For instrumental musicians, age is not much of a problem...atleast upto sixtieth year. But vocalists cannot maintain the voice as they get older.. Just as in human life and even of klanguages and civilizations ( jawaharlal ref), childhood is full of joy , blooming of youth brings out the best and then gradually , the vitality yields place to formalism and spirit gets lost... MS 's very early songs prior to 1940 had zest but not much polish. After 1940, we see and hear a different MS ( 24 then). This became sweeter and sweeter as years progressed and reached peak around 1945-1955 decade partly due to critical corrections and suggestions from connoisseurs like Kalki. I refer to her gramaphone records of the period from 1940 to 1960 as Vintage MS. In those days, we did not have TV and all that we knew of MS was through her records and films especially Meera ( Tamil and Hindi) which for some mysterious reason, went out of circulation even in 1960. rarely shown in theaters. Hindi Meera has vanished absolutely with so many gems of songs in Hindusthani ragams. I have all those songs as 78 rpm extracted mp3. The tragedy is that saregama is muting all those gems uploaded even by renowned bloggers like alaknanda2007. .. saregama must allow true enthusiasts to share those old songs in 78 rpm and old films. True, saregama itself is uploading some of the great songs in Meera but in a totally unimaginative way. They should design the image so that it will indicate the song in the mp4. or even better still publish the video clips on behalf of the company. ... MS was a radiant beauty . in early years. Where is the necessity of giving the video of the recorded songs? It is the music that counts not the video of the kutchery . A plain picture of her middle age will do. even slides should be avoided not having a beariing of the song. Wow,Wonderful. I've listened to saregama version.Actually MS amma was very old then and I was wondering about how the earlier versions sounded like.Thanks for this wonderful upload,I now am able to listen to both versions.Very nice quality upload.
I go back decades in time. As a young boy I recollect M S Subbulakshmi Amma singing on a Big Stage near Samadhi of Sri Purandara Dsasaru on the banks of the River Tungabhadra in Hampi. I think His Highness Jayachamaraja Wodeyar was the Chief Guest on that day.
