This is the sister mansion to Whitemarsh Hall, sadly long gone. This architectural jewel needs to be renovated for historical preservation. An absolutely wonderful and breathtaking masterpiece. Horace Trumbauer was one of the best architects in his day that designed and built this beautiful structure. With that said, it would take BIG bucks to bring it back to it's original glory.
Originally the front pediment was much simpler with only a half-circle window and the loggias at each end were open. Some have surmised the sculptures on the pediment were intended to honor the memories of Peter Widener's son George and grandson Harry who died aboard the Titanic.
Wow!! A blast from my past!! While we never found Lynnwood Hall Mansion, the sister house, Whitemarsh Hall (AKA Stotesbury's Mansion, Wyndmoor, PA, was a place I went many, many times!! In the daytime, we used to cut school & go there to party!! At night we went to party and found we were NOT alone!! We would sometimes hear the crying of Eva Stotesbury, said to be looking for her husband, Edward!! He built the mansion for her but after he died, she was said to have gone into a deep depression. The way the driveway was situated, if any cops were coming, we could see & hear the car motors coming & would hide out until they left! Stotesbury's was absolutely breathe taking!! We NEVER destroyed or took anything, but there was evidence other people had. We were like some of these You Tube people now who go to empty places and video taping it except we didn't have computers etc. The location of Whitemarsh, was a long driveway that you could see for at least a mile if there were cars coming, so we could party and hide if we saw a cop car!! It had been used as a chemical making company before they realized it cost way too much money to run it & they left the place open. Our first visit was when we had cut school but it had started pouring rain so we could not go sit in Lorimer Park! Someone mentioned an old mansion, then abandoned, so we went there. In the daytime we found a place to stash the car(s) and walked up the driveway!!! It was the first time that I had ever seen a mansion and I was in awe of it!! The front doors were intact but were wide open! Inside was marble floors & a marble staircase! It had spots where someone had chiseled out some marble so we had to use caution or fall through!! The first time we went there, the bathrooms had been destroyed. Why would anyone want a sink or toilet?? But we later found out that the door handles and the faucets had been made of solid gold!! The first night we heard the crying of a woman, it was just my dear friend, Chrissy (RIP!!) & my future, exp husband, Denny, & his friend Jimmy. Chrissy & I were on the lawn and had brought a bottle of wine & a blanket. The 2 guys went exploring. We had been there at least 2 or 3 hours so we were alone--at least we were the only humans! Then we heard & saw a window on the second floor fly open!! We thought it was Jimmy & Denny and started to laugh. A few seconds later and they had come out of what used to be the old guard shack!! We then heard the cries of a woman!! Chrissy & I could have won an Olympic medal for running back to our car!! The BF's were yelling, "Where are you going?? What's wrong!!??" We told them what happened. After that we knew "Eva" was a lonely & lost soul, looking for her Edward!! After that night, we always said hello to Eva! We never heard her cries in the daytime, but at night she was lost & alone! They should have done what they did to Grey Towers Castle in Glenside. They made it into Beaver College for girls. They renamed it Arcadia University. There were people like us, who never destroyed anything, or the people who stole things & destroyed things! In 1980, they tore down the mansion to put up condos!
Hi. I can relate to so much of your story! I also used to cut school with my friends, get our headlamps on and go explore that magnificent property. We entered through a hole in the cyclone fence has been erected to keep trespassers out. Nice try, but nope. I truly treasure my memories of fhe time I spent there. Next time I come to Philly, I'm planning on visiting The Stotesbury Estates, built on top of the remains with many landmarks left behind
Watching all of the outstanding drone footage begs the question of the absence of horse stalls. This structure (home) must have been completed in the 1900's (Titanic building order was placed in 1908 and it sank in 1912) which is before the big automotive boom hit so folks back then used horses and carriages for transportation. So, where are the horse and carriage stalls?
This property had a lot of land that was sadly sold throughout 20th century.Stables for horses, lavish gardens and fountains all were destroyed and the acres were sold to build stores/other houses.
The Wikipedia article for Lynwood Hall says that two of the original owners died on the Titanic. It also mention the priceless art work that was donated to the National Museum in D.C. It is owned by a Korean Church. A lot of the interior (fire mantels, etc.) has been sold off. It is listed on the Historical Register, so that may mean that it will be maintained from complete collapse until something is done to preserve it.
The Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, more commonly known as the "White Star Line", was a British shipping company. Founded out of the remains of a defunct packet company, it gradually rose up as one of the most prominent shipping lines in the world, providing passenger and cargo services between Britain and the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Today it is most famous for the innovative vessel Oceanic of 1870, the Olympic class ocean liners, including the ill-fated liners RMS Atlantic, RMS Republic, RMS Titanic and HMHS Britannic, and the tender SS Nomadic. Despite its casualties, the company retained a prominent hold on shipping markets around the globe before falling into decline during the Great Depression, which ultimately led to a merger with its chief rival, Cunard Line, which operated as Cunard-White Star Line until 1950. Cunard Line then operated as a separate entity until 2005 and is now part of Carnival Corporation & plc. As a lasting reminder of the White Star Line, modern Cunard ships use the term White Star Service to describe the level of customer care expected of the company.
The church that owns it says it's to much money to maintain it and it cost to much to repair it so they are just going to let the thing implode on itself over time unless somebody buys it
The story behind the house can be found in Peter A.B. Widener II's autobiography "Without Drums." www.amazon.com/dp/B08924HWV8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=without+drums+by+widener&qid=1590426313&sr=8-1 His grandfather Peter A.B. Widener built the house. He made his early money provisioning Union Troops in the Civil War, then invested the proceeds in urban electric rail, and invested that profit in U.S. Steel.
ABANDONED MANSION OF TITANIC OWNER! Lynnewood Hall Mansion! Lynnewood Hall is the abandoned house of Peter A. B. Widener & his family. The Super-Rich family were investors in the Titanic & ended up losing 2 sons in the tragic Titanic Sinking! :-(
NOTE: If you Google "Stotesbury Mansion" you will get some catering place in Philly!! If you Google "Stotesbury Mansion Syndrome" OR "Whitemarsh Hall Mansion" you get the actual mansion!!
Awesome video, Laszlo. Can you tell me the exact equipment you used? Can you hyperlink the info? If not, just the name & model & I'll do the search. I'm a real estate agent in greater-Boston market looking to use drones for my listings, being cognizant of all laws, permits, etc. of course.
Thanks Bill DJI Phantom 3 Pro with an iPad Mini 3 off the remote. I use the Litchi App to plan and fly the flight path. DJI also has the Phantom 4 and the new Mavic which comes out in the next week or so. Their professional line is called the Inspire. FYI, not only does your drone need to be registered but if your are using your photos or video for a business you must take and pass the new FAA test to be certified www.faa.gov/uas/ www.dji.com/phantom-3-pro
