This is excellent information that few average turners and no new turners would be aware of. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback Wakely. The RU-vid clips are only parts of the picture. See my "Bowl Basics" DVD for the whole process.

I just bought my first lathe 2 days ago (a Jet 1221) & after watching scores of videos I found this one and you've made an enormous difference in my approach to my lathe and getting my first bowl spinning! Thank you so much!

Welcome to my turning family Gary, thanks for writing. A better teaching tool is my DVDs where you see the entire process and multitudes of methods and techniques that are safe and easy. Watch for my Interactive Remote Demonstrations on my web site, it is live, so you can ask questions for 2 1/2 hours. Stay safe, Merry Christmas.

I don't know if you come back and look at comments on your older videos but I have to tell you; this "Mounting Wood Blanks on a Lathe" is by far the smartest instruction I have watched. For a brand new turner all your videos are excellent and make sense but this one is by far the one that has saved me a mess of pain and stress. Thank you so much! Please, keep them coming.

+Don Beveridge Hi Don, Thanks for the feedback. The RU-vid clips are helpful but only show one piece of the puzzle at a time. The entire process is in my Bowl Basics DVD. Your turning club will likely have it in their library. Enjoy the New Year at the lathe.

Oh man what a relief! Today I put a chunk of wood on my lathe using the faceplate, the wood was lagerer than the faceplate and was also pretty heavy too, I switched the lathe on and I thought it had taken some dancing lessons.... Shake rattle and roll comes to mind. BUt I never knew about balancing between centres. So a big thanks for this....... And greeting from the UK too.

Lyle, I watched your video yesterday 5Jan2020, I was able to balance the log half which saved me the headache of using a band saw that I do not own just yet. This method worked amazingly well.

Hi Lee, Thanks for the feedback. I do things differently than a lot of turners, but as you discovered the methods work better than most. My Bowl basics DVD is a better way to see all the techniques I use and has the continuity of seeing the process start to finish. Enjoy the ride.

One of the most instructive tips as a novice turner who prepared a bunch of blanks with geometric centers. Just one question, do these balance points remain after material is taken off or must it constantly need resetting.
@Lyle
@Lyle 7 лет назад
Hi Art, good question. Unless you have an unusually shaped blank the balance point will not change while roughing out. If it does go way out of balance and vibrates during turning go back and find the balance point again. The balance point will not be the final axis because you will likely adjust it to take advantage of the grain or color or scale considerations of your turning. Adjust the axis in small increments until you have it just right for a spectacular turning.
@timreimensnyder4486
@timreimensnyder4486 4 года назад
Unless the blank is symmetrical the piece will absolutely go out of balance for a while. How badly this happens will depend on how out round (or half round) it is. Another comment is that it should only be attempted at a low lathe speed. Especially if your lathe speed is adjusted by moving the belt. I think few turners would actually recommend mounting a blank between centers as he’s recommending.

Hi Lyle, I have the good fortune of receiving a huge 4 x 4 diameter trunk of black walnut that stands about 3 1/2 feet in length. I will be working with a tree removal guy who probably has no appreciation or knowledge as to how to cut this trunk up into usable wood turning pieces. Would you have any recommendations as to how to approach this good problem? Thanks, Fred
