Dicky Betts once said I would have preferred they called us a progressive band from the south , that said Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for the Allman Brothers , and Duane told Ronnie you need to rehearse at least 10 hrs a day if you want to make it., Ronnie took this to heart and they rehearsed 14 hrs a day , thats why when you see them live they play their songs exactly like the album , nuff said
@TheSteveSteele
@TheSteveSteele 4 месяца назад
Let’s be honest, they play their songs exactly like the album because they’re simple songs. Their music isn’t hard to play and there isn’t much room for improvisation. It’s great music no doubt. The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Tuesday’s Gone, Working for MCA, Saturday Night Special and Whisky Rock a Roller are very good tunes. Ed King and Stave Gains were very good guitarists, and Billy Powell was a fine pianist. But the songs are simple.

Growing up in the South during this era, and having 6 older brothers, I could say a lot ... but then I'll just let you all think whatever you want. The fact is, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the quintessential "working man's" band. They didn't need fireworks, flame throwers, and destruction of instruments to gain fame or attention. They just wrote and played music the common people could relate to - just like Hank Williams and just like Merle Haggard - and that is what made them famous and beloved. And yes, I am a musician. Its our job to create music that you enjoy, that touches you in some way, that brings laughs and tears, not because we have some "mystical power", but because we are just like you. We have feelings, emotions, hopes and fears, ambitions and dreams - just like you. The Confederate flag Skynyrd used wasn't used by the group as a symbol of racial biases. It was used as a symbol of defiance and rebellion to "the powers that be", and Watergate does not bother me, does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth. And just like the American flag, those colors don't run either. That's all I got to say about that.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the only band to write about life in laymen`s terms yet put it to very well practiced disciplined music that NEVER changed. My wife asked me once, "what makes them so well liked, they didn't even have a no 1 hit"? I told her it was because they never changed and were always there. Go into a bar, one song at least was played, go to a party, one song at least played, go hang out at a gravel pit, you heard at least one album. No matter where you went, they were there. They were "real" in an era where music was very diverse, very abstract, and very competitive. They sang to the point and without hesitation, made no apologies for themselves and just like Waylon said in "Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys", If you don't understand him, and he don't die young, he`ll probably just ride away. Skynyrd fit that to a T, Van Zant died young, the rest just rode away. They were taken from us, fate basically force us to accept their departure, with no true reasons why, no stopping it if we wanted, just at a snap of a finger, they were gone. It was a mystery of how to many, for years until the internet many people never even saw them play live, other than what they had seen on album covers, they had a fascination of what that rough honky-tonk sounding force singing was really like on stage and off. I think to many the band and especially Van Zant was like a phantom, music and songs that never stopped, but who were they? Where are they? The first time I saw footage of Ronnie on stage the hair on my neck stood up, and I had butterflies in my stomach. I finally had a face with a voice while in action. I'd always figured him as a big man, which baffled me to find he was only 5.8 tops, my own height, but that's because he sounds so much bigger. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe you all will laugh at me, but I listened to Skynyrd from age 10 or so, my brother had Pronounced, and later wed play one more for/from the road at night when going to bed. My grandparents on both sides owned taverns, so I was raised in a honkytonk. I always admired Ronnies voice and how he sounded like a honky tonker to me. But the driving force of Skynyrd after all I could learn about them was discipline, which was found in practice, never changing the way a song was made, and songs that anyone could relate to or at least know exactly what the song was about. To me, Skynyrd was REAL. What you saw, what you heard, was what you got, and what they were......

I saw Skynyrd several times around the Central, Fla. area. The last time was their second to last show it was at the Lakeland Civic Center. Artimus did kick his drum kit over in the middle of a song and got into it with Gary Rossington. The band didn't stop the song and the roadies worked the whole time putting the drums back together. Before the song was over, Artimus sat back behind the kit and they finished the song. Oct 18th, 1977.

Regarding Freebird, a couple of weeks ago I watched an older interview with Gary Rossington who spoke about the writing of Freebird. He said that Allen Collins had written the beginning chords of the song a couple of years before Allen and Ronnie Van Zant co-wrote the song. The line “If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me” was, according to Gary, said to Allen by his girlfriend and future wife. Also per Gary some of the chords on the slide guitar at the beginning of the song were played by Allen in the studio recording and later those parts were played by Gary.

Is kind of 'funny' listening to a British person narrating a documentary about a band like Lynyrd Skynyrd. No offense, the narrator's are just too..... I dunno, ...'proper' and 'polite'. But it doesn't matter, they are paying tribute to what was probably the absolute best band to ever come out of the South. The info is, as they would say, 'Spot on', which is all that matters. This world lost such a treasure when 'The Freebird' fell to the ground on October 20th, 1977, but like every thing else American and Great, it just dusted itself off and rose again. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd!!

I know every word to every song from the original (Ronnie era) version of the band. Ronnie really had something to say with his lyrics and these British guys seem to have a better understanding of his words than most people do these days. Listen carefully to the guy's explanation of Sweet Home Alabama from 22:38 through 25:32 for example. He has a real appreciation for what the true meaning of the song is. The original band was a hard rocking, hell raising, bunch of badasses who created the greatest music of all time in a way that's true to who they were. Ronnie's lyrics taught me that you can be a real man and still be a good guy.

Only thing I don’t get about what this British guy has to say is that the issues of segregation and slavery and the KKK were not as he says “far right” ideas; they were actually ideas from the Southern democrats who were on the idealogical Left. Republicans actually supported civil rights and desegregation.

Ronnie Van Zant wrote essentially anti-gun lyrics as in "Saturday Night Special" -very strange for someone's persona supposed to be "Southern-Rebel-Rugged-Independent" type. He was a bully and a mean drunk who assaulted people, inculding his own band members.

I see a lot of similarities between Ronnie Van Zant and Joe Elliott of Def Leppard in the way the both of them ran their respective bands. Both came from blue collar backgrounds, real alpha male types, and saw their roles as frontmen as "gang leaders" to some extent. Ronnie and Joe were both all about discipline and wanted to prove something to the rock world, driven to the point of literally "beating" their band members into shape
