Ana Berry’s one of the funniest teachers you’ll ever meet. She’s also part of a small group of Pākehā working in kura kaupapa. Reporter Yvonne Tahana went to meet two Hoani Waititi teachers and asked them about their place in te ao Māori (the Pākehā world).

The Maori language is awesome! I wish the language continues to grow among New zealanders. Greetings from a young brazilian polyglot!

In French Polynesia, the Tahitian language is mandatory in primary schools, even for European and Asian pupils. It's just 1 or 2 hours every week but it's still better than nothing. Then it becomes an option in middle and high school.

This is awesome. And the fact they were probably chosen by merit rather than ethnicity is awesome too. That's the true meaning of kotahitanga. We're all one when we understand, acknowledge, assume and appreciate our place in this world. And we'll be swimming in divinity when we can finally respect and appreciate each other. No barriers. Choice. (I'm not a fluent maori either... yet!)

I'm the only pakeha in my reo class and it's deffinitely scary, considering the fact that everyone else is proficient with not just their korero, but also most of them could recite their whakapapa a bit. It's uplifting to know that there are other pakeha that are out there speaking in te reo o te maori tangata!

No good speaking te reo without manaakitanga ie psychically doing, giving, don't have to be told. And being a very kind and approachable person. kind of like the silent language which I would say is the best part of our language rather than all drama talk.

Of course Pakeha should speak Te Reo Maori. Aotearoa is the fenua of the Maori people. And even better if they got the will and passion for it. Take notes America and Australia. You are all illegal immigrants living on stolen colonized lands. This and all native/indigenous languages are what you should be speaking not English/Spanish/French!!!
