These are the lyrics to Shinedown's song "45". It is one of my favorite songs.
I am in no way affiliated with them, this is just a fan video :)
LYRICS
----------
Send away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
One not simply, so absurd
In these times of doing what you're told
You keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high up on the shelf, meant for you, no one else
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Everyone's pointing their fingers
Always condemning me
And nobody knows what I believe
I believe
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
And I'm Swimming through the ashes of another life
And theres' no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
45
45
Staring down the barrel of a 45

I lost my sister and father to a car accident on Christmas and haven't stopped crying everyday because of how much I loved them both. I turn to this song for comfort and to try to move forward in life. I've done it before and you can too. I believe in you and you need to aswell. Stay safe.

I know you can get through it. I know what it feels like to lose people so close to you. The longing to see them again will never truly go away, so its best to cherish the time you did have with them. Its great that music has been able to help you, thats why its the most powerful form of entertainment imo. My condolences, and best of luck to you.

Brent Smith stated in an interview that this song is "basically about the day you wake up and look at yourself in the mirror and decide to become comfortable in your own skin, and realize that you’re gonna have to make yourself happy before you’re going to make anyone else happy." He also said that the 45 "isn't an actual term for a gun, I used it as a metaphor for the world." At the end of the discussion of the song, he said it was mostly about moving on during a tough time.

Only way i can think of is 45 was thw year ww2 ended and with this having to do with ones personal messes and issues which everyone globally holds and coming to terms and the end of it all. Defeating that negativity in your life youve dealt for years as we defeated and ended the war that was causing global turmoil and personal ones as well.

Did you know this song is not actually about suicide? It is said in an interview of the singer that the song is about waking up one day, and finally realizing that you want to feel comfortable in your own skin, and that the 45 is not a real gun, but actually the world and what it hands you. The more you know am I right?

To all the people down on life out there, take it from me, it does get better but things will always be hard. Don't hope that someday things will be easier just hope that soon you will be able to manage and handle the stress of life more effectively. i know how you feel when I was younger I was the same I got out of the Marines about 4 years ago when I got home I found out that my soon to be fiance was leaving me for another man and was taking my daughter Nozomi with her and because I had just been discharged I didn't have much money barely enough to rent an apartment and feed myself sadly because of my lack of useful skills in any work environment I couldn't hold down a job for very long the only thing keeping me from ending it then and there was my daughter i was only allowed to see here 4 days a month but it was the only joy I had left and I was grateful for the time I was given but one day I was evicted from my apartment and left on the streets because of that I could no longer see my daughter whatsoever after a month of living on the streets I was finished I climbed to the top of the biggest bridge I could find and I jumped the whole way down my life flashed before my eyes and I hit the water as I was gasping for my last breath I bashed my head on something and was knocked out but somehow I woke up a week later laying in a hospital bed I thought to myself the day i jumped i have to die what else can I do I have nothing everything i loved was taken away form me i can't live another day, but the day I awoke I knew that I had to live no mater what the reason I can't die today or anytime soon after another month of hell on the streets after i was saved I got a good job and even got a house because of this the judge finally gave me privileged to my daughter again but instead of 4 days I get half the month and as if last month i have full custody of my girl so trust this from an older wiser generation everything can get easier but for that to happen your gonna go straight to the doors of hell and choose to take the easy way and go right through that door or if you turn around and you swim back up that river it may be hard, but one day it will pay off, but don't get me wrong it won't be the land of milk and honey but trust me your load will be lightened John I'll tell you now your not at the top just yet so swim with all your might and one day you'll get there so take care of yourself and remember life can always get better you just gotta keep faith that anything can happen.

