up. Eventually doing so rather well... a note to be said about that, don't out lie your potential, Jesus that was a lot to take on so fast. Great experience getting thrown to the sharks.

While being interviewed the person asked my what my worst flaw is. I said, "I'm too honest" He replied, "That's not a very serious flaw" To which I responded: "Well I don't care what you think."

I applied for a Night Fill position at a local supermarket. Got an interview, was honest, they said they wanted to offer me a role, but I didn't have my email on my resume, so they requested it for the onboarding stuff. 3 weeks and 2 follow-ups later, nothing. The actual hiring manager came back when i followed up the 3rd and final time with a phone call. She said 15 people got put on, but she doesn't know who. So i wasted essentially a month for a job that i was told i had, but was never *actually* given. May argue the fact that 'if you didnt hear back you didnt get it'. They called me 4 hours after interview to offer said role. If i wasn't getting it, why do you want my details for onboarding? My job gap grows wider lmao

Two week notice, am I too European to understand this? Here they can fire you only with a three month notice, in higher positions only with a six month notice. Of course they can tell you not to show up again, but have to pay you the salary anyways.

@@AlexanderWeixelbaumer not in the USA. Unless you're a contract employee (vast majority of Americans aren't) you can be fired at any time without any reason. Yet employers universally EXPECT at least a 2 week notice before quitting. If you fail to do this they'll refuse to let you use them as a reference. It's illegal for them to bad mouth you to other jobs, many companies have a "no reference" policy anyway due to liability. But I know from working with HR there are "off the record" and "work arounds" to these issues. Just like it's illegal for a company to ask your age, but not illegal to ask for your birthday.

@@laverdadbuscador While it is true you can be fired at any time for any reason, generally companies do give you some notice ahead of time that things may be coming to an end. I'm sure some places don't, such as Wall St. banks, but while these places generate a lot of noise, they're not really typical.

Everyone I've ever known my entire life has also never been given any kind of notice. I've lived in NY, WA, and OR. So perhaps your state is full of nicer people, but in the states I work that isn't common practice.

@@marusdod3685 I'd guess they figured out, but I kept in mind what my friend told me which was "If the foremen like you, you won't get fired even if you're not so great, as long as you don't sit there and do nothing" and the foremen at the job site walked me through the process to show me how they do it cause I told them that's not exactly the construction I did, if I had any question I'd ask the guys, no one told the foremen or the employer that I didn't know what I was doing, I was nice to all the guys so they were, too. Most comments I got from the foremen were about the positive energy I have. They appreciated the hard work I put in even tho it was obvious I was a rookie, I eventually started working at the same speed as everyone else.

Not only that, unlike years ago, you’re supposed to tailor your resume to each job. Then, you go into some online system, fill out everything, including your pet’s name and no one ever even knows you applied, because something in the system kicks it out or the job was published, but they already had someone in mind for the job, who’s working inside as a contractor already, that they have them fill out the application to be sent directly to HQ. Ask me how I know. Because I was that person inside. And it’s weird, too. I actually got contacted by a former VP I used to work for, who wanted to work there. I was glad to help as, I liked him but, he didn’t get the job and I was never told why. Probably had someone else in mind already.

They made me jump through hoops for MONTHS, FBI background check and everything (and transcripts are not free!) ...of course I didn't get that job lmao btw it was 2016. I found out at the interview, it paid $15/hr. Lab technician position. I can't believe I cried over it.

The moral degradation of our society is appalling. I’m going to continue being honest, I’ve made a lot of money in the stock market with the objectivity that comes along with not having baggage. I don’t want to not be able to trust myself. Lying is a slippery slope and I stopped all that as a teenager. Honesty inadvertently just landed me a sales job. I wouldn’t have been picked due to scheduling ambiguity with school if I omitted truth. It goes both ways. Plus I’m a bad liar and it makes me feel phony and like dog shit.

The thing is 3rd party background checks can and will call up your current employer. They don't need to say this guy is applying to work for us. They can pretend to be from the bank doing a background check for a loan and they need the company to verify if the person is currently working there.

But consider this: The popular Econ book "Freakonomics" shown the Real Estate salesmen had a code in their newspaper Ads that sold properties quicker and steered Salemen away from properties. I remember the Book mentioned code used words, e.g., "nice interior" or "solid foundation" which would get a certain reaction. Maybe a HR response like " would rehire this person" is only the tip of on the Iceberg? Ideas?

The problem is that when they try to picture the ideal candidate, they throw in a lot of stuff they don't actually need "just in case", multiple degrees, 10 years experience for the exact same job etc. for say a janitor job.

There are billions of us so its not like they're going to hurting for bodies any time soon.

With millions of immigrants, both legal and illegal coming into this country every year, and with H1-B visa workers and outsourcing, employers can afford to treat prospective and even current employees as less than human. We need to stop voting for politicians who let them get away with this stuff, but they're the ones filling their campaign coffers not us.

Because more often than not you may get someone who is actually more qualified than what you are looking for. So for the most part, if you think you can do it, apply anyways. Definitely have different versions of your resume, especially as you gain more work experience. Many employers/hiring managers want resumes that are less than 3 pages.

It all depends on the position and company you apply for. I'd say over 70% of the places and positions you apply to wont check, but some will. For example, non entry level jobs and goverment jobs will most likely check to see if you worked x places.
