This video always makes me emotional. I grew up in that time and it's a reminder of how free we used to be, and how it was possible to just have fun without crowds of unhappy dissatisfied people bringing everything down to their level.
I'm glad you got to experience this! Sadly on Oct.29th 1977 Ronnie Van Zant (the lead singer) along with Steve Gaines (the guitarist in the burgandy pants) died in a tragic plane crash. 22 others including everyone on stage that you see here were severely injured. The pilot and copilot, Cassie Gaines a backup singer, and sister to Steve, and a crew member also died. RIP and thanks for the epic performance!
Their plane crash was October 20th, 1977 not October 29th. and the crew member you speak of was actually the band's long time friend and Assistant Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick.
I was lucky enough to see them live at Winterland San Francisco in March 1976. Incredible. I was with my girlfriend parked up in the hills in Castro Valley, California smoking a joint and listening to music on FM KSAN San Fran when the tragic news came on late night that their plane crashed. Never forget. This was one special band.
Most of those sweet young things are grandmothers or great grandmothers by now. It was a totally different world. I wish todays youngsters could experience it.
Love skynyrd one my favorite southern rock bands my favorite song of there's is ballad of curtis Lowe my grandson always hears me playing there music it's his favorite group he's 12 years old his mom took him a month ago to see them in concert for his birthday lol I'm jealous
@@patron40silver certain music black people just don't like. My last concert was a month ago. old-60 in Asheville NC. There might have been 4 blk people there... the last two big county concerts I attended I may have seen 3 if that.... theres your answer...
@@patron40silver if America's past bothers you so much why don't you move to Ukraine or Gaza? You obviously know nothing about America history... millions of people around the world have be slaughtered under the current America flag since WW2.. are you butt hurt under the current flag also ???
Its not, but some CUNTS ATTACHED TO GOVERNMENT made this way, its a battle flag, if you dont agree, fine, but dont judge a book by its cover@patron40silver
Oakland,ca. Day in the green concert. The flag was forced onto the band by an executive to sell records. The label was southern rock, and the flag was the easiest tool to use.The band was against the flag the whole time.
I’m from Florida and grew up with skynyrd group. Saw them live before fame and saw them live during their fame! Big time follower! Today, I almost cry every time I watch their videos and distinctly remember the day of their plane crash. One of many favorable rock groups. Many greats to check out! Recommendations: 1. Group: Chicago Song: 25 or 6 to 4 (live) Lead guitarist: Terry Kath Also a must: (The greatest of all guitarist) Guitarist: Stevie Ray Vaughn Song: Texas Flood (live) Happy ventures!
That's how we rolled back in the day. 80K/90K in a pro sports stadium on a 85° summer day. Jean shorts, tank tops and no cell phones. Your parents and probably grandparents were way cooler than you could imagine! What a time to be alive!
Yes your right. The 70s rocked! I was not at this Day On The Green but saw many of the great bands in Oakland on the Day On The Greens, I did see Skynyrd at Winterland in San Fran in March 76.
The keyboard player was classically trained pianist that was working as a roady for the band. At one show a piano was on stage and after doing his set up job sat down and started playing. Ronny said you are our keyboard player as of now.
What a time!! Grew up 3 exits from the Oakland Coliseum and "Day On The Green" concerts were the best! My very first concert was a year later in '78 on this same field. Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Foreigner, Pat Travers. Still have my $11.00 ticket stub!!
RIP to all of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who have all passed away with the exception of one of The Honkettes, Leslie Hawkins, and the drummer Artemus Pyle. Gimme Three Steps from the Knedworth Music Festival in 1976 is another great video from Skynyrd. 🙌✌️
Losing them was enough to make all of us cry, and we did. I remember how shocked everyone was upon hearing about the plane crash. It is one of those 'where were you' moments.
I grew up in that era and the concerts where great. From Cleveland Ohio in the 70s we had something called The world series of rock. Had 80,000 to 110,000 concert goers depending on the show. Loved it
First saw them in 1974 at Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia Missouri. I was sixteen and drove down from Chicago area with brother and a friend. Crowd was estimated several hundred thousand. It was three day event and the heat was scorching. Also appearing were Aerosmith, Eagles, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, REO Speedwagon, America, Charlie Daniels, Joe Walsh, Elvin Bishop and many others.
I just ran upon your channel and anyone that's reacting to my favorite band I always check em out and scrolled down and the next reaction was The Man SRV and he's one of my top 5 guitarist ever! So im subbing right now. And hey Girl I grew up back when these Legends were still alive and crying or shedding tears watching these people just speaks volumes to who you are and how real music touches you and moves you . Believe me I'm 58 and they're still time's I sit and cry and think WHAT IF ?
Saw them in Chicago.1976 Peter Frampton and gary. Wright opened, and Yes was playing on a different stage..amazing. first come first served. Me and friends were pretty fast. We got right in front of the stage. 120,000 people.
I was also at that same show. Hawthorne Park in Cicero. It was a blast had a large group of friends we staked out a good spot and spread out our blankets to hold our area. I don’t remember Yes being on a different stage though. Could have been the weed😅.
Great reaction, Skynyrd is a favorite. If you really want to get your mind blown, I highly recommend you react to Nightwish "Ghost Love Score" from the Wacken 2013 concert (over 82,000 + people)
I'm from Mississippi and not long ago had to travel to Louisiana for family. On the way back, I stopped at their memorial in Magnolia, Mississippi. It's in the middle of nowhere but about 1/4 mile from where the place actually crashed. There are 3 large, beautiful monuments and on one of them if Free Bird and that infamous first line, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?"
I got to see them live at Atlanta Pop in July 1970. Amazing! We had a small crowd of 400,000!!! "If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?" Tugs at my heart strings. Of course I still remember!!!
