How wonderful to hear their voices again! Ronnie and the guys were mostly mellow and were very polite, thoughtful, Southern gentlemen. I got to meet them when they came in to Capricorn Studio, where I worked, to record Gimme Back My Bullets. I expected unruly, rowdy, headache sort of guys. Not in the least. Met Dean Kilpatrick and Tom Dowd too. It was a pleasure! They had impeccable manners and were alot of fun. They are in my heart ♥️ forever.
Beautifully stated Miss Jolene. While LS (particularly RVZ) certainly had a reputation for fighting in bars & trashing hotel rooms, most of that was nonsense, put out by Record company PR guys as a publicity ploy to generate more interest & sell more Albums. However, being very familiar with a real Southern rasing, a real Southern Man simply doesn't act a rowdy fool around Women folk, unless that Man is hankering for a serious ear yank'n from his Momma! 😉 Working where you worked & at the time you worked there, must have been very exciting for you. You must have some great memories! 😎👍
It’s sad that Dean was one of the 6 killed in the plane crash. I too was wondering if you could give an account to the experience of meeting Ronnie in particular or any further accounting of your encounter with anyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd during that time you met with them?
I wanna hear the audio tapes from Rainbow theater. I wish they encouraged ppl to record their performances like grateful dead. I also wish they captured video footage more. You look at even lesser known bands of the time, they have quality footage etc And these guys couldnt get some dudes to follow them around with decent camera??? Even Fox Theater, they decided NOT to Film it, bc it would be more nerve wracking bc they were doing the audio. Why not record it for the hell of it! No need to release it if it sucked!! You know?? Cmon guys!!
Ronnie is an extremely smart man. His bpm seems about 60. He absorbs the rep, and expands. Called out Otis, which is the epitome of Southern Rock in his way.
What an awesome interview Hearing Steve n Ronnie talking about Skynyrd and their Knebworth show is priceless. .... Thanks man for the upload. .... I've listened to this one 5 times already. The UK 77 tour was one of Skynyrd ' s best ..... The British kids calling in to the radio station are just excellent too.... Great upload
If only... and can you imagine how Ed King must have felt about Steve Gaines dying in the crash? To know that could/should have been him if things went differently would not be easy to get along with I can tell you that much
Milemaker 1963 If I could go back in time, I would buy me a high powered hunting rifle, go to the airport, shoot the tires on that plane, turn the rifle on the pilots and tell them to take the rest of the day off, then I would point the rifle at Mr. Bigshot Ronnie Van Zandt and tell him to back up 3 steps or more and RUN!!!
@@rrrttt1112 that's what I was wondering. After reading Ron Eckerman's book I am not sure. They looked so much alike, even their hair & both stayed stoned a lot of the time. Steve was the most straight of the bunch & they barely talked to him. It does kinda sound like Allen from interview w/RCB, I know that was Allen obviously but hard to tell on this one
Yes absolutely terrible pilots for sure. They did pay for it with their lives, but they also took 6 people with them, plus permanently altered a lot of people's lives. Another one was Andrew Aycock, who was flying the Beechcraft Bonanza that crashed and killed Randy Rhoads, and Rachel Youngblood. Aycock was killed as well, it was a senseless crash that should never have happened.
This is 1st time I have ever heard Steve's speaking voice I believe. I know he was a hell of a singer, guitar player & song writer, this was probably best they had ever been & who knows where it would have lead them
Ronnie was an intuitive and insightful man. He was always aware of what was going on and was the band's taskmaster. Political office would have been the only thing left for him to do had he lived and even then he would have snubbed such suggestions. RIP Ronnie
He was a real leader. And knew the value of self discipline, in making music anyway. He was knuckling down on the drinks and drugs too when we lost him.
Some dope actually made the decision... that this 'already quite difficult to hear' audio of a rare and priceless interview with members of the legendary rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, really needed some way too loud, limp-ass crappy muzak, washing all over it... making it even harder to hear!!! What is it with these knuckleheads?! Why do they always DO THAT?!!!!
To bad it wasn't standard to have visual video recordings of interviews and studio time. I sure would love to have seen more of my favorite band skynyrd. Only if I where born a few decades earlier.
@dan mcgrath alot of their ideas came from trippin on,shrooms and bein stoned. So some of their success if probably because they was using drugs and drinkin.
