M S Subbulakshmi - Multi-lingual Invocation (5 languages)

Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi & Smt Radha Viswanathan were invited to render the invocation on the eve of the inaugration of the 6th Afro-Asian Congress of Ophthalmology, held in Madras, on 04th January, 1976. Since the delegates to the conference were from different nations, this invocation was rendered in 5 languages - Sanskrit, Arabic, Japanese, English & Tamil - with extracts from the Quran, the Bible and other sacred texts. The last section in Tamil is on Kannappa Nayanar, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, who removed his own eyes, when he saw the Lord feign eye-sore. We at Paramparaa1916 are very glad indeed to share this very rare recording with all our subscribers and followers.

This clip shows two things First - Shrimati MS Subbulakshmi's immense versatility and undeniable talent which spanned across languages of the holy land of India AND beyond! Second - The open mindedness and tolerance ingrained in the Indian artists like her, who, despite being a Hindu Tamilian, sang a Muslim tune in Arabic and a Christian tune in English and her voice meshed into different textures as she sang those languages! Pleasantly surprised by her Japanese too! Subbulakshmi Ji is definitely a legend and a worthy winner of the Bharat Ratna!

M. S. Subbulakshmi and her daughter reciting Alhamdulillah lillahi rabbil 'alamin (لحمد لله ربّ العالمين) is the 2nd in this track.

@plbhat03 Thank you for your kind comment. I believe the Japanese "raga" is akin to Sivaranjani with Suddha Dha. This was incorporated into Carnatic music by the late Dr. S.Ramanathan and named "Jaapaani". Do subscribe and follow our channel for more rare gems by Smt MSS and Smt Radha

Today is my lucky day.felt like angels were singing.I loved the part when she changed the pace from Gospel to tamil,great landing and great take off(sorry dont know the exact technical terms).Thanks so much to the great team at paramparaa!!!

Thank you very much for posting such an unusual presentation of Smt MSS. it brought tears to me to hear the invocation(what raga was that, the Japanese version, Both MSS and Radha were true to the traditions they presented. The transition from one tradition to the other was very smooth and full of feelings. I think she is the only musician in my opinion, who tried as many genre as she could successfully, but maintained her Carnatic musical identity.
