He's the King of rock to me brother. I have lived 5 miles from the crash site a little over 40 years. I remember we were watching TV with those Rabbit Ears antenna's,that if lucky you could get 4 stations most of the time but you could get 3 all the time here in South West Mississipp,i and it popped up on the screen a plane had crashed and where. My Family and I jumped in our car and went to see if they needed help. They didn't say what kind of plane or who it was we thought of it being a Passenger Plane with over 100 people on it. I was only 8yrs old and stood on that dark country road with my grandma and remember watching the people coming out of those dark woods by seeing their old time head lamps on with a stretcher and they would put someone in the Ambulance and head back into the dark woods again. Our Sheriff we had known for years says it was a smaller plane and they had more than enough people. We pulled off the shoulder and ended up behind all the Ambulances until we go to PP Wilson Rd as it's called now,it was called Slaughterhouse road because they had a slaughter house not far from it. It was the next day that we found out it was Lynyrd Skynyrd. Even at 8yrs old I listened to their music with my aunt and uncle that were in their teens at the time and I remember telling them Play that Alabamy song again. They are the reason I picked up my first guitar because I love Gary's playing and it was an acoustic and my little hands could barely fit the neck. I finally got to where I could play it with blisters and blood on my fingers and strings. I wore out 3 or 4 Gold and Platinum Cassettes playing along with them. I am on my 4th guitar now and play nothing but Skynyrd Songs, plus other bands like Nirvana and the 90's stuff. But I have Gary to thank for me building my fingers up and I love the smell of that Finger-Ease nothing like it in the world.
Mike Murphy I was 4 years old standing up on my brother's 50- something Thunderbird's car seat and as we pulled into the gas station/grill off the highway I remember hearing on the radio "Buddy Holly dies in Plane Crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. " It was a gray day with light snow flurries. I said what does die mean? He Said 'it's like a bird that flies away and doesn't come back. " We are all tied together my friend. I bet Steve Vest even feels it.
Hey brother Steve , was there ever a time that you /Skynyrd / or the allmans played down in volusia or Seminole counties. I know that the allmans grew up in Daytona beach , did they ever play in DeLand , FL or Sanford , FL ???
I don't know Steve Vest but I like his Skynyrd stories. I was recently wondering what happened to him also. I hope that Steve is well. Maybe his cameraman/producer will tell us how Steve is doing?
