The backstory for this song why it's created is because the singer's grandmother died the same time as one of his guitarists' mother and they made the lyrics by sharing stories and creating a song

Being 62 now and raising 3 boys in the Texas farmlands, I am beyond impressed seeing how this song impacts you, just like it does the rest of us. My own mother (Rest her soul) gave me this same message in 1971 when we were very poor. I listened, and I passed it on to my boys. I find peace in knowing my sons will do the same. It's a message, it's a ballad, It's a moral culture. Those that tear up actually get it.

Pure emotion was my reaction the first time I heard that song so many years back and now, at 66 years old, I still get that same feeling.... and I still feel every time we cover it in our band. There are times I struggle with the vocals as it really hits home so hard when I think of my own two children. His mother was a very wise lady. Just as mine was too.

My mom raised me on these exact words, I've lived a simple life not wanting anything that was out of my reach. She raised me to be happy with what I had but if I wanted something more don't be afraid to work for it. Before my mom died in 13 I went to see her and had the most honest talk with her that we ever had. I thanked her for The many adventures we went on and I thanked her for the quiet times. I think they're for teaching me honor, respect and patience. And then I thanked her for my life.... She died 2 months after that. But I'm glad for that final talk

That is a rabbit-hole both need to go down. LS coined the term Southern-Rock! Most of there songs that Ronnie sang were not written down , at least not by him, just sayin'. Not only that but Charlie Daniels and him were very good friends. Charlie Daniels wrote about Ronnie. The song was Reflections. Very somber song with a lot of emotions!

Lynyrd Skynyyrd led the way for the Southern Rock genre of the 1970's. The years where they peaked in popularity and recorded their best songs and albums was from 1973-1977. After the tragic plane crash in 1977, the band did re-form 10 years later but without Ronnie Van Zant, who was their lead singer and wrote their most classic songs, they were never the same. "Simple Man" is one of their best songs. Other great Lynyrd Skynyrd songs for you to react to are "Freebird", "Sweet Home Alabama", "What's Your Name", and "Thar Smell". Out of the songs I mentioned, the next Skynyrd song I think you should react to is Freebird. It is considered their signature song and a rock masterpiece.

Ladies Current band named Shinedown done an excellent cover of this classic. Interesting note is that Shinedown played at local bar owned by the widow of Ronnie Van Zandt (who died with some other members in tragic plane crash) in Jacksonville, Florida (hometown of Lynyrd Skynyrd). As both of you going thru rabbit hole of the band, backstory of the band. Back in late 60's to early 70's, members of the band were in local high school in Jacksonville, Florida. Back then, men worn long hair in sort of a protest of the war in Vietnam. They had long hair, and local coach named Leonard Skinner who was a hard ass to those who violate the rules in high school. Skinner hated men with long hair. They were in trouble with him all the time. Then members started a band and playing at local clubs. They wanted to create name for their band. Then as a protest to Coach Skinner, they called themselves as Lynyrd Skynyrd, play on his name. But LS gotten well-known, and they kept the name. Many years later, both band and Coach Skinner mend fences. They invited Coach Skinner onstage with them at a concert. Coach Skinner is mentioned at Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Ronnie Van Zant (and his co-writer on this song, Gary Rossington) grew up on the poor streets of Jacksonville FL in the 1950's. They knew hard times and lived some hard times as well. Ronnie was inspired to right this song upon the death of his grandmother. Don't get me wrong from my next statement, I'm a father and my own father was present for all of my formative years (and beyond). The presence of father's is critically important to the healthy and normal growth of a child. But it's MOTHERS (and grandmothers, etc.) who form the core and the soul of a FAMILY.

So much depth and storytelling its is hard to know where to start so i suggest Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb (Pulse 1994) as it links the guitarist David Gilmour to Kate Bush whom he mentored when she was an unknown.