+MattOutt64 That's... Really something. Your plight has not gone unrecognized my friend. I have no family... They were terrible people who want nothing to do with me and it's mutual. Without getting into details I was a homeless teenager, still in highschool and all. I've had to sleep outside, in the cold, I've had to starve and go without bathing for weeks, I didn't learn to drive till I was in my twenties. The list goes on, but I was completely hopeless and was sure death would've been a sweet release for a long time. But one day I just woke up with the will to continue, one day things started to make sense. I moved around different houses and other families, eventually solidifying a place with a close friend I have, still live with him lol. I ended up graduating and getting a good job with health insurance and an IRA. My parents and family see me out and about sometimes but it's just like we're strangers... Sometimes life just has different plans for you.

When I was really little, my dad used to constantly play this song over and over again, so much. I'm just now realizing what this song means, and I started tearing up because I remember when I asked my dad what it means he said its about a man who feels like he's drowning in a very dark and stormy, empty sea. Of course I took this literally, and was confused when he said he was just like the man in the song that was drowning. Now that Im looking back on this song I can understand a lot of things that I didn't even think about. Parents go through so much stuff that just passes their children's minds.😥

"It's about moving forward, not depression." Unfortunately, the gift yet curse of music is that a person relates to it in their own way,it doesn't matter what the artist intended. It invokes an incredible emotion, but it's not up to anyone to tell someone the "correct way" to interpret their feelings.
@quappo

Brenna Lee i mean if the artist had an intended meaning in the song and u interpret something completely different, then i mean yeah you’re still gonna hear whatever u want but that doesnt mean it isnt an incorrect interpretation of what the artist was trying to portray.

Great wording. I completely agree. I could go on a rant about how much this song means to me. I woke up one day, heard this on the radio, and said ¨well, screw what I´m doing right now, I´m going to live my own way. Not as a depressed idiot who knows nothing of the world, but as a happy man that has a meaningful life.¨ This song was the inspiration for me to turn my life around.

Is not aboput moving foward. the song is about how painfull is lossing someone, how society point at you for not knowing how to deal with it, and that life has no reason to be absurd and painfull. this has the effect of telling the listener " i know that is painfull, and you look for an explanation, there isnt one" wich helps moving on, listening to this song again and again and again, over and over and over, has the efect of someone saying to you, "i know it hurts", singing it along helps too, in many ways, but that doesnt mean the song is about moving on. A song about moving on would be Someday of Nickelback.

He literally says staring down the barrel of a 45. I watched a special about this song and he talked about a friend who was the life of the party losing his girlfriend or wife and losing it. Thd friend was trying to commit suicide and that when they learned of hid depression. He said he wrote this song to bring awareness to the depression that can happen to anyone and NOT to keep it to yourself like his friend did. I can't remember if his friend lived or not. This song speaks to me though. I lost wife and kid and it feels as if I'm just going through the motions living in the ashes of another life with no reason to accept the way things have changed. That's how I feel. This song is very literal in creation and meaning, not abstract. That's a good thing for the reasons you mentioned.

The inspiration from the song really came from - I think a lot of people kinda take a literal sense because of the lyrics - but the song is basically about the day that you wake up and you look at yourself in the mirror and you finally decide that you want to try to become comfortable in your own skin, and realize that you’re gonna have to make yourself happy before you’re going to make anyone else happy. And basically, the 45 isn’t an actual literal term for a gun, I used it as a metaphor for the world, the .45 is actually the world and what it hands you every day of your life. When you get up, it’s a gift to be alive to begin with. A lot of different people, when I’ve talked about it, they said, “Do you really honestly mean that?” And I’m like, “Well, yeah.” Because I’ve been in that situation where I didn’t know if I wanted to continue going on and I didn’t know how to necessarily make myself comfortable with who I was, trying to find a way of learning more about myself. And you come from a dark place sometimes, and that’s really the reality of the song. It’s about overcoming and about moving forward. And it’s basically about understanding that it’s not always going to be good, but you really have no one to blame for yourself if you don’t move forward. That’s where the whole, “Nobody knows what I believe,” [comes from] because we’re all individuals. So that’s really where it comes from, it’s about moving on, really.[1] basically, the song is not about suicide.

i never really thought of this song as an suicide song, i always thought of it as a young man losing himself from abuse and pain (emotional) which made him fell apart and he killed someone hence the "swimming through the ashes of another life" which meant he was trying to find another life but he had to get thru the troubles of his past. Idk, music can be interpreted many ways but thats my two cents.

