FYI for those wondering, there actually is a issue where some folks cannot speak, but CAN sing. It's a weird but also fascinating psychological matter.

I adore this movie! If I'm left with a smile on face the entire duration, it's a masterpiece in my book. Sure, it's no Paddington, but it's still an amazing film. Shawn Mendes was the perfect choice for Lyle's singing voice and the songs (especially this and Rip Up The Recipe) are bangers. While I do agree it's a little weird Lyle sings but doesn't talk, it doesn't take me out of the film at all. I will treasure this as one of the few true family friendly films of today and will be happy to show this to my future kids one day.

It's actually not that weird that Lyle can sing but not talk. There are quite many cases of people who lost their ability to speak (called aphasia), for example after a stroke - however, they're still able to sing. This can be explained by the fact that the left hemisphere of our brain is responsible for speaking, whereas singing activates the right hemisphere. In fact, singing therapy is used sometimes to treat aphasia.

To everyone on here asking: why can he sing but not talk? when watching the film I saw it as one of those “it is easier to sing with a speech impediment” things. People who stutter or lisp can often sing perfectly, because it is using a different section of their brain. I can only imagine this is more so if the speech issue is mental/emotional. I sort of assumed he learned how to sing because it was fun, but was too anxious around people to learn how to talk- a sort of selective mutism. And that it got worse rather than better as he was trained to sing in front of an audience. I don’t actually know enough about selective mutism to confirm this is a thing that could happen, but those were the vibes I got from the character.
