The Lyke Wake walk is one of Britains classic long distance trails. It crosses the North York Moors National park from west to east and takes in some fantastic scenery, nature and history.
The name is derived from the fact you walk along a rough line of ancient burial sites, with evidence of human usage gong back 10,000 years plus!
There are many challenge walks in Britain and this is one of the best. A true test of a walkers fitness, it takes in around 40 miles from start to end, (depending on the route you take), with around 1800 meters of assent. The idea is to make the route in 24 hours, with anything less than 15 been seen a respectable!
This was Jon and Andy's third attempt at the crossing. What keeps bringing them back? To start with, its a great walk. It takes in the full flavour of the moors in a single day. It's also a great physical challenge, giving a true test a walkers fitness. Most off all its an enjoyable day out, with a real sense of achievement, which is accessible to most walkers, (you don't need climbing skills are super sharp navigation).
Is it the best walk in Yorkshire? We think so!
