Fundamentalist preacher John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in California said during a recent conference that PTSD, OCD, ADHD, and other forms of mental illness are essentially hoaxes.
“There's no such thing,” he said of those conditions.
He's absolutely wrong.

@@benjaminmadrigalperez9010 - they're not using hyperbole, he publically shamed a woman who used to attend his church because she left her abusive husband, a now-convicted PDFile currently in prison serving 21 years for physical and sexual abuse towards children, after she suffered spiritual abuse at the hands of MacArthur's church seeking help for both her and her own children as they tried to convince her to go back to her abuser. MacArthur even told the congregation to pray for the abusive husband and told them to treat the survivor as an "unbeliever" He's literally an advocate for domestic abuse

No, PTDS is NOT grief. PTSD is when I got in my car in the carport, and a carjacker surprised me and put a gun to my head. After he robbed me, he pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't go off right away. It took YEARS of therapy to get past that.

PTSD is a survival response and won't be "cured" by words. How can I assert this? Because abused or traumatized animals can have PTSD. I've personally seen horses and dogs with PTSD. They do not have the structures our "Higher Brains" have. That means it is a hard-wired change to their nervous system that will lead to behavior that will prevent the incidents from happening again. That means the animal has it for life. We are animals and it can happen to us too. That Preacher is nothing but a spoiled rotten boot licking asshole that strings words together and expects his ass to get kissed and presumes to think we have given him authority.

I grew up with a brother that had cerebral palsy, blindness and intellectual disabilities. His disabilities were attended to and he was brought to doctors and helped. Me? I developed depression and anxiety because of my learning struggles in math and reading, as well as being bullied at school and home. I was actually screamed at by my grandmother for being depressed and anxious. My depression and anxiety were thought to be things that I chose. They were thought to be my fault. No one ever said that my brother’s blindness, his lack of walking, and his low iq were sins. My depression and anxiety, that were brought on by my academic difficulties and abuse at home and school, were thought by my family to be sins. I was told I was sinning by being depressed or anxious. I was told that other forms of mental illness were sins. I was told that people with mental illness were choosing to sin and be away from god. I was told that sinners were going to hell. Now who told me all of this? Certainly not my agnostic parents who didn’t go to church and who didn’t make my brother go because “of his handicaps”. It was my grandmother and to a lesser extent my grandfather, who said these things to me. They watched me before and after school while my parents worked. Oh, and even though my parents and brother didn’t go to church, I was forced to go. It was supposedly to make my grandmother happy. I had a former therapist tell me that it was probably a good thing that I was forced to go to church because I learned how to be a good person there. Ahh, even my own mother actually told me people can learn not to murder, not to lie, or not to steal without ever setting foot in a church. Not only was I forced to go to church to make grandma happy, but my dad used to make fun of me for going. “How’s the Pope?”, he would ask me with a smirk. Anyway, by the time I was an adult, my disabled brother was the saint of the family who would automatically ascend into heaven when he died. I was the sinner that couldn’t get her life together because I “didn’t pray hard enough”, when I prayed as hard as I possibly could. I went to church as a child and young adult. I was forced to as a child, and as a young adult I went because I made the stupid mistake of moving in with my grandparents. I really had nowhere else to go. In retrospect, I should have chosen the streets. I prayed. I even tried reading the Bible from cover to cover . I finally read it from cover to cover and realized that the xtian god is even worse than I thought. Actually reading the Bible for myself made me realize just how genocidal god is. I tried very hard to be a good Catholic xtian. I got abused as a result. I tried explaining the scientific reasoning for mental illness. I showed articles that had pictures of MRIs and or pt scans to my relatives. I could not get my closest relatives to understand that psychiatric disorders occur in the brain, that they are due to chemical imbalances or structural defects. They would not believe me. They believed in my brother’s disabilities and had empathy for him, but not for me. I’m still traumatized by all this. Thank goodness for my therapy. I would not be able to deal with society (USA). This is the exact environment I lived in for so long as a xtian catholic. It scares me that much of American society is like the family I grew up in. No wonder I sometimes am tempted to isolate.

