Days after a devastating tear in the mainsail rendered their chances of a competitive performance in Leg 3 of The Ocean Race, the team finally has a weather window to start the huge task of attempting a repair.
Short on spare material and adhesive for the fix, it will take a ‘MacGyver’ effort to get the boat back racing …

THAT is phenomenal - Even Orion was smiling down upon that effort. Good timing as it looks like full hoist main to the finish. Go get that extra point for third! Ten hours of sail repair and then its time to go on watch... You will have a good sleep in Itajai.

Incredible skills, teamwork and leadership. I'm sure Jack could fix anything. You guys rock. I loved to see my favorite constellation (Orion), above you when you finally hoisted the main. Less than 100nm to go at the time of posting. Nearly time to hand over to the shore team and get some well earned rest and recuperation. Please get a "palm" or two for the needles. We didn't have a sewing machine either, 36 hours sewing both luff tapes and a center panel on a 67ft Spinnaker mid atlantic (the only one we had left - we confetti'd the light and medium) was brutal. Still think about it 21 years later.

Good grief! I cannot believe all the shit you've had to deal with. A blown out main sail? And that's only the start. I've always felt that the Imocas were too stiff, too light, too computer controlled to do this race. The sailors need to not only be sailors, but computer engineers, psychologists, comedians, civil engineers, seamstresses, news anchors, chemical engineers, meteorologists, daredevils, climbers, doctors, surgeons, lifeguards, world-class swimmers and athletes, able to sleep in the worst conditions possible, ditto for eating and shitting, etc... I, of course, could never to this, nor would I want to. These are the most incredible people I've ever seen, and I know some incredible people. Why would you want to put yourself through this? Jesus.