@@guyray1504 The second and last Atlanta pop fest was in Byron. They didn't play there either. Famous story about it though. Jimi Hendrix was chatting with Steve Vest. Told him how much he liked Lynyrd Skynyrd. Vest couldn't figure out how he had heard them since they didn't have an album out yet. He found out later that Jimi had been poking around in Duane Allman's private stash of music and heard an unreleased recording that Duane had because he was good friends with the band. At that time, Skynyrd was still playing in their back yard.
6:08 look how Ronnie is looking at the guitar and sings just as Gary plays. Then you can see just how it hits him a few seconds later. That's something you are just born with.
Freshman in high school..men were men, women were women...no phones...great time to be alive and coming of age...God the ladies were so beautiful then!
@Liz-go7xe Yep....cranking the great music, partying, and looking for the ladies...those summer nights in southwest Indiana...country roads, keg parties, great friends, cruising town in my GTO, and yes smoking some great southern Indiana home grown...huge buds bigger than your hand! Cops were pretty cool too..unless you were being a total ass they left us alone to have fun!
@Liz-go7xe Great I am sure, but I wouldn't trade where I was born and raised for any other place. I am retired in Arizona now, to be closer to my daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids in California, but I have to admit there are times I am miss southern Indiana.
There's a better live video of Free Bird recorded August 21st 1976, they were opening for the Rolling Stones in England and supposedly Mick Jagger said.... "how the hell do we follow that"
My favorite Band ! Everyone that is a fan of Skynyrd should visit plane crash site in Mississippi , I visited it a couple of years ago in middle of nowhere but a quiet peaceful place, they’ve raised Beautiful granite monuments in honor of Band and members who died ! I actually got to meet a couple of rescuers who helped pull members out’a plane in 1977 !!
Give Charlie Daniel's band the DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA, Meatloaf PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT. Reactors usually get some of their highest totals on these songs. I enjoyed your reaction
I remember in 8th grade getting high, relaxing, and jamming out to old school rock. It enhanced my high, I would just get lost in the music. Great song.
Hi folks, this is my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent here with you so I subscribed and left a like for you while I was here! I'm not sure I caught your names right, was it Sally and Geo? Anyway I'm Deb and I'll check back from time to time just to ask how you are doing, and how are you doing?
Hi, its Nanselly & Geo :) Nice to meet you Deb! We are doing great thank you very much for asking. How about yourself? I hope you have a great day today!
@@EFamilyMedia Nanselly and Geo, What interesting names you both have, is Geo short for George? Thank you for asking I am doing well, I was glad to hear that you are both well too. You have a great day as well. Deb
You asked if that was the way the song normally goes, or was it played different for the show... Skynyrd was a rarity among bands of the time...They charted their music, and played it almost note for note in their live shows. What you heard here is what you hear on the studio version.
This is one of the Day On The Green concert series in Oakland. My wife would get free tickets from her work. All day 3 or 4 bands. All were headliners. I think the tickets were like $10.
No one freaked out over the confederate flag and in all that crowd i saw one tattoo. Now there would be a protest over the flag and everyone would be covered in tattoos. But these days no one would be there because gen y and gen z do not seem to really like actual talent in playing music.
Yep...the ladies were so beautiful, and didn't need tattoos head to toe to be cool. Wait until they are 60 years old and those tattoos are wrinkled as hell. Glad I lived during this time...high school '77 to '81.
Saw the reference to Dubois Cointy Indiana...was born and raised in Princeton, IN (Arizona now). I used to work in Dubois County in the 1980s....but lived in Pike County....outside Petersburg...about halfway between town and the high school junction.
@@jeffwarren4938 well, at least you got out of indiana, thats always a good thing. Where did you work in dubois? I remember when the tornado went through petersburg. I went to the store and bought canned food to donate to the town, dropped it off at the drawbridge pizza place in jasper where they played the silent movies. I applied and went for a job interview at the power plant at petersburg, to run a coal loader, but then didnt take the job.
I worked at the old Kimball Stylemasters plant.. was on a TV cabinet line and worked in the machine shop. I have lived in many places, California, Arizona, etc.. but to be honest, I liked Indiana. I am 61 and retired a few years back and moved to Arizona to be closer to my daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids. They live in Orange County, CA. I quit Kimball over some issues and told them to kiss my ass...I went to I.U. and became a CPA for Ernst & Young. My in-laws were in Petersburg when the tornado hit, saw it the next day... was living in Chicago at the time. My wife and I like Arizona, and my wife was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles...it has gone to hell, though. We left California in 1997. I do have to say that I miss Indiana at times... I still have my mom, a brother, and Umpteen cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews in southwest Indiana.
yes, great. too bad that I was only 5 y.old at that time, my teen years were mostly in the 80's, so I went to shows mostly in the 80's & 90's, I went to Pink Floyd, AC-DC, U2, ZZ Top (once each), then Metallica (5 times between 1985 & last summer (2023), I could recommend 2 other live performances with total crazy crowds, but not related to Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's hard to believe a little over a month later the plane crashed 58 days to be correct and this dynasty was destroyed. When i heard about the crash on the radio i had just dropped my girlfriend off and was headed home. Immediately pulled over and said a prayer and cried all the way home hopping they all were ok. Found out the next morning the facts RIP RONNIE, Cassie, and Steve. WE love you and miss you. The MC at the end says it's hard to believe they guys are not from California. What a joke. Lynard Skyward is Jacksonville FL. proud and southern proud. No California band could ever accomplish this. I was lucky enough to see the originals 4 times before the crash.
Well Ed King was from southern California, played the lead guitar on Sweet Home Alabama...by the time of this video he had left the band due to the erratic and violent behavior going on during tours
