The bird sound is being done with the guitar. Gary Rossington used his slide to make the chirping sound.
@charlesray1130

Actually it is a slide whistle. You can see one of them playing it at the beginning. It's a chrome metal tube with a slider at the bottom. No finger holes, just a whistle.

Gary put a fret wire under the strings behind the first fret that helped with the harmonics of the chirp. You can see it sticking up in the video. When he switches to playing rhythm, it's been removed.@@jamber5150

I was at this concert 7/2/77, at age 22. It was a Bill Graham promoted "Day on the Green" event at the Oakland Coliseum. Every summer there were several shows of this type at the Coliseum, usually with 4 or 5 bands. For this one, the day started off with The Outlaws, then Santana. Lynyrd Skynyrd was next up, and then finally the headliner, Peter Frampton. Skynyrd stole the show, even though all 4 bands were very popular in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. A good amount of people left after Skynyrd finished, but Frampton followed with a good performance as well. One of the best concerts I ever attended. And 3 weeks later on July 24, I was back at the Coliseum again for the final Led Zeppelin concert every in the U.S. What a fantastic time to see live most of the greatest bands ever! Pretty much ever week of the year there was one or more top bands playing somewhere in the area. Bill Graham was a legendary concert promoter who organized all these shows. He died in a helicopter crash some years later. I'm sure someone in the comments here has already mentioned that Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed 3 1/2 months after this show, killing Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer; Steve Gaines, the guitar player with the beard; his sister Cassie, who was one of the female backup singers for the band. Also killed was a road manager for the band, and the plane's pilot and first officer.

@@rayj1011 No, the crowd knew how the song builds up to the long guitar solo, and they were just reacting to the solo getting closer and closer as the song progressed. And as others have said, the girls up front close to the stage were also there for Peter Frampton, who was somewhat of a heartthrob in those days.

I so agree. I was born in 1962 and spent a lot of time with my older brothers and his friemds. Girls back then were natural and pretty. Boys were boys and girls were girls. No phones, no fake boobs, no tats, no hog rings, no anger at the world, no resentment and man-hating, no anxiety and 25 other mental disorders. Just fun amd normal - and ready to party if you were halfway cool. :-) When I show these old clips to my own kids, they are like "man it seemed like such a better time than it is now." And they are right. It's worth being old now to have been young then. Cheers!

I always enjoy seeing the reaction of young people like you to this song. They usually are not prepared for the guitar solo(s) at the end. I would like to recommend that you also react to this song during a live performance in 1976 at Knebworth, England. Allen Collins, the guitarist in white in this video, was in rare form and the longer version of the solo was played. The lead singer had to stop the band in the end or they might still be playing today!

Ronnie told Allen and Gary to go on the tongue. Leon tried to go, but his bass cord wasn't long enough. No wireless instruments in 1977.
@WhizzingFish12
@WhizzingFish12 4 месяца назад
LOL Yes - Collins was in another world and Ronnie had to literally go up to him and touch his shoulder to bring him back to earth. And it's so funny when Ronnie pushed "his mules" out on the tongue in defiance of the Stones directions, then Leon's cord wasn't long enough and he almost unplugged his bass. Just as good to me is T for Texas from the same show - the 3 guitarists KILL it. They each get a great lead and hand off to each other, support each other, etc. LS was one of the truly greatest rock bands ever.

Ronnie Van Zant - vocals and leader of the band; Allen Collins - guitar; Gary Rossington - guitar; Steve Gaines - guitar; Artimus Pyle - drums; Leon Wilkeson - bass; Billy Powell - piano; Thier last performance was South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 19, 1977, Free Bird lasted for 20 mins The next day boarded their plane that was unsafe the Fuel gauge was broke. The only way to check the fuel was with a stick. The plane ran out of fuel the engines were burning to rich and wasting precious fuel. One engine shut down then the other did. The plane went down over pine trees killing the members of the band, Ronnie Van Zant lead singer, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, that day was the saddest day in Southern Rock. I was 20 when I heard about it on the radio. I cried like a baby. The song Free Bird was written by Allen Collins and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. It was inspired when Allen had a fight with his GF Kathy. She asked him if he would remember her if she left.
@nataliestclair6176
@nataliestclair6176 4 месяца назад
Steve Gaines was a great guitarist. He joined the band in 1976 at the request of his sister, Cassie who was a back up singer for the band. They needed a replacement guitarist after one left the band. Ronnie Van Zandt, as talented as he was, was a mean drunk amd drank a lot and he at times turned that temper on his band mates so some often left. He even broke one of his guitarist's fingers after a show becuase he was drunk and felt the guy didn't play that night. Ronnie was reluctant at first to have Steve Gaines join the band but gave in and allowed him to play on stage with the one night. Due to the loudness and the other guitars etc they really didn't get a good listen to how Gaines played, but the sound man did. After the concert the sound guy has Ronnie listen to the tape to hear Gaines better. That prompted Ronnie to let Gaines just jam with the band to better guage his playing. When they played Freebird, as the real test for Gaines, he did so well and kept up that Ronnie let him join the band. Gaines also at times co-wrote some songs and was co vocals on some songs like "You Got that Right". He impressed Ronnie so much that Ronnie said of Gaines, "We (meaning the band) will all be in his shadow one day." Sadly we never got to know if Ronnie's words were true or not since Steve and his sister and Ronnie and others died in that plane crash

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the first rock band my brother turned me on to when we were kids. He listened to their songs, non-stop, at one point. He passed away, in 2021. We were kids of a Jazz pianist/psych doctor who played with many greats (although his own vices kept him from stardom). He broke down different music styles and taught us to listen to everything possible. Skynyrd was one of the first and my brother gravitated to them, immediately.

They were so talented and so huge and had so many hits. And it's kind of a tragic story because in 1977 I believe, the plane crash happened and it killed some members and support people and severely injured others and it was highly traumatic and it essentially ended the band. It was just so sad. I was in junior high school and I love these guys so much. They have so many great songs, it's one of those few bands like the Beatles where I would also include Creedence Clearwater Revival in that, where they've got several albums and I literally like every song on every album that's the way Lynyrd Skynyrd is. They have a massive variety of styles that they can play in but still they always have that distinctive Lynyrd Skynyrd sound, Check out their huge hit Gimme Three Steps, which was based on a real life incident, and it's funny as hell but it's just a real banger.

Love your reaction. Though this version is highly recommended, I've always enjoyed the Knebworth '76 version more. Its not as polished as this version, but it plays the entire solo by Allen. The Oakland version cuts out about 2mins worth toward the end of Allen's solo. Also the Fox Theater (a live performancel, One More From the Road album) plays the entire solo as well.There are two recording from Fox, from two different nights. Unfortunately, tragedy would occur a few months later after this Oakland performance. Last original member, Gary( making the bird sound) passed away last. But their music lives on for all us and future generations to enjoy. Thanks for giving a listen to this Classic.
