Variations on a Cloud
Miracle Musical
2012
(Originally distributed as a preorder bonus for the album Hawaii: Part II released later that year.)
--
Both of us see a cloud, or whatever we may believe
Being it may be proud, or whatever we want to see
Okay, jump
Cirrus in light you lie
[Cumulus dark you vow]
Give us varying shades of grey
[Give us colorful shades of grey]
Floating inside the sky
[Floating outside the sky]
Show us everything every day
[Show us nothing in any way]
Okay, jump to end it all
Let this one be to break the fall
It's a little bit of magic to end the world
(But I thought you knew me truly)
Something different than we started with in the world
(Does it even matter to me?)
I was in the hearing
Bumming a humble clearing from Caligula
In his Shangri-La, la, la
It's a little bit of magic to end the world
(But I thought you knew me truly)
Something different than we started with in the world
(Does it even matter to me?)
Miracle worker, I saw you begin it
Walking the water (so soft on the rain)
See what you see in the surface (a limit)
Ladies and gentlemen, please
Why don't we keep it coming back
And coming back, and coming back
Why don't we keep it coming back
And coming back, and coming back
(Join if you wish)
Keep it coming back
And coming back, and coming back
Why don't we keep it coming back
And coming back
These days it's hard to find friends
[We've been to this scene]
But opportunities bend
[Aboriginal meme]
And we spend the chance sleeping on the top of the fence
[Had a smotherful mother full of meddle and steam]
Can't believe what we've seen won't be burned to the ground
Though we make ourselves castles every tide we're around
Do you like how I walk? Do you like how I talk?
(It's a little bit of magic to end the world)
Do you like how my face has learned to tick like a clock?
(But I thought you knew me truly)
I have a wonderful life, I know a powerful Bob
(Something different than we started with in the world)
He eulogizes me for being geocentric
(Does it even matter to me?)
Keep it coming back
And coming back and coming back
Why don't we keep it coming back
And coming back, and coming back, and coming

I don't think anybody else has noticed, so I'll point it out; "Keep it coming back and coming back and coming back" is in the same tune as the last bit of dream sweet in sea major, where joe says "Bye, Hi, Sigh, Hawaii"

0:57 sounds really familiar, is that from something else? Edit: nvm I think I was just thinking about come alive from the greatest showman. But 2:11 does kinda remind me of that one bit in Dream Sweet so, hey.

Is "Ladies and gentleman, please" a reference to Banana Man? I never listened to Isle Unto Thyself so idk if it's from that

I have multiple theories about this song it can be either About 9-11 Friends drifting apart Friends drifting apart due to 9-11 Or it can be about the fall of the Roman Empire and the world entering the dark ages Or the end of tally hall

I don’t think that, as might be gathered on first hearing, this is insisting that someone commit suicide, but instead is convincing someone that they shouldn’t as there is something to come back to and ways in which you can improve the world, even after an event like 9/11. I think that, ultimately, this is about hope and the effort made to break through fear and depression.

I STILL have no idea what this song is about. But it's really nice! Have you made lyric videos of every Hawaii Part II song now?
@acronscawlernc6697
@acronscawlernc6697 4 года назад
vulpes_iridis But I'm not sure if it's about 9/11 (It very well could be) or if it's using 9/11/twin tower imagery to convey something else. The song itself doesn't reference the towers themselves, and while some lyrics don't make sense without the music video, I'm not quite sold on that being a concrete meaning. But I've been wrong before,

vulpes_iridis Really? Where else? I never noticed that. But I did notice that vocoder is used specifically in Hawaii Part II. I think vocoder might represent soul or spirit, maybe inner thought.

This song is about society’s larger reaction to 9/11, with the “cloud” having “variations” being the cloud of smoke from the World Trade Center. Everything changed in differing ways, with some solutions and world-views pointing one way and others pointing a different way. The part before the first chorus shows a flavor of this in having a two-voiced segment saying opposite things about the same event. This song was also made to lament the split-up of Tally Hall, tying Miracle Musical’s Hawaii Part ii with Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum by including references to Isle Unto Thyself and Murders with Ruler of Everything. If anyone has any deeper insight, or if I’m cosplaying the subject of The Mind Electric, feel free to tag me in a reply.

Kinda a mix of abstract ideas. A less abstract one, however, is the death of Tally Hall.

@@acronscawlernc6697 In my personal opinion, the way you perceive a song is how its meaning is true. The 9/11 references are there, its even hinted from the creator. the line that says: "Miracle Worker I saw you begin it! Walking the water! (so soft on the rain)" is a reference to when the stunt performer named "Miracle Worker" tightrope across the twin towers, on a foggy day, hence the reference to rain. Another reference to 9/11 is the lines: "Jump to end it all. Let this one break the fall" refer to the footage of people jumping off the twin towers to kill themselves. The three people chorus starting at 2:13 is how the world felt after the tragedy. Some felt terrified, depressed, confused. Others felt that it wasn't their issue. Heck, our generation today doesn't even know the effect of 9/11. All these glaring signs point to a song about 9/11, but narratively, the tone fits with the ending of Hawaii: part II. Hawaii: part II is a whole other story in of itself. (if you know either stories of Hawaii: part II then you can just skip this next paragraph) I personally like to lean into two different stories: a man meets a woman whilst on a trip to Hawaii. Together they fall in love and end the night by dancing at to the "white ball" in the sky (i.e. the moon). However the man discovers that his lover was murdered, he is put in trial due to being a prime suspect. in the court case he pleads for insanity so that he doesn't go to prison. The judge then "condemns them to the infirmary" as hinted in: The Mind Electric. The man is then subject to electric shock therapy, a type of therapy that used to be used where the patient would endure electric currents within the body. Supposedly it was meant to calm the brain down, basically slap it in the face and tell it to go back to normal. However, electric shock therapy isn't very good for humans as it is no longer practiced that often today. The man actually goes insane and endures years of being inside an asylum. Once his therapy is concluded, he boards a boat to head home, depressed he contemplates his current life, and remembers the love he lost years ago. Driven from his insanity, he hears her in the distance, on the horizon at the sea, and decides to set sail to there. From there, the man gets lost at sea, and dies, where he is reunited with his lover. the alternative story, one less positive is the one where the man is responsible for killing his lover. He endures electric shock therapy, goes insane, depressed at sea, he dies. When, however he steps into the afterlife, his lover tells him that he cannot follow her, as the sins he committed cannot allow him to pass into heaven. At the end of: "Dream Sweet in Major Sea" he accepts his fate and takes the responsibility of his sins, and braces for whatever may happen next. From a narrative standpoint, this song is the song that symbolizes their reunion in the afterlife if the positive story remains true (the one where the man is innocent). If this song is strictly an homage to 9/11, then the negative story remains true (one where the man is the killer). However, the way I like to think of it is that both are true. You can think however the song is about, you shouldn't let the defining qualities of what a creator says define what you believe what a song is about. So, I'm gonna end this little exposition here by stating this: its about 9/11 and Hawaii: part II, if you want to make it about either one.