I've seen multiple comments about how this is real music and that this generation's music is terrible and makes no sense. Yes, it's wonderful music and most of music from that time was great. In the rock genre, that is. Most of the people commenting that this generation's music is horrendous is mainly looking at the pop genre and what is being played on the radio. Keep in mind there are many other artists who release music that are so great. You just have to dig a little to find them and they exist on RU-vid, iTunes, everywhere. They can be on your street corner for all you know. Don't judge a whole generation's music by what is playing on the radio.

You're absolutely right. and to a certain reply I ask: Are you so stupid as to think it doesn't matter? This song helped me get through my depression after I realized that my own father wasn't worth keeping in my life. not because I'm snobbish or anything. It was a toxic relationship, and I was slowly becoming a horrible person. you want to know why this song matters? It matters because it helps teens who feel hopeless express how they're feeling when they can't find the words themselves. So please. Don't be so quick to dismiss songs like this as pointless or anything like that. These songs are relevant this day and age.

Coming from a writer, you are offensive. No one can truly understand MY writing. I write for them to feel how it makes them feel. They can't feel how I feel, they can't see why I wrote it. They see it how they see it, feel what they feel, and that's the beauty of writing. My writing, bands writing, etc, can make people feel so many different ways. What's wrong with that?

FUN FACT: This song does not use "barrel of a 45" LITERALLY. The lead singer of Shinedown claims this song is about looking at yourself in a mirror and deciding you're comfortable in your own skin. The .45 is symbolic of the things life throws your way.

This song reminds me of growing up. When you're a kid, you seem so happy and full of life, but when you get older... Most of us go through so much that we are completely different people by the time we're adults in just about every way. I think that's why there is "no real reason to accept the way things have changed" and why the singer is "swimming through the ashes of another life. Alot of people commit suicide in the 18-30 age Gap so that's another reason the .45 handgun makes sense. Just my interpration

Powerful lyrics! Many of Shinedown tunes are about the struggles of life (being the .45) that we all deal with at some point or another .. be strong, and know that you ARE loved .. as hard as it gets for some of us, you have to keep your chin up, stay positive, and move on. It's All Just A Symptom of Being Human.

Absolutley right Louis - Many people think this is about suicide, but the song is actually about hope, to fight against the odds. Shinedown lead singer Brent Smith told Foundry Music: "I think a lot of people kind of take a literal sense because of the lyrics - but the song is basically about the day that you wake up and you look at yourself in the mirror and you finally decide that you want to try to become comfortable in your own skin, and realize that you're gonna have to make yourself happy before you're going to make anyone else happy. And basically, the 45 isn't an actual literal term for a gun, I used it as a metaphor for the world, the 45 is actually the world and what it hands you every day of your life. When you get up, it's a gift to be alive to begin with. A lot of different people, when I've talked about it, they said, 'Do you really honestly mean that?' And I'm like, 'Well, yeah.' Because I've been in that situation where I didn't know if I wanted to continue going on and I didn't know how to necessarily make myself comfortable with who I was, trying to find a way of learning more about myself. And you come from a dark place sometimes, and that's really the reality of the song. It's about overcoming and about moving forward. And it's basically about understanding that it's not always going to be good, but you really have no one to blame for yourself if you don't move forward. That's where the whole, 'Nobody knows what I believe,' comes from because we're all individuals. So that's really where it comes from, it's about moving on, really.

