Between 1976 and 1992, Sheila Hodgson authored and produced for BBC Radio 4 a series of plays which portrayed M. R. James as the diarist of a series of fictional ghost stories, mainly inspired by fragments referred to in his essay "Stories I Have Tried to Write".
A Whisper in the Ear by Sheila Hodgson. BBC Radio 4 - Afternoon Theatre. Origianl broadcast: 7th Ocober 1976. Based on M. R. James Marcilly-Le-Hayer plot idea retitled 'The Villa Martine' in story form.
Infatuated with a dangerously wrong widow and suffering accordingly. James goes to France for this one, to encounter sinister goings-on in a garden and Grizelda Hervey as a baleful mother-in-law.
Apologies for the poor sound quality of this recording.

Good story well told. Sound quality brings back memories of when I used to listen to radio plays on my old transistor radio lol 😊

I’ve listened to much worse recordings of radio plays. Thank you for sharing this one. I enjoy this series very much.

The sound is not as bad as I expected, but it is a shame as I usually like to listen as I am going to sleep, the distracting audio makes this impossible ....but I am listening now during my morning coffee break. Thank you, good story.

The stories are mostly rather good; but, as others have noted, are let down by the sound quality. Which is odd for professionally-produced recordings.
