M1 ABRAMS vs OBJECT 775 Pancake Tank | Depleted Uranium APFSDS | Armour Penetration Simulation

The Soviet Object 775 had an exceptionally low profile as it only had a crew of 2 and featured an autoloader. It also had some of the strongest armour of its time, to the extent that the upper glacis would only be vulnerable to APFSDS projectiles which entered service ~15 years after the Object 775 was being developed.
While it could be considered unfair to show it up against an Abrams, which entered service more than 10 years after the Object 775 was developed, it was chosen to show just how strong the armour was. (For comparison, the most powerful NATO kinetic round of the 1960's - late 70's was the Chieftain's L15 APDS projectile, which wouldnt even be able to perforate the top 90mm plate).
The Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) has been modelled as 300BHN hardness, similar to the T-64A and T-72 Ural. The M774 projectile core is Depleted Uranium, being ~26.5 x 345mm. A test model was made first, where the projectile's penetration matched the Lanz-Odermatt predictions: / @sysimulations
At 75°, the projectile can perforate ~114mm of 300BHN RHA (440mm LoS), meaning that it would have no chance against the 120mm of RHA and 70mm of textolite.

Yes, it is a bit unfair showing the Object 775 face a tank 10+ years more modern, but the most powerful APDS projectiles of its era wouldn't have even made it through the 90mm plate.

What contributes to the increased effectiveness of these rounds over the years? do the materials change? depleted uranium is still used. The shape of the projectile doesnt really seem to change either. Muzzle velocity?
@exoterminator-01
@exoterminator-01 10 месяцев назад
@@rykehuss3435 Velocity is one of the big reasons, alongside longer projectiles. Shape was expiramented with and had some good or bad effects. Tungsten and depleted uranium have been a long standing choice of material because of their properties when penetrating armor, especially the shearing of material at the nose of the projectiles to reduce mushrooming.

@battleoid2411
@battleoid2411 10 месяцев назад
@@rykehuss3435 Newer rounds have much longer penetrators, and they have different shapes compared to the older one shown in the simulation that help prevent them from shattering. And yeah higher velocity also helps, one of the main things being looked at for the next generation of tank cannons is having much higher pressures, so for instance rheinmetal's 130mm isnt that much bigger than the 120, but it can fire a much more powerful cartridge which is much more important with KE rounds
@SYsimulations
@SYsimulations 10 месяцев назад
@@rykehuss3435 As most have said, its mostly due to increased aspect ratios of the projectiles and increased velocities due to longer gun barrels, higher chamber pressures, improved propellants, and lighter sabots.

there is a quite easy formula to get it [ X : sin( Y° ) = Z ], for example, at 30 degree (cause 90° would be face on) the thickness doubles and goes exponentially higher. but there is also the effect of the impacting angle itself wich will differ cause it has to do with the round itself on how its volume is and how the tip its formed.for example a pipe would directly eat INTO the angle where a needle will first try to bounced away.

It's called slope armour for a reason and the concept has been used since WW2 for example a 45mm thick armour plate at 60° becomes 90mm while not changing as much weight to a tank
@KekusMagnus
@KekusMagnus 10 месяцев назад
@@steelnail1917 Actually the amount of metal inside a 60° sloped 45mm plate is the same as a 90mm plate of equivalent height. Sloped armor is extra effective because it makes shells shatter and/or bounce instead of absorbing them, which can make the sloped 45mm plate MORE effective than a 90mm plate. There are limits to this however, The advantages of sloped armor can be negated by either a very large caliber shell or by a very long APFSDS dart.
@ShuRugal
@ShuRugal 10 месяцев назад
@@KekusMagnus The secret is you need to put Flex Seal on the outside of the armor. That way, when a projectile encounters it, the glue grabs it and gives it enough traction to begin to roll like a wheel. Then the round will go spinning off over the top instead of penetrating.

Depleted uranium (well, just uranium overall, depleted, natural or enriched) has three properties that make it extremely effective: It has a very high density, it self-ignites upon impact (pyrophoric) and it self-sharpens upon impact (adiabatic shearing). Does the simulation model for the depleted uranium take into account the latter two? It's difficult to see, but the penetrator appears to mushroom, which is something DU is supposed to _not_ do due to the adiabatic shearing effect. (Oh, and there is a fourth property for DU that is also very important/convenient for its use: it is a by-product of uranium enrichment, so it is abundantly available and costs money to store, since it's low radioactive waste.)

Considering that the Russians could theoretically produce quite a lot of these rounds since they have invested significantly in the nuclear energy industry and can export nuclear energy to other countries,However they have not done so, as these rounds will still produce radiation even after it's use and last for years, polluting the environment and giving it's proximate population with severe illnesses as a result of chronic(long term exposure) to the contaminated environment, one example was the ammo depot explosion in Ukraine which had such shells which after it's self detonation produced a field 20 to 30 km radius of radioactivity, it occurred in the more secured regions of Ukraine, However if such artillery shells if we're to be used it would contaminate the soil,making the useless for cultivation, to avoid such situations they would rather spend extra on tungsten core rounds, since the cost of reputation might not have a label

This is nearly 800mm LOS thickness, even TOW-2 would be a gamble. If we are talking EFP top attack variants then no tank can take it and yet not a lot of them in service probably because it's unreliable and much weaker against soft targets.

I don't know if this is right. If it is, why didn't the Soviets/Russians make this tank, or at least make it tanks with this armor profile? We keep seeing these sims of Russian tanks tanking hits but in reality I see nothing but popped off turrets in every war they are in. I doubt every single one was hit in the side or top. Anyone have video of a Russian tank taking frontal a hit from a Western MBT and keep fighting? I have not seen it. I mean I get on PAPER due to the angle and materials this should happen, but reality seems to say otherwise.
