Literally, people were going "THOSE DARN KIDS AND THEIR BOOKS, NO ONE TALKS ANYMORE BECAUSE OF BOOKS, IT IS RUINING SOCIETY".

I am 64 years old and was 17 just out of high school when I was there at this concert. It was on July 23, 1977 at the Oakland Colliusm. I lived an hour south of Oakland and saw many Day on the Greens at the colliusm. Tickets were only like $11 dollars and you got to see two or three bands in one day. Most of those people in the crowd are grandparents and great grandparents now. Those were good times. Thanks for the reaction.

Yes, Right On! I was a teenager then and we accepted all clothing and hair styles considering them "cool" even if it wasn't exactly what we wore. Being judgemental was a huge turn off and we didn't look at money and material things very much. So long as we had what we needed, it was just fine! This band is from my home town of Jacksonville, Florida, and most of them are buried here. I've been to their graves to pay my Respects. We are very Proud of them here. I wish you could hear all of the stories of this band!

Ronnie Van Zant, lead singer here with Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1948-1977. What a waste, dead at the age of 29. Those two guitarists were possessed in this performance. Sublime.

Not long after this concert they had a plane crash and we lost Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines and Steve’s sister. Such a massive loss to the music world

When I watch videos of concerts and see all those beautiful young people I always wonder what they look like today because in reality they are now old enough to be grandparents. I'm 67 so this is my people and yes we had the best music because it was only about the music. Peace!

Probably the greatest guitar band in history, and certainly the greatest Southern Rock band in history. And Skynyrd could actually play in concert what they played in the studio. Even back in the 1960s and 70s that was not at all common. They practised _a lot!_ Better days!

There's a reason we're still listening to this music 46 years later. IT WAS GOOD MUSIC. No auto tune. You had to have talent. Each individual member exuded talent. I don't see that in today's music. It all sounds the same. It's crap.

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. They had lots of great songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama", "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special" etc.

These young ladies and men in the audience are now grandparents. This was at the LA coliseum back in (1977) some 47 years ago. They were the opening act for Peter Frampton. What they did here was outperform Peter Frampton at his own concert. They were awesome! They were a Florida High School Band from Lee County where their Physical Education Coach was named Lynyrd Skinner. Some of the band members died in a plane crash. Great reaction by this lovely couple.

I was fortunate enough to see Skynyrd at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in 1977. I was 16 and my girlfriend was 14. There were 110K people in attendance. The lineup that day was the J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts with Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. At that time Frampton had the biggest selling album in the world. Skynyrd was absolutely incredible. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Thanks for the memory.

The piano player, Billy Powell, really stands out on another Lynyrd Skynyrd track called "Call Me The Breeze" that I hope you check out. Lynyrd Skynyrd defined my youth during the time of their rise throughout their careers. Their plane crash was devastating to all of us, and we felt like a part of us died along with them. I've even named 2 awesome dogs "Skynyrd" and the last one just passed this year. There will be a Skynyrd III for sure! Keep on rocking Southern Style! ✌️

This was one of THE iconic live performances of the 70s and also one of the most poignant as a few months later Ronnie Van Zant , Steve Gaines and his sister backing sister and 3 others would be dead - killed after the band's plane crashed in Missippi as they were travelling between gigs

Lynnyrd Skynnyrd , I grew up in the 60's, and 70's. From childhood, then becoming a teenager, and a young man. One constant through the years was music. I was always amazed how talented the musicians were. The dreams and energy those performers provided what seemed to be endless. Looking back I wouldn't change any of it. It truly were the best of times. Over the years I've seen around 40 Bands,and 30 concerts. Events I loved them all. It was the thousands of music lovers that made concerts undescribably great. Now that the years have past. All the great songs have survived, and are so truly timeless. Rock on you two, ✌️🎼🎵🎶....

