@goldiemum3991
@goldiemum3991 4 года назад
@@josephinegilberg4952 You should research what kind of tarantula you want first, and if it's the right species for you; about how to keep and take care for them. I'm researching Ts for several weeks now and I still don't feel ready to actually buy and take care of one. I'm still in the process of learning, and I don't want to make too many rookie mistakes. There's so much information to be found on RU-vid, I'd kindly suggest you to digest as much info as you can cuz your question of "where to buy one" feels a little too enthusiastic combined with too little background info AKA having no idea how to take care of a tarantula. Maybe I'm totally wrong but that's what my gut feeling's telling me. ^^

@@TomsBigSpiders Hi Tom. Sorry to randomly reach out but I could use your advice. I set up a balfouri communal for 5 slings modeled.afyer yours. Second day in they settled behind a piece of cork bark I put in the upper right hand instead of ome of the 4 hides I put in there. I cut a cricket yesterday and it appears they didn't even leave their hide to eat. Should I remove the cork bark to encourage using the other intended hides? Or am I overthinking it and should give them time to settle in? TIA!!!

Man, I went to school for Invertebrate Zoology but didn't finish because of lack of funds. If I had finished and become a researcher, I would seriously want to go on expeditions looking for communal balfouris in the wild. Their social behavior is very developed for a species and genus that supposedly never lives together. The way they figure out a hierarchy through food fights is amazing. They are extremely careful not to hurt each other, yet will very forcefully try and steal the prey. Even their interconnected web tunnels makes me think they have done this before. Their communities are absolutely fascinating and I really feel there must be some kind of evidence of such in nature somewhere on that island. I would love to make that research happen. Maybe not, but the more I see them interact, the more I feel that way...
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 3 года назад
Ugh, what a shame...we need more like you! :) Someone has to observe them in the wild so that we can put this whole debate to rest. If they are NOT social in the wild, that would mean that they just started doing this in captivity, which would be even more fascinating.

I bought six that I've been keeping communally but I've only seen 5 after this last winter. After watching your video I have hope that it's still in there but I do have to do a rehouse very soon. I’m now going through a divorce and when my wife/ex wife-whatever leaves, the spare room is going to be for T’s,and it’s thanks to you,Mark,The Dark den,The spider man and others who have helped me make that decision. Hi. I'm kind of a shy keeper. I don't leave a lot of comments on other sites, but I was most hopeful watching what you had to say about the poecilotheria. Also a favorite of mine, I have a Salem ornamental. She's a juvy. I will try and post a picture with my comments of her setup. She just molted 5 days ago and so she is super bright and what a beauty. Just before she molted I made the mistake and put a cricket into her enclosure. Of course, she did nothing but hide from it. She even webbed around him to keep him out. A few tries later and I was successful and able to remove it. However, she did not know that and she abandoned her nest on the bottom of the tree and climbed high up into the leaves,and built a small cocoon and molted there. How very smart she is. I was very impressed. I was also extremely thankful I was able to retrieve the cricket. My name is Sandra and I currently have 5 different T's. All of which I throughly enjoy. I've been collecting for about 4 yrs. Thank you again

Hello, Sandra! Well, thank you for taking the time to comment. Your Salem Ornamental sounds fantastic. They really are amazing animals and much smarter than we sometimes give them credit for. I'm glad that you were able to retrieve the cricket, as I know how stressful that can be!

Hi Tom it's very nice to meet you. Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate you getting back to me. When I first put her in her new tank she was very stressed and zoomed around the tank a couple of times as you said but after that she has mellowed out and I believe really likes her home. I rarely open the side door, but it was the only way to get that cricket out. And yes you are right it was very stressful but necessary. I check all my T''s every morning & every night. She sits in her tank on the wall waiting for me. Probably not but I like to think so. She has webbed half way up the cork bark tree. I find that interesting as I was told that they make curtain's with their webs. I wonder if I need to put another type of substrate in there for her to use? What do you think? Thank you again! Sincerely, Sandra
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
@@sandraneilson5390 Hello, Sandra! Does she have hiding spots like a cork tub and fake foliage? Mine will usually create their curtains behind the cork or inside of it. Some will set up shop behind the plants. If the enclosure is more open, that might help.
@sandraneilson5390
@sandraneilson5390 Год назад
She has lots of plants that are silk and a cork slab for her tree I did not put around in there on purpose as I wanted to be able to see her. She has however used some of her dirt in her current webbing but like I said it isn't a curtain. I was thinking maybe I needed to put in some Moss or something.

Once again Tom another quality video. I really appreciate everything you do. I also have a communal and it's ten Balfouri strong. They are slings still but as you said they seem to grow faster in a communal environment. I've had mine since August and they have molted 2-3 times already. I'm really excited about them growing into adulthood. Take care Tom. Ibnsarachnids aka Rob

I just noticed my diamentinensis sling just reached 2in and will have to rehouse that speedy fckr. I dont see it that often but nice surprise to see adult coloring showing up!

I had witnessed two instances wherein an individual molts and the others are positioned near the burrow entrance as if they are guarding the molting ones. Really cool species. Also had the opportunity to witness two individuals share a live superworm together as sub adults. Really amazing how nature works. Edit: Unfortunately, one from my communal is a mature male already. I separated him already from the community enclosure.

First, now get some mantids. :p Great video, Its only been up two minutes but I can tell, it will be glorious. Also Polistes species wasps have a very well defined social dominance structure, and coincidentally make fascinating pets in their own right, but they are some one the most attention demanding inverts you can keep.
