Great story and Cast! Ida Lupino really shined! Evil for the Directors Guild not to have given any nomination or at least recognition to Ida as a Great Female Director!
Jealousy. The big studios hated anyone they couldn't control, and often tried to ruin them. Ida started IdaLou Studios so she didn't have to be owned or have to sleep her way into a movie.
Great to see Jean Gabin. He starred in one of the greatest films:" La Grand Illusion" But for me, Ida Lupino was the most beautiful star in Hollywood. And she could write, produce and direct. What a talent!
Ida Lupino came from a show business family so her talent was in the blood and in the environment she grew up in. She was however very gifted in all aspects of the business. She was quite beautiful in a unique way.
Beautifully dreamlike noir. .. These old films are so soothing in their intimacy - very unlike to the mostly grading smarmy and snarky cynical films of today. .. (What a fantasy all cozy living on that small house-barge serenaded by the braking waves!) ... Note ... Thomas Mitchell, who plays Tiny, was truly an outstanding actor, and also the very first actor to ever win an Oscar, a Golden Globe and an Emmy.
What a fine movie that just happened to pop up in my feed. I've always admired and respected Ida Lupino for her creative drive and skills, but I never really appreciated what a ravishing, heart-aching beauty she was! Surrounded by hard cases, all trying to self-medicate to dis-association with alcohol - she was like a beautiful, colorful daisy growing up through a crack in the concrete. Thanks so much for uploading this gem 💖 🇨🇦
Well said Mike, there is a quality to the imagination, the art and the essence of a great movie which did not adhere to shock, boom, smack or flash in those days of the silver screen and hey does it show. I feel sad for many youngsters who will not understand these great achievements as there is no captivating blast, thunderous stereo-sound or exctatic orgasm bellowing forth somewhere. The climax and the orgasm in these movies is all induced upon the imagination, the mind and the heart in the privacy of one's own temptation and thrill parameter, not in widescreen for all to share.
Thanks so much for this film, I came across it while searching for something to watch, was going to pass it by but something made me stay to watch. I figured any film with Ida Lupino had to be worth the time. It definitely was. Superb cast and acting. A gem.
Nice aquatic scenes for studio shots ! The waves splashing against the breakwater are very convincing ! I had to look up the history - After Pearl Harbor the whole west coast became a security zone so the water shots became a studio job - Charles G. Clarke was nominated for the academy award for best cinematography, Black-and-White for them - And everything else is nice about this film, too ! TNX 4 Posting !
Great film! Jean Gabin and Ida Lupino, who were never less than magnificent in all of their roles, here make one of the best on-screen pairings I've ever seen. Their scenes together are absolute magic! Claude Rains, who scared the life out of me in Phantom of the Opera when I was a kid, has never given a bad performance and here in Moontide he could not have been better as the warm, wise, poetic Nutsy. Interesting to see Ralph Byrd, the original Dick Tracy, in the small role of Reverend Price and that Hollywood stalwart Jerome Cowan (with well over 100 films to his credit) as the very likeable Dr. Brothers; great scene between him and Gabin (Bobo) where he asks for advice about love from Bobo. And last but not least the wonderful creepy performance by Thomas Mitchell, star of Broadway and Hollywood, writer, director and screenwriter, and the first actor to have won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony award. A fabulous cast in a fabulous film and, of course, Gabin and Lupino! Who could ask for anything more?
Ida Lupino is and was one of a kind. Incredible at acting and directing. All women should praise her. I am a man and I have always adored her. ONE of Hollywoods best talents. I personally do not find this as "Film Noir" it show no artistic cinematography this is just a good b/w film.
You're right she was a one off and taking into account the times she lived in - being accepted as more than just a beautiful woman was a huge achievement.
I disagree with the film noir although that as art is always debatable, but heartily agree with everything else you said. It is a pleasure to share views on such an eloquent polite level, compared to other movie pages and reviews. I find many people are vulgar, lazy and corrupt in one sense or another, cheers John.
Hi @@stuartlawsonbeattie6200 One of the things I really enjoy about youtube is reading the comments for movies or songs from people who really love them. So many of these movies mean or have meant a lot to different people, and it is a joy to share their love. I first became aware of Ida Lupino from the tv show Mr. Adams & Eve, which she starred in with her husband Howard Duff. My mom and I watched it together. Then when I saw this on the late show, and later High Sierra, I became a lifetime fan. Many people are ill-bred and thoughtless, but so many are sincere and caring. Best wishes to you!