You are absolutely correct-the difference between now and then. I can tell you that one huge difference is the musicians-they played actual musical instruments and the singers actually sang live, without auto-tune. And then there is the audience-they actually watched the show, no cameras, no phones. Regarding life in the 70's, everyone still had ups and downs, good times, hard times. But music...we did live in one of the best times for music ever. As for this song, it's a masterpiece classic, one of the best rock tunes ever written.

Their 1976 performance at Knebworth is actually my favorite version of Free Bird. They played an hour and it was a fantastic hour. I recently bought the video on Amazon and it's amazing! The lead singer, Ronnie, the guitarist in the red pants and his sister, a backup singer all died in a plane crash a few months after this performance. The other band members suffered severe injuries as well. The drummer, Artemis Pyle is the only remaining member alive from this lineup. Ronnie's brother, Johnnie put together much like a tribute band with the same name later.

Krásná reakce, také následná diskuze o tom, co je důležité pro mladé dnes... 👍 Já upřímně nejsem člověk na takové masové akce, už předem si říkám "kam půjdu v tom davu na WC?"... 😆 Ale sledovat ten koncert a tu atmosféru v té době je prostě fascinující, jsem rád, že to dnes mohu přes PC shlédnout - naživo bych tehdy neměl šanci, nebylo mi ani 15 let a navíc za železnou oponou...🤪 Beautiful response, also the subsequent discussion about what is important for young people today... 👍 I'm honestly not one for such mass events, I'm already thinking beforehand "where will I go to the toilet in that crowd?"... 😆 But watching that concert and the atmosphere at that time is just fascinating, I'm glad I can watch it today via PC - live I wouldn't have had a chance back then, I wasn't even 15 years old and behind the Iron Curtain...🤪

React to The Ballad Of Curtis Loew by Lynyrd Skynyrd! That was a great reaction to a great song! Freebird was their Encore song and this concert was just months before the plane crash! You are right the Lynyrd Skynyrd band members were great people. I knew them well and spent time with them after the plane crash!

I turned 17 that summer. Skynyrd was my favorite band. I remember listening to the radio in my 68 GTO when I got the news of the plane crash. And the end of a great summer (Star Wars, Smokey and the Bandit) came to an end. I had seen them only once. But I had all their records. And yeah we were all so much healthier then. No hfcs and steroids in our food. We didn't know about AIDS and sex wasn't as risky back then. So when you hear about the era of "free love" that's when they were talking about, that 2 decade window between the birth control pill and aids. People weren't as uptight and isolated like they are now. They weren't being gaslit by demagogues on tv and internet either. People with a vested interest in dividing and conquering us.

I am 59 Years old. I graduated High School in 1982. I am so glad I grew up in a Golden Era of Music during the 60's 70's and 80's. Great Artists from many Genres were on the Radio, There was also the Oldies Station that played music from the 50's. The Artists would cross Genres and write Songs for each other and perform together. It was about the Music for the Artists. We would all party together. It was great at School dances and Parties and Roller Skating.

The 70's were a much simpler time. At this time in life I would be driving around the California mountains on weekends in my orange with black striped 1970 1/2 Camaro Z28 RS with Freebird blaring from my 6x9 Jensen speakers. Thanks for reacting to it.

I was also at this concert. As they did at the Rolling Stones concert, they totally outperformed the headliners. The energy in the Coliseum was insane! Young, free, wild, and crazy in those days. As with so many things, young people today will never get to experience what we took for granted. To quote Oliver Alexander, "It's a damned shame what the world's gotten to".

"Free Bird" is half gentle break-up song (boyfriend leaving a girlfriend, no name-calling or thrown blame) and half a rocketing away once freedom is obtained. Glad you two chose the live version; while the album cut is perfectly fine and feels a bit "thicker" because of board mastery, but the Oakland version has such a massive ending instead of a simple fade-out like the studio version. The smiles on your faces tells how much you enjoyed the energy you felt, especially that supplied by the crowd -- definitely an act unto itself!