And, okay, I GET that this is just an anecdote, okay, but when I was 17, I was in hospital with brain hemorrhages, and I had this HUGE seizure that stopped my heart for a few minutes. I don't remember how a lot of this went down, but pre-seizure, every sound in the room seemed amplified, and so my mom put rolled up cloths beside my ears to drown things out a bit. After that, the air above my head started looking all blue and wavy, like I was looking at the ceiling through lake water. I remember asking mom and dad, "Why is everything blue?" and then there was a sound like a match being struck, I saw black for half a second, and then nothing. I woke up, not sure how long later, in the ICU with a breathing tube down my throat, VERY confused, and mom and dad had to explain to me that, after I blacked out, I made this gagging sound and stopped breathing. Dad ran out into the hall, got a nurse, they called a code blue (that's hospital-speak for "someone has stopped breathing"), and mom and dad cleared the hell out to the waiting room while they gave me the defib. I guess there were, like, twenty people in the room to help stabilize me? ANYWAY, everything gets cleared up and I'm out of hospital, eventually, and I'm home, and I'm sleeping in my own bed, NOT eating hospital food (no seriously, you have no idea how big a deal that is unless you've been on hospital food for a while), but I'M NOT HAPPY. Why am I not happy? It made no sense to me. I alternated between fits of sobbing, and feeling nothing at all. I hadn't LOST anything, as Mr. MacArthur here talks about with the distinction between grief and PTSD, and I was healthy again, and I was FREE, and my IV bruises were healing, so why was I not happy? That would be called PTSD. Because I almost died, I was still suffering internally, even though my external circumstances had vastly improved. It was a trauma response. So mom got me into therapy, and my real healer was time, if I'm being honest. Can't remember how long I was in therapy for, but eventually, I kinda, like...unfroze. Woke up again. I actually remember that part: I was upstairs in my bedroom, gorgeous sunny day, listening to Owl City (the first album is good, don't @ me), and I remember, I looked out the window and said to myself, "Oh. The sun is shining." But I could FEEL that the sun was shining. Emotionally feel it. That's when the deadness first started ebbing away. PLEASE remember that results will vary between cases. Get yourself help for this kind of thing: if you had a broken arm, you'd go to the doctor for it, right? Get a cast? Why should getting help for your mind be any different/ Your brain is a body part, too, just like your arm. And it can, like all the rest of you, get sick or get injured and need help in the healing process. Don't suffer on your own because of people like this motherf*cker.

ADHD was around before it could be treated with medication. It just wasn't diagnosed. My grandfather in his 60s has almost the exact same ADHD symptoms I do, but because people didn't understand it when he was younger it was seen as him just being "odd". It wasn’t until after I was diagnosed that the rest of the family where able to work out why he did certain things. They knew making random noises while walking around in public, getting distracted mid conversation and wandering off, forgetting basic things like getting food, and a long list of other things he does aren't normal but there was never much explanation as to why. Having a name, and resources to better understand the condition has been really helpful for the entire family. I know other older relatives and even the friends of other older relatives who are in similar situations. I can think of at least two older people I know who are lovely but almost certainly in some way neurodivergent and growing up at least one of them was pretty severely bullied because of it. The same applies for things like LGBT people. I've heard people say asexuality is a "new" identity people made up to feel oppressed, but then one of my granny's best friends is a woman in her 70's who's never married or had a relationship and is pretty open about the fact that she's never felt attraction to anyone and hasn't the slightest romantic interest in anyone. I have friends who have other older relatives who would probably be considered bisexual today but just didn't have the words for it then. There have always been different kinds of people it was just hidden or misunderstood until recently.

As someone with OCD, this made me so irritated, I couldn't talk properly, because my lower jaw was shaking. OCD IS more than anxiety or hand-washing. It's hand-washing to the point of burnout. It's experiencing and struggling with intrusive thoughts possibly to the point of wanting to take your life. Denialist and Reductionist tripe!

I am not a transient on the streets in Los Angeles. I have dealt with a lot of transients in Los Angeles over the years. I don’t think we do nearly enough to help those folks. I don’t think cops are well equipped to help transients. I think that Christian leaders should spend time, money, and effort trying to help transients as the Bible claims that Jesus did but I don’t recall ever seeing or even hearing of John MacArthur helping transients in Los Angeles. I have looked up John MacArthur’s net wealth and the wealth of his family business on a few occasions. The figures involved suggest to me that John MacArthur is not terribly concerned about living his life according to the values of Jesus.

Has anybody ever seen an abused or traumatized horse? An abused or traumatized dog? Horses and dogs don't have psychologists. They don't have a cerebral cortex and prefrontal lobe. They do have a brain stem. Horses and Dogs can show signs of PTSD when traumatized through abuse or other experiences. They can get the uncontrollable shakes and get skittish and their behavior changes and they act like the fightful experience never stopped. That is PTSD. Perhaps if MacArthur were sufficiently traumatized instead of traumatizing others, he might understand this notion about PTSD. "It doesn't mean anything to me unless it happens to me" is so very Christian. That is what happens when you act like Jesus was the only one who ever suffered.

