In this video we share our visit to the picturesque towns of Lynton & Lynmouth along the Exmoor coast. This area is known as Little Switzerland because it is very hilly, green, and ideal for hiking. We enjoyed the sea views, the charming harbour full of fishing boats, and most uniquely the water-powered Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway! Come along as we show you where we stayed, what we saw, and get inspiration on where you might like to visit if you get an opportunity to come to this lovely area of North Devon, England!

Thank you Dara!! This brings back a lot of many fond memories. I remember riding the Cliff railway and seeing Linton an Lynmouth as well as Ilfracombe. I remember sitting on the cliffy "beach" at Ilfracombe, just watching and listening to the water, in having to readjust up every few minutes because of the incoming tide. It also reminds me of the River Taw in Barnstaple where in the morning the boats will be facing one direction and in the evening, they would be facing the opposite direction. Barnstable had an amazing outdoor market , filled with everything including food, products, whatever you wanted. I remember getting an ice cream cone from there which was better than most ice creams in the US because it wasn't filled with air but was very good. On top of the ice cream cone was a dollop of clotted cream which made it over the top good! My companion Elder Caudle bought an old family Bible there maybe it was a church Bible but it was huge and had many colorful images inside and a rich leather cover on the top and bottom he only paid like 20 pounds for it. One interesting thing about it was that it was 400 years old so it was older than the United states. I think he still has it.

This was SO beautiful!! And as always, Dara, you select such great background music for your videos. Amazing. Now, I have to mention something I think perhaps some other viewers may be reminded of -- especially those of us here in the US. Anyone who is a fan of Fawlty Towers HAS to have thought of Mrs. Richards, when you were showing the window views from your hotel rooms. Do you remember that episode? She was very annoyed that she did not have a proper "sea view" from her hotel room window, while Basil insisted that yes, she did: "It's over there, between the land and the sky!" Thank goodness your views were way better than that!!
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
I LOVE that you made a Fawlty Towers reference! I only vaguely remember that episode, so I guess I need to re-watch it! Such a funny show! Thanks for your kind comments. I spent way too long on the background music on this one... and then just regretted that I didn't put some EDM proper dance music in the scene with the flashing bedside light... but I was too exhausted by then! haha

Dara & Ian. After writing my last note it reminded me of the old Campbell White Funnel fleet of paddle steamers that ran pleasure trips across the ports of the Bristol Channel. These were generally shallow draft boats and, depending on tides, could sail up the River Wye as far as Chepstow Castle Newport, Porthcawl and around the Gower. These trips were very popular with my Dad's generation living in the mining valleys of South Wales. Travelling by train to a coastal port and then an afternoons cruise across the channel. At those times Wales was also dry (alcohol banned) on Sundays but England, and refreshments for travellers, were permitted. As far as I know only one paddle steamer exists now, the Waverley, she comes from Glasgow for short S Wales season. I took a trip a few years ago from Penarth Pier to Ilfracombe the on to Minehead and via West Somerset heritage railway and then coach to Avonmouth for the cruise back to Penarth. Times passed!

Hi Dara & Ian. Love your video. I live across the Bristol Channel and because of geological features it has the second highest rise and fall in the world. The Bay Of Fundy in Canada has the largest. The River Severn estuary has such a tidal flow that at certain tide conditions the river flows backwards and causes a flow called the “Severn Bore”. When this occurs a wave travels up-stream and many surf the wave. Before the Severn Bridge and M4 motorway were built to get to Bristol and the west you either took a ferry or drove “the long way round”. I remember catching the ferry once or twice, it was a bit of an experience. The ferry had a turntable that was rotated by the deckhand to point you into the correct parking area. One product of a high rise and fall of the tide is the large beaches we have. Southerndown, our local beach has a rocky beach when the tide is in, when it goes out it's a half mile to the sea! In Weston-Super-Mare it can be a mile to the waves when the tide is out.
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
Thanks for all that information! That is amazing!!! I didn't realise that about how large the beaches are in that area. One day we need to take our son Weston to Weston-super-Mare!
@ians3586
@ians3586 3 года назад
I was wondering about that. The difference between high and low tide did seem to be unusually extreme. When I was a kid my mum lived in Ammanford and I used to fly into Gatwick so I regularly crossed the Severn Bridge but I don't remember a time when it wasn't there. Can't imagine having to get around the mouth of the Severn without a bridge!
@RichardWells1
@RichardWells1 3 года назад
@@ians3586 Yes, Ian, there was a (frustrating) time, before Her Majesty The Queen opened the first Severn Bridge in September 1966, that cars for the Aust Ferry would queue several miles along country lanes, through villages, and back as far as the main A38. As a boy I would spend holidays on my cousin's farm in Olveston on the route to the ferry, and was amazed to see how clear the road was once the M4 and bridge were opened. We could actually cycle along the road without seeing a car!

A lovely video. I've never been to Lynmouth and Lynton but it looks beautiful. The nearest I've been is Ilfracombe. There are so many places to visit in Devon and Cornwall and there is never enough time to visit them all. I'm not saying that there aren't places that claim to be award winning when they're not, but it is illegal to do so in the UK. I think you are probably right that there are quite a lot of awards. Also, when you check you often find that it's a yearly award and they won it several years ago, so if an award has been going for 20 years there could potentially be 20 places that can legitimately claim to have won it.
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
There ARE so many places! That's why I need to go back to Cornwall and see lots of places I missed! Yes, there are definitely loads of awards. I just had to make a crack about that! But honestly, when I ate at "award winning" fish & chips places and tried "award winning" pasties and ice creams... I was never disappointed! We have decided that Ian needs to invent his own Ice Cream Award so that he can try every kind in the West Country, LOL!

Staying at 2 hotels was not the plan, but we couldn't stay at one place for the whole time due to their availability. It ended up being better, because we were able to compare.... including the BREAKFASTS! 😉 Spoiler: no grits were served!

Great video, and more amazing drone footage. It really shows off the towns, and their place within the countryside. Such a beautiful part of the world. What a great trip you had, keeps reminding me it's far too long since i was down that way. I'm looking forward the the brekkie comparison video. And those fisherman baskets are good for both lobster, and crabs. I think they're called creels. That Studio 54 style light in your room, that seemed an odd addition to the furnishings. Had Ian remembered to pack his white 3 piece suit? :)

Creels! Thanks for teaching me a new word! Yes, a dance party would have been lovely... too bad I didn't have a red wrap dress and Ian his white Saturday Night Fever suit! We know for next time!
