In the original film, Hawkeye (Donald Sutherland) produces a distinctive whistle (which is appropriated by Radar O'Reilly at the film's end). The whistle does not carry into the television program.

I literally have my kids trained with this whistle. When we're out at the store or somewhere, I whistle these three notes, and they know it's time to go. It may sound inhumane, but I find it much better than hollering their names like a typical parent. I'm just a dude whistling, not a man yelling his kids' names. Best parenting shortcut I ever came up with.

He's not the only Star Trek Actor to appear in this film, John Schuck who played "Painless" Waldowski (I probably spelled that wrong) played the Klingon Ambassador in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, where he acted alongside Rene who, prior to playing Odo, played a character called "Colonel West" but most of his scenes were cut from the theatrical release of the latter film. Sally Kellerman who plays "Hot Lips" was in the second pilot episode for the original Star Trek series as Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. Those three actors are the ones I'm most familiar with that have been in this film and in a Star Trek production.

This movie had a lot of newly known and up & coming actors in it. Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, Sally Kellerman (Hot Lips), Robert Duval (Frank Burns), Rene Auberjonois, Tom Skerritt (Duke, Capt. Dallas in Alien), John Schuck, Gary Burghoff (Radar, and only cast member who went to TV show), and Fred Williamson ("Spearchucker" Jones). During the football game in one scene if you look at the far back of the area of the field you will see cars passing by on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles. A gaffe they couldn't avoid and left in the film.

The TV show, while great in it's heyday, lacked the subtlety of the movie. It was more campy and shamelessly manipulative emotionally. And it did a LOT of moralizing without the exciting SUBVERSION of the film. Sutherland and Gould and the whole cast (plus the actor's dream director, Robert Altman) made an unforgettable and unique motion picture. A classic.
@whitshade
@whitshade 7 лет назад
Well put and precisely why the TV series makes me cringe. I read an interview with Richard Hornberger (who wrote the novel as Richard Hooker) and he liked the film but detested the TB series. Reason? Moralizing. That and he envisioned Hawkeye as politically conservative, something Alda's Hawkeye was flagrantly not.

I'm a fan of the TV series, but for an odd reason, I like this version of hawkeye played by donald sutherland better than alan alda's lighthearted version. the tv series was not very realistic about a war overall, even when it tried to be serious I was unimpressed, while the film really depicted the fact that the surgeons and soldiers were living in constant fear and had unpredictable conditions. They could be bombed or invaded at any point, while the show was about pointless things like making a concrete floor, giving shots to a horse and of course getting rid of most of the original characters and replacing them with new ones, that I found really hard to adjust to, mainly cause I saw the film before the tv show. I can see why Robert Altman, the director of this film, hated the show. The tv show should get a reboot, with the same dark tone like the film. The reboot would be seriously listed under shows like Law & Order, Bones and NCIS hahaha

I Considering the description of this video, and the comparison of the movie with the TV series, it's interesting to note that MASH author H. Richard Hornberger (pen name Richard Hooker) enjoyed the film but had little love for the TV series. This was primarily due to the fact that he envisioned Hawkeye Pierce as politically conservative, not the flagrant liberal portrayed by Alan Alda. He didn't like the moralizing either, which detracts from the whole point he was trying to make about the extremes people will go to in order to stay sane when they live under extreme conditions.