Sadly, MacArthur's thoughts are common in Christianity and I would assume most religions in general (but I am not familiar with specifics on other religions related to mental health but the commonality of psychological control in religion lends heavily towards them NOT wanting you to get well in any other way, when they can try to convince you that their "god" was the one that miraculously cured them of their demons.) My pastor before I left the church (basically kicked out) said almost the exact same thing, but he said PTSD is unconfessed sin and demon possession. I did 2 back-to-back combat tours in Fallujah, Iraq and when I got back home I had nightmares, flashbacks, and a host of symptoms that are the hallmarks of PTSD. A veteran service organization helped get me a service dog that was great because when i get that 1000 yard stare and start grinding my teeth the dog would lick my face and snap me out of it and petting her calmed me down and gave me something here and now to focus on instead of the past. My pastor said I was relying on an animal instead of God in my troubles and said i should be praying in those moments not leaning on a dog for help; he even said dog is God spelled backwards that should tell you that you are coming at this from the wrong direction. He told me to get rid of the dog, donate the money i spend on food and vet bills to the church to "let god work in my life", he said my nightmares were demonic possession or influence and that PTSD doesn't exist. It also came out in marriage counseling with this pastor that my wife was frustrated because we weren't having sex anymore because my injuries in Iraq and the surgeries when I got back made it pointless and very painful. He first started making fun of me like I couldn't please my wife, and we had never talked about my injuries in specifics before but I explained that my injuries and the surgeries when I got back from combat made me sterile and they had to remove severely damaged "vital anatomy" in the love making process. He said that's troubling and that he would consult other leaders in the church about it. A week later he got back to me and said I had hid this information from them (I just never talked about my combat injuries and the results because they were traumatic); he quoted Deuteronomy 23:1 "He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord". He said I couldn't be a deacon anymore, and that I was no longer allowed to teach in the church (at the time I was teaching a class on the Middle East since i spent a lot of time there and had pictures of modern day structures from my service there. And I covered what the modern location were called in the bible). Since my junk was destroyed they basically relegated me to the same way they treat women in the church; "we will tolerate you but you must be silent and don't you dare teach others." I tried to stay and be a "good little Christian" but within 2 years (after 40 years of being a Christian) I left the church forever and am now an atheist. The atheist community doesn't have rules to sideline you if you get blown up in combat. Funny thing is I still have Christians claim I left the church to pursue my fleshly desires because i just want to sin...I'm like bitch I'm sterile and Asexual there isn't shit happening in that department so why would I ditch a community I was in for over 40 years to seek pleasure when that causes only pain? But that is what some fundamental churches are teaching and how they are treating people with PTSD.

It depends on how far back you go. Some religions explained mental illness as the person acting strangely because they were closer to or actually touched by a god. That experience is so overwhelming that it causes the symptoms. Many times the person would become a Shaman, but mostly they were respected as closer to a deity. The vast majority of religions don't think that way.

You may need antidepressants, or other therapies. ADHD is ADHD. You may need Ritalin. Autism is autism. They like to say its demons, but its just your brain that is wired in a different way. Its hardwired and no medication or prayer would ever change that. We just need to make it easier for autistic people to just be themselves. Its easy to say it doesnt exist. PTSD-like behaviors were first recorded in Assyria between 1300 to 600 BCE, in soldiers returning from war. Evidence for PTSD is literally older than the Bible as it exists today. You know what else is older than the Bible as it exists today? Evidence for OCD, which was identified by Abu Zayd Al-Balkhi in the 9th century, although Plutarch described it long before then. There's a Christian mystical text from the 14th century that discusses what we today call emotional flooding, a type of psychotherapy, in response to OCD. Given hyperactivity wasn't always a problem in society, it's no surprise it wasn't until the modern era that ADHD was discovered, but it was still in 1776 when Melchior Adam Weikard identified ADHD-like behaviors for possibly the first time in history. The takeaway? Man, Big Pharma is really powerful, given they have time travel technologies!

Childhood trauma lasts long after one logically concludes that it's left far behind. Often self medicating for a lifetime, but hopefully breaking the cycle. It's not grief or sadness. It's not avoided by trigger warnings. Comes in the form of distrust and the need to look for escape routes. In the need to have a bag packed in case you need to run, because your wife calls you an asshole for tracking in mud. It's, not only distrust in authority, but the concept that authority is truly, and actively trying to kill you, and anything brushing upon resemblance of authority means that when you are middle aged, you can walk around a bit, and sort out the brain chaos for a while, and then be okay. And the nightmares do get less frequent, but you have to wake up and understand those aren't anything you can control. And then, you critically analyze the brain, why,? and try not to be an asshole. And then have lunch, and start over, after that

One of the books MacArthur cites was The Myth Of Mental Illness by Thomas Szasz It's from the 1960s and I read it in the late 70s Even by that time it was discredited by most professionals. I'm surprised it's still referenced by anybody but I suppose it gives ammunition to bigots. I had a friend who had PTSD and could not take any sudden noise, even relatively soft noises that started up without warning. His own doorbell and telephone would make him jump. Even the air conditioner unit from the house next door starting up startled him. I knew him for some time before being in his home and was surprised that noises that most people would think of as normal in their own home set him off like that. His sense of alarm was very real and very distressing.

It is found in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Herodotus describes it during the Battle of Marathon. Hippocrates described it. The icelandic Gisli Sursson Saga described it. It was considered a disease in Europe and called "Nostalgia", and when it was accepted my Civil War America, it was believed to be a matter of "feeble willed" soldiers, and public ridicule was considered the "cure" for it. After the war a doctor studied veterans and found non-injury related physical issues, and the name Soldier's Heart, Irritable Heart, & Da Costa's Syndrome.