Well Allen Collins was what he was ..... for sure abuse but this is what it was. Also one of the one greatest guitarists ever. Make no mistake dude was integral to their sound.....
Caller: Are there any tracks that stand out apart from Freebird? Allen: I didn't understand you Caller: Are there any tracks that stand out? Allen: Uh, Freebird Caller: Apart from that. Allen: Uh... yeah, the first album Caller: Any tracks from it? Allen: Uhh, I didn't understand you Host: He means are there any tracks that stand out for you Allen: Uh, on what album?
@@darceeslack8804 booyaw, if he woulda tAlkd like me, in said, hey Allen whatcha thanks yalls best song basides freebird? Then Allen mighta said, ah she ut, lemme see, howbout ' ask me no questions and I want tell you no lies. Allen is a legend, whoever the greatest guitarist of all time is, that's a matter of opinion, but who can play that freebird lead , Excatcly the same way every time? I worked with some lady's that had worked with his mom, and they said he would come into the cigar factory and see hismom, but would make it around to see many of them and would ask how they were, and laugh and cut up with them, they said he was the sweetest of them all. ALLEN COLLINS. LEGEND.
That and people from the South are generally more laid back than other parts of the country. I worked at Capricorn Studio, so in Georgis i think the hot summer months kind of make a person adapt to the weather with a slower pace. The benefit is less stress. People carried that into their daily lives the rest of the year. You find time to smell the roses. Enjoy the little things in life that alot of people miss in the rush and hurry elsewhere. And lastly, Ronnie and the guys WERE mostly mellow and were very polite, thoughtful gentlemen. I got to meet them when they came in to record Gimme Back My Bullets. I expected unruly, rowdy, headache sort of guys. Not in the least. Met Dean and Tom Dowd too. It was a pleasure! They had impeccable manners and were alot of fun..
basically the interviewer asked if the band ever got tired of Freebird,,,, lol..... that song made them more money than any other, it galvanized them as a instant classic band and threw them into full blown stardom.
Be damned just bring back a lot of memories of the southern rock and roll I listened to mayport Florida I used to go out to Weston Jacksonville or to Jacksonville Beach on 1st Street and listen to this group jam back in the seventies man do I miss these guys
There one of the few bands you can listen to the album it’s all good music you can listen to everything on the album to Wishon bands I got a run to the song and I Noel November all right that’s it was a shit what the what the fuck I do nothing right for that shit I threw
They didn’t come back out after free bird because Ronnie Van Zandt has said it before no song they have ever wrote and can top the ending a freebirds ended.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Really appreciate the chance to hear this interview. Skynyrd played 3 nights at the Rainbow Theatre in London, Jan 27, 28 & 29, 1977. So putting all the clues in this recording together w/ that fact means this interview was conducted on Jan 26, 1977, on Capital London (formerly Capital Radio) for anyone who might have wondered about those details. Also, they had just played 5 shows in Japan the third week in Jan before heading to the UK, w/ the final Tokyo show occurring on Jan 21, 1977. I have no idea if the band went back to the US before heading out for the 22 dates they were to play in the UK, but either straight from Japan to Britain or from Japan-to-USA-to-Britain, these guys had plenty of reasons to be jet-lagged, stoned, or most likely a heavy combination of both!
Gary had Allen beat. I thought Gary was dumber than a box of rocks when i met him. Later on i heard he was in his "Prince Charming" mode. Not too coherent on the 'ludes.
As a Londoner, Capital was my local radio station and I think the dozy sounding interviewer is "Little" Nicky Horne. As for the incident with the police boxing team, Skynyrd were staying at the Royal Lancaster Hotel where the Metropolitan (London) Police boxing team were having their annual dinner and a fight started in which Gary and Artimus were both apparently beaten unconscious.
Pleasantly surprised to hear that Ronnie Van-Zant comes across as a rather quietly spoken, deep and considerate young artist'. I was kind of expecting to hear a rough and tumble long haired good'ole boy... quite the opposite! As for Allen Collins... well, he was no doubt a crackin guitar player... no doubt about that, but as a studio guest, about as useless as balls on a crowbar.
There another video on this channel called "Gary explains artimus got beat up at the policemans ball". I have a feeling its referencing the same incident.
Oh man,I'm saving this for tonight so I can listen without any distraction. I thought I'd heard all of Ronnie in interviews. Thanku who did this I subscribed as well.