The lead singer is wearing a Neil Young "Tonight's the Night" Tee Shirt. People said that there was a Feud between them (there wasn't, Neil offered them the song "Powderfinger" to record, but they didn't) but they did do a song call out in "Sweet Home Alabama.

I just found y'all today and have been binge watching all day. I just want to say that you two are the epitome of what music reactors should be. You actually listen to everything about a song with such enthusiasm and interest. Not to mention your deep and emotional reactions. It was so fun growing up in the 70s listening to amazing music all day after school, summers, weekends. The music was incredible and the concerts so amazing. Pink Floyd, Skynyrd, CSN, Stones, Who, Fleetwood Mac, Yes, just a blast at massive stadiums and arenas.

The way you talked about "today's" music is so true. There are are three types, Artists, Performers and Entertainers. Today's shows seem to focus more on the performance/entertainment value. The true greats are the Artists that can just stand on stage and blow you away... You don't need to watch the show, You get pulled in and immersed in the song.

GREAT Reaction and wise words. If you, continually, chase £££$$$ then once you achieve your goal, most people accept their new situation as their "norm" so it is no longer special. The really good thing about having money is that you don't have to worry and stress about money. I am 69 years old in London and delighted I lived in much simpler times with no mobile phones(which, of course, have their uses) but many younger people are obsessed with them and struggle to communicate with other people in this technological age. No phones in the crowd,in those days,as everyone just concentrated on the vibe and music.

Dominica you put so very well on another reaction. The music back in the day had an "ESSENCE." That is the perfect word to capture what was happening with the music back then. I 68, cut my milk teeth to the Beatles and heard everything thereafter with wonder and amazement at the astonishing music from those edays.

In a few months after this concert, the lead singer, a vocalist and one of the guitarists would be dead. The rest would be damaged for life. I also saw you cry for SORROW. There’s a reason you’re at a loss for words for Pink Floyd. David Gilmour doesn’t need a guitar. The music in his brain goes straight to the amplifier. Nothing slows it down. Not one wasted move. The only guitarist in the world that never breaks a sweat. He’s in a class by himself and THEY (collectively) will NEVER be equaled. Kids have no clue what they missed.

Life was so much more simpler back then, before mobile phones and greed. The fans got involved as one and not only enjoyed the show but appreciated who they came to see.

I saw them perform this at an all day outdoor festival at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1974. I still get goosebumps when I watch this video. I have requested my family find a way to play this at my wake as I become a "Free Bird". The 1970s was the best time to be young and free!

They were in a plane crash 3 and a half months after this this video was filmed. They left Greenville SC and crashed,I was at their last concert the night before the plane crash.this was the last song that night. I get emotional when I see this, it brings back memories of that night.

watching your big smiles gave me a real lift. I was 17 years old when this concert took place, but I didn't know about it at the time. It took years before I found out I loved southern rock music, and I would have loved to be in this audience as someone in my late 20s, as that would have been better than if I had seen it at 17.

I got to see them around this time. It was an amazing concert. It was indoors, but when the instrumental started, the crowd jumped to their feet. R.i.p. the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who are no longer with us. Your music lives on.

It was just a few months before the crash. Still hits me hard it's so ironic the first lines of the song. "If I leave here tomorrow will you still remember me"?This is the year I went to basic training and started living. Although I did miss out on these concerts. Elvis Presley died the day I was in basic on family day, had KP Duty listening to the radio and we heard the news that Elvis was dead. Yeah that was a rough year.

There was no selfies, no cameras, no people on cell phones - you went to a concert with blue jeans and your best tee shirt. Real music played by musicians. And, SUCH GREAT bands that were not corporate owned. Some were, but there were so many artists and labels that unusual bands got through. MTV also allowed artsy bands like the Talking Heads and Blondie (for example) to get showcased. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and went to alot of concerts and loved it all! BTW, the use of the Confederate flag by them represented their loyalty to the South (they are from there) and the band has come out to state that they do not associate it with slavery and the KKK, There were (and are) some that want to cancel them over this.