Steven Hardy The song isnt about suicide though. Think about it: a 45 is a pistol. You can't exactly stare down the barrel of a pistol if its you holding it. The 45 is a metaphor for the world: its someone else holding it. They demand he change, pointing a gun at him. So here he is staring down the barrel, refusing to yield to their demands and change himself.
@pagangamer87
@pagangamer87 10 лет назад
Tayman A Totally agree with you.. but in this case!? staring down the barrel of a 45, is Dean looking at the crossroads in his life. No matter which way he goes, he feels like death is inches away, but no matter what.. he keeps going. Keeps fighting.

Tayman A Have you ever held a gun? You can stare down a barrel of a pistol very easily, I personally tested this (With an airsoft gun, Not THAT stupid,) I even extended the barrel an extra 6 inches, It is very possible to stare down a barrel and pull the trigger hitting yourself, Don't mean to sound rude, this has just become a big debate between me and people I know, And what you said kinda annoyed me xD

Killing yourself might seem like an answer for you when you are depressed, but that is because you are oblivious to everyone else who truly cares about you. many people have been in the same position, some have failed, some succeeded, my heart tears into trillions of pieces, because I know exactly how it feels to be in that position. For the person "staring down the barrel" only ONE thing is on your mind. It's for the best. but in reality, it is probably the worst thing you can do. If you succed, your problems die with you. ONLY YOURS. not to mention you create problems for your family, your friends, all of your loved ones. it will take its toll. Keep in mind, that even if you cant see it now, a month or two from now, or even a year from now, life is worth it. Living is worth is. you are meant to change someone's life for the best.

Suicide doesn't take the pain away. It just shifts it to those around you that love and care about you.

This song has me in tears. It was not long ago when I was at the point to end it. After two weeks in ICU an my life in shambles, I realized threw all the heart break n bs, I would of made life worse for my kids & family. My best advice for anyone going threw shit is think about everyone else an the pain you will cause, not yourself.

Adam is a coward and he does not deserve respect. People who kill themselves deserve nothing more than shame. Becase we CAN ALWAYS BEAT THE FUCKING OBSTACLES OF LIFE, no matter how hard it is. there's always a way to make trough for yourself or by the people beside you.

@@goshjosh2041 all powerful all knowing and all seeing??? doesn't seem like that's true. if it was i wouldn't believe it would be what the "bible" depicts it as. just a shit ton of bs if you ask me. see a lot of contradictions in every "bible" there is. truthfully we are an just a species we weren't created we evolved over trillions of years hence why are universe continues to expand and i don't mean that figuratively galaxies all over spread out continuously every year. if evolutions wasn't real we would still be cavemen which back then were what the bible would depict as "giants" like goliath, due to the amount of oxygen available to them it allowed extreme cellular growth allowing them to run speed of close to 35-45 mph so yea i would have to say that's some fairy tale bullshit when we die out bodies get recycled by the earth. your "bible" is a way for you to be categorized by your govt to keep you complacent and dumb to what they are truly up to. but hey if you want i can show you what i mean there are plenty of well documented experiments showing what increasing the amount of oxygen intake does for animals., it made piranhas herbivores instead of omnivores. and fyi i was a junior preacher for 6 years so ive read the bible front to back created my own sermons so i know a thing or two about the bible its really just abunch of metaphors people took litterally. the only reason why religion was created was to keep people complacent to fight for wars so they had a "reason" to the entire catholic church was built off of genocide and manipulations, Christianity was made for the same reason but more in a fight with the catholics which was just as bloody as isreal is now and all in the name of what god. what god do you think would allow his ever "forgiving" followers (hypocrites) to kill innocent people who have lived there their entire lives. but its in the name of god so its okay. wake up man!

My dad used to play this song all the time when I was around 7-10. I hated and loved his songs, but I never really listened to the meaning of any of them. Now that he’s gone, I’ve tried to find some of the ones we used to listen to and that he used to play, like Second Chance, Monster, Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, etc. and just being able to fathom the meaning now puts these all in perspective. That’s what growing up means to me. I think i know where I got my taste for sad songs from.
