The brilliance of MDR sir's approach is made starkly and wonderfully visible in this rendition: 1. The incredible pacing. Above all, his approach to sangeetham is essentially unhurried and prompts deep and serious immersion in the moment. You get saturated with the music. He's never swayed or hurried by pressures from the violin or mridangam or the audience - something extremely hard to resist as ANY vocalist who has ever taken the stage knows well. It is unlike any carnatic musical approach you have ever heard. It takes so much trust in yourself and in your team and you audience to pull that off. 1b. Part of the pacing is how at the relaxed pace, he can expose so many patterns to the audience for their enjoyment. Check the way he says "podaga" at 10:00 and the patterns in the next 2 mins - it's unlike any others' rendition of this pancharatnam. 2. His boldness with straight flat notes. Ga and Ni in this pancharatna are obviously the clear examples here. Magical. There is not elaborate gamaka artifice in showing the Ga, it's presented in its unabashed glory without needed to cover it up. Ni at 4:01 for example. Ga at 6:45 for example. 3. Jaarus or slides. The sangathis at 2:36 and so on for example are different from the standard pathantara. Genius. 3. Freedom. MDR sir suddenly takes detours based on the moment. The one at 7:50 comes to mind. You can never predict where he's going to go. He doesn't shove the music into airtight containers of the structures in the name of discipline. There is freedom and felicity and command - he is the KING of his sangeetha. 4. Lyrics. The points above allow MDR sir to deliver the lyrics in sensible and conversational ways to us. We know each word because he splits the lyrics sensibly. Usual pathantara is maa;haaa-nu-bhaavulu for example while MDR clearly states mahanubhavulu as one word. This approach is present throughout the entire piece. What a legend, pranams to MDR sir 🙏🏽

Though the rendition is somewhat unconventional like most other performances of the great MDR,the rare combination of the great trio celebrated among the greatest artists in the Carnatic tradition, places this recording among the most precious ones to be preserved for future generations.