What a fantastic, capture, a time freeze, a glimpse into an era of time slip, where the movie flickers so many emotions, where smiles flash, where hearts are drawn, downed, dined on and desired. This leaves plenty to the imagination as it stokes the fire so well, so deep and so pleasureable. Well done and Congratulations to all, especially Ida Lupino, Jean Gabin and Claude Rains along with the powerhouse of Thomas Mitchell. I personally would love to escort Ida Lupino home, bless her ravishing beauty but I would also relish the blessed company of Claude Rains, who I have the ultimate respect for, nearly always playing second fiddle to Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart or James Cagney (Wow, all the GREATS!!!), but so excelling in all he did so well and majestically. Claude Rains is a must have in every great movie as his character portrayals are poetic, eloquent, mesmerising as is Lida's beauty but captivating all of it's own magnetic charm and panache. Thank you so much for sharing, you made a poet's day, cheers!!!
I love the part , when Anna says " may I kiss you ?" Some kissin' fine , then she kisses him with such love and he said " a a some kissing little not to much" hahaha 😂. Then she kisses him even more. Mmmm A true loving women who loves her man or boyfriend or soul mate will never fine a day where she won't ever stop kissing with love in her eyes to him. It's a true loving fact , if anyone knows its true love when you first make eye contact and then for some reason you cant stop thinking bout that person and you just met that person without saying a word to each other , its a sign it's true love cuz if you think about it, my way I never left my man 🥰😉 . i love my man. I just love a good loving couple on TV.
A perfect movie and such a time capsule of a time when people were allowed to be free. Everyone knew what Tiny was, yet even at the end, there was pity.
Awwww Man, what a sweet film! And still full of adventure and suspense! Several great stars in it too! Not to mention the dog 🐕 Very good story! Thanks for posting! 😎✌
I don't know how I found this movie, but I was determined *not* to watch it, much less like it. After the first ten minutes, I was hooked! I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of the leading man, but I'm a major fan now. I'll be looking for.anything he acted in. Growing up, I wasn't allowed to watch Ida Lupino. I didn't find out until I was an adult that it was because my dad had a huge "crush" on her when he was in his teens, so mom didn't allow Ida in the house after she and dad were married! I love her now. She was so young and beautiful in this movie and there was magic between the two stars. I'm putting this on my list of favorites to watch over and over. Thanks for posting this! 🌈🌈🌈
That's very poignant - my 68yo heart went to her too, and as a younger man I too would have held her tight. And my wife would have done the same as your mother did. Thanks for sharing that. 💖 🇨🇦
fansofidalupino-Thank you so very much. (I.L.) had it all, talent, beauty and that indescribable magnetic something that was uniquely hers. Bk&Wt films only served to cause the audience to focus on her intensity. A melancholy scene from her pulled you down emotionally, and when she smiled....the whole place lit up!!!
Jean Gabin one of the great actors of French Cinema. Gabin and Lupino are great in this film. I was surprised to see that there are 2 directors to this film.....Archie Mayo, whom I don't know and Fritz Lang, German director (M) and a number of American films.
Thanks for putting this on for us to see . I`m a big fan of french films and Jean Gabin was a superstar in french cinema world for decades . I heard about this movie he made during a short time he spent living in U,S,A but this film was not a hit and seemed forgotten . Strange to hear Jean talking in another language than french but I`ve enjoyed the film .
I Agree. Did u see "The Hard Way?" I think that was so like Lupino. She had the substance, of a woman, who had some hard knocks in her life. Also Barbara Stanwyck. They both grew up the hard way. They can keep the blondes, with the breast implants. None compare to those two.
What a film Dona, I love it too, thanks for your input, they don't make em like this anymore, I am 53 and I loved every second. I even had a tear in my eyes. Cheers, I find these films are superb inspiration for my poetry as it is real, not plastic, enhanced or digitalised as new films are and the pool talent of the silver screen is immense compared to Today.
stonethrower88 Let's see here, should I give the fall of morality in the movie industry, I thought it was obvious. Movies made before 1960 had very little nudity, cursing, grotesque bloodiness, etc.. And yes, I enjoy watching movies without all that. I like movies with respectable actors, with plots I can relate to, without all the PC stupidity.
you might want to watch those "good old movies from yesteryear" a little more closely. There's plenty of immorality, violence, wayward morals etc etc. nostalgia has a way of clouding the real viewpoint.
Apparently most people that make negative comments of new films as being trash, just go to blockbusters or popular films. If they would open up their minds, they can seek and watch great current independent films or small films not followed by the masses. Every other comment on the older films is always the same, "they don't make good films anymore ". Wake up folks, its 2017 take your blinders off. For the record, I adore 30s and 40s films .
No sugar on it please Sherlock. Evey, You are miles away bless you. They don't make em like they used to and since 1985, they are terrible, plastic, digitalised and enhanced. Hitchcock knew how to use special effects and now everyone wants to emulate a trampoline ejection form a punch that would kill in the modern era, it is diabolical. The so called stars, scripts and authenticity is made up, completely fabricated and there is little attention to detail, accents and eras. Hollywood blew the hell out of everything and it continues to do so. I have not watched a new movie for arpound 6 years and I wll continue to do so, as I adore the silver screen, when people were characters and love scenes did not have to show one inch of flesh yet they knew how to shimmer, smolder and quiver with lights, sounds, reality and senses reeling.
I think Jean Gabin steals the show here. His acting was so casual, so devil-may-care. A man's man who liked to drink, flirting with women, living like a gypsy day-to-day, looking like a Kenneth Branagh leading man stud. What American actor could of possibly been cast for BoBo's role? Maybe Spencer Tracy or Clark Gable?? All I can really come up with would be Henry Fonda in a Grapes of Wrath / Tom Joad sort of way.
I've watched lots of movies and I've seen these 2 actors act in movies where they like to drink or flirt , etc.or at the same time ..and sometimes it works out for them and sometimes not. ... Johnny deep and Robin Williams ...Each one of them liked to do both and sometimes all the things you said they did. , I'd have to think of others ... i may know of few others.😌 Just my opinion. 🤔
Paul Newmen is other one I watched him act in lots of classic movies really played the role with more & more, I watched him in " Cat on a hot tin roof " 1958 ...He had problems but he did do those things in his movies .
Ida - never seen her act better, and Jean Gabin, phenomemal, and yet I never heard of him before, not too many Gabin movies to see. I paused to comment as Gabin sets a chair out on the dock for Ida to sit in so they can enjoy the sea at night together.
Amazing that such a simple, low budget, small sets, and so few with absolutely no special effects movie can move so many emotions and give such pleasure. Been watching for over a year now and just simply want to watch again. ❤👍🏻👍🏻🤌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🌬💀🏴☠️
This is "Moontide". I searched for M 42 and it's a modern movie about Jackie Robinson. I don't get it. Anyway, it's another of Ida Lupinos great roles, and Paul Henreid in a 10 gallon hat was fun. Gabin and the rest and a good story is always a find. The Dog broke my Heart, since one of mine did the same thing the last time I had to be taken to the Hospital. I had a friend take her my bath robe, and she slept on it for 3 days (and still does since it was full of short, White hairs.) TY!
I’m in my sixties and know most of the really good actresses but I have never heard of Ida Lupino,I never heard my mum mention her either which is strange.I think she’s a great actress in every movie I watch with her in it.
This is my third time seeing this wonderful movie and I love it more with each viewing. Great storyline, superb casting, and, excuse my morbidity I enjoyed seeing Tiny get his comeuppance.
This goes down as one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. I can't believe that I haven't seen it till now. Here's a short list of some of my other favorites: Captains Courageous Great Expectations Little Lord Fauntleroy Angel On My Shoulder Man Of A Thousand Faces The Champ Grapes Of Wrath Twelve Angry Men The Quiet Man True Grit Casablanca Sergeant York Life Is Beautiful Jeremiah Johnson And many many more Oldie but goodie pictures. Now? Moontide
Ida Lupino came from a show business family so her talent was in the blood and in the environment she grew up in. She was however very gifted in all aspects of the business. She was quite beautiful in a unique way.
